To serve dc smoked salmon slices that are 2 days past use by date

It's been unopened in the fridge but the use by date is 13.11. They are looking forward to it. I am a vegetarian so nit confident thst I'd be able to tell if it's off. It looks the way it always does. Dc are 3 and 6.

Would it help to cook it?

Well, life expectancy has improved no end with the introduction of hygiene and food safety rules...🙄

Hygiene yes, but food ‘safety’ nanny state rules about use by dates replacing common sense, no.

42isthemeaning · 24/11/2024 16:07

Personally I wouldn’t risk it with children, but I’m also laughing at the advert which appeared on this thread.

I would, you can cook and stir into pasta with cream cheese or sour cream

FindingMeno · 24/11/2024 15:52

If it was an accident and you'd already given it to them I'd say not to panic.
But to do it deliberately- just no.

Why dont you eat it??

Why don’t you read it!

Yawn 🥱 how on earth has humankind survived for thousands of years eating all kinds of things without nanny state BB and Use By dates, and without the blessed wisdom of ‘food microbiologists’? 🙄

I've def usedpacks 2 days past best and were all totally fine - I wouldn't go over that though

BearOnABlanket · 24/11/2024 15:40

We just did last week (well, I think it was smoked trout actually) - it's smoked that's the whole point of smoking, to preserve it, plus it's vac-sealed and in the fridge.

I apply the sniff/feel test to most things and we've been OK so far (and I'm better than my parents/ex-inlaws who'd happily leave leftovers covered, out on the side in the kitchen at Christmas and eat it for 3/4 days after - also with no ill effects in however many years they've been doing it.

Malteaserd · 24/11/2024 15:35

Chuck it to be safe

Sheepsandcows · 24/11/2024 15:32

what happened to the good old look at it and take a sniff approach. if nothing funky is there, it will be fine esp as it's smoked. How did people live when there were no dates stamped of food!

As a food microbiologist, I would not serve this to children. Salmon can contain Listeria which can multiply exponentially which is why the use by date is present as this indicates when the level of listeria is no longer safe.

Moonlightstars · 16/11/2024 00:15

It will be absolutely fine.

Smoked isn’t raw. It’s cooked.

Nope it's raw. Although obviously safer due to smoking and salting.

mrsDracoMalfoy · 15/11/2024 23:06

Love that your 3 and 5 year olds are looking forward to smoked salmon. My 8 year old would think I hated him if I tried to serve him that, in date or other wise 😂

Pinkissmart · 15/11/2024 21:18

I’d use it if it didn’t smell off. I would crispy fry it though

LastNight1Dreamt1WentToManderleyAgain · 15/11/2024 21:13

I'd cook it on high heat and add to scrambled eggs or a risotto as a supper dish

whatisforteamum · 15/11/2024 20:57

As a food microbiologist said upthread they wouldn't.
Before all this health and safety stuff lots of people became v ill or worse.
I'm glad of the use by dates on high risk food.
Some of you have cast iron stomachs though.😵‍💫

Yes, it's use by date

It’s smoked. It’s fine. With smoked fish you can tell by the smell and colour if it’s gone off.

RaspberryCombat · 15/11/2024 19:44

Well we have a pretty lox approach to smoked salmon

… that’s how it is round schmear anyway.

👌

Goldbar · 15/11/2024 19:57

I would. Smoked salmon lasts for ages. I can't see that 2 days longer is going to make a big difference. With fresh salmon or chicken, however, I prefer to cook it same day or the next day after I buy it.

RaspberryCombat · 15/11/2024 19:44

minipie · 15/11/2024 18:25

I would. I have a pretty lax approach to use by dates and go off smell and look. Smoked salmon will be fine.

It's raw fish technically so not a good idea

Smoked isn’t raw. It’s cooked.

BarbaraHoward · 15/11/2024 19:43

Probably fine if it smells fine but I definitely wouldn't risk it.

I had horrendous food poisoning once, lasted six weeks and I lost a stone and a half. Cautious about meat and fish etc ever since!

Katemax82 · 15/11/2024 19:41

SpunkyCritic · 15/11/2024 19:36

Absolutely I'd eat it and feed it to my kids.

Cannot understand people who are so fastidious about dates and absolutely insist on not eating anything out of date. As if at 11.31pm it's fine and safe, but half an hour later it will give you food poisoning! Common sense is required.
