It seems to be that every bugger that gets caught with this kind of material or is accused of rape or sexual assault claims they've been abused themselves, and that seems to help them get away without jail time. No idea whether it's true or not, but plenty of people who suffer abuse in childhood don't then go on to become abusers so it shouldn't really be regarded as a mitigating factor.

I completely agree. A relatives neighbour got caught doing the same a couple of years ago and I won't say his profession as it could be outing but it's a respected profession. He also got no jail time. I was gobsmacked. Just a slap on the wrists. I would love to know why this does not require a jail sentence!

No idea. Someone I went to school with was sent to prison for similar crimes (photos/videos) so I assume the sentencing guidelines allow a reasonable amount of discretion.

I saw a lot of comments on here and elsewhere that Huw Edwards must have got special treatment because he wasn't sentenced but I think he got fairly standard treatment. I don't know if the man I went to school with had something particularly egregious in his case that actually got a prison sentence, but it's hard to think what's worse than the story you've shared.
