I really wish I was a more evolved person but honestly my instant gut reaction is that these perverts should be branded on the forehead and released out into the world. Let's see how well they do when every single person who sees them knows that what they've done.

Have any of you watched the three part BBC documentary about the Snapchat catfisher?

It’s the worst case you can imagine and he was an absolute psychopath. He was found with 230,000 images, which had been newly created through his abuse. Using Snapchat and Instagram he contacted, duped, terrified and abused 350 children all over the world and been in touch with 3500.

One poor girl actually killed herself while being abused by him online, and then the girl’s father killed himself in grief a few months later.

He got 20 years in prison but it should have been a whole life term!

It does sound like he was a lone wolf and did not share the images he took, so they are not in circulation forever. Perhaps that affected the sentencing.

There was another recent case of a young man who made 3D computer graphics images of grotesque abuse and sold it to other men, who gave him requests including photos of family members to make deepfakes.

That man got 30 years which of course he deserves, but the catfisher just seems worse. The catfisher should be extradited to the US where many of his victims lived.

People just twist it back onto the victim too. People really struggle with the notion that it’s an abuse of position and want to examine the circumstances to find a way the victim is at fault.

When my DM found out I had been groomed. She screamed and shouted asking did “i have sex with him” not if I’d been raped. I said no, because I was scared. When I later came forward, the police were utterly despondent. Presumably because it’s so hard to secure a conviction it’s just another case they have to go through the motions with taking time and energy when the prospects it even making the threshold for the CPS are so low. Mine only succeeded as he’d had previous for the same sort of offences. My Mum, now humiliated and again screaming re did I have sex with him told me strictly not to tell anyone as they’d assume it was a family member and wouldn’t that be shameful for us all.

Many years later my MIL was talking about a teacher she worked with who’d been prosecuted for CSA against pupils and said it “took two tango” DH got upset and told them I had been a victim and to watch what she was saying. Oh she said, why did her parents allow it. Those were teachers!

The court process is a punishment in itself!

The internet is a great resource but it's also the means by which too many perverts get their jollies. Previously a man with sexual urges outside the norm had very few ways of meeting anyone with the same tastes, now there's whole groups on the net dedicated to men's sick fantasies. One man on his own might never indulge, now he has a group telling him they like it too it doesn't feel so bad- right up until the police come knocking.

I wonder if it was decided not to mandate jail sentences for such criminals because, in the age of the internet, there are just so many of these dirty fuckers that our prison system would soon become overwhelmed?

I believe the prison system was nearly overwhelmed post-Saville. So many people came forward to accuse grandfathers, uncles, football coaches, etc, of historic abuse that the police could barely cope. And those are just the ones who were convicted. For every man who goes to prison for abusing a child there must be dozens who get away with it. I have often looked at old men and thought “I wonder if you’ll take some evil act to the grave with you. Did you abuse your granddaughter? Did you work in a care home in the ‘70s and abuse the children?”

I would bet there is at least one rapist or child abuser in every old people’s home in Britain. I have heard and read so many horror stories over the years that it’s made me hyper-vigilant and hyper-cynical. I can think of at least five women who have told me about rape or sexual abuse in their childhood. None of them ever went to the police. In the quiet suburban street where I live, there is a woman whose dad went to prison for abusing her sister, and a neighbour whose elderly ex-husband made sexual advances on a 14-year-old. That’s just one random street in rural Essex. It’s a dark subject, but I suspect the sexual abuse of young people has always been very common. It was a sort of dark, unspoken secret. Even writers like Dickens and Hardy don’t dare go there. They occasionally hint at it, but no more. Imagine what went on in Victorian orphanages and workhouses. They must have been paradise for paedophiles. And you can imagine the response if someone complained (“you wicked child…how dare you say such filthy things about your elders and betters” etc.) Thank god things are changing.

I know this, I”d like a full scale inquiry into sexual abuse in children’s homes as far back as living memory goes. From what I can make out, it seems to have been absolutely rife until well into the 1980s. Why has it never blown up into a scandal? Some of the staff must still be alive.

I once heard a police officer say that the real punishment isn’t the prison sentence, it’s the fallout. Usually, their partner leaves them, their neighbours and friends shun them, their family cuts them off, they’re kicked out of their home, they lose their kids, and in some cases they lose their job. If you are caught viewing such images, you never live it down. The shame stays with you all your life.

A guy near me was caught arranging to meet an underage girl. Vigilantes turned up instead and filmed him. That was ten years ago, but you only have to type his name into Google and that video pops up. He didn’t go to prison either, but I’m sure he’d rather have gone to prison than have the shame hanging over him for the rest of his life.

You can only hope!

Didn't quite work out like that for that Dutch volleyball player though, did it?

I saw that article and was shocked at no jail time .

The criminal justice consequences for sexual crimes against children are criminally unjust.

Yet another example of the male sexual entitlement and privilege which disregards victims and ruins lives.

Whatifitallgoesright · 15/11/2024 14:45

Best ask Starmer.

If this isn't jailable... (TW child abuse)

KoalaCalledKevin · 15/11/2024 13:40

No idea. Someone I went to school with was sent to prison for similar crimes (photos/videos) so I assume the sentencing guidelines allow a reasonable amount of discretion.

I saw a lot of comments on here and elsewhere that Huw Edwards must have got special treatment because he wasn't sentenced but I think he got fairly standard treatment. I don't know if the man I went to school with had something particularly egregious in his case that actually got a prison sentence, but it's hard to think what's worse than the story you've shared.

Huw Edwards didn't share the images though, I don't think.

But this guy has and still hasn't been jailed. I haven't read the article as I don't click on Daily Mail shit but the summary in the preview is horrific.

He's only on the sex offenders register for ten years??

Yes, the nauseating skidmark should have been on it for life, as well as in prison. I am really boggling that he could have such terrible videos and get away without going to jail.

What on earth is wrong with our society??

What about the abused babies? Their lives have no value at all?

I honestly do not think there is rehabilitation for these offenses. There should be zero leniency in the court. If anything I think it should be life no parole on the low end death penalty on the high end.

Superworm24 · 15/11/2024 14:31

Cooperation and a sob story about MH struggles seems to get you off for a lot of things. I can only hope that the information he has provided will lead to more arrests.

Absolutely shocking regarding the number of images and the age of the victims.

potatocakesinprogress · 15/11/2024 14:29

NImumconfused · 15/11/2024 13:56

It seems to be that every bugger that gets caught with this kind of material or is accused of rape or sexual assault claims they've been abused themselves, and that seems to help them get away without jail time. No idea whether it's true or not, but plenty of people who suffer abuse in childhood don't then go on to become abusers so it shouldn't really be regarded as a mitigating factor.

I've never understood this, I've always thought that it should be the crime and the outcome for the victim/s that's being judged, not anything else. If someone's raped or dead they're raped or dead, that's what it should be based on. Not inventing an X Factor grade sob story.

leia24 · 15/11/2024 14:29

Unfortunately IIOC on a first offence (regardless of the number of images/charges covering the same time period) is unlikely to result in a custodial sentence.

Dreambow · 15/11/2024 14:23

Absolutely disgusting. He is a sick, vile paedo. How can anyone watch anything so disgusting. Those poor babies.
He is a danger to others and always will be. Frightening he chose to train as a teacher. Should be locked up for life/ death sentence and on the register for life.

The justice system is a joke. Most crime not investigated. Criminals have so many rights/ claim all sorts of mental health issues/ make up so much and get away with it and victims never see justice.

In a similar situation here and sentencing isn't for another 2 months and I know for a fact the defendant will be giving one hell of a sob story in the reports that are being prepared (no ASD and no abuse as a child though) but has previously avoided prison twice in the last 20 years for other serious offences ( 1 sexual and 1 not) but this latest one is the worst one yet but I'm having to mentally prepare myself for him not being punished properly yet again, it's a fucking joke

SunQueen24 · 15/11/2024 14:02

Can a baby of that age even survive penetrative rape? Assuming that’s what it is.

The mind boggles as to how people who are happy to view, distribute and ultimately contribute to the demand and therefore production of those images of abuse can be allowed to walk amongst us.

Serencwtch · 15/11/2024 14:00

It will be because the offence is sharing the videos. He wasn't the one who created them, put them on the internet or did the offences that were filmed.

Agree that the laws & sentencing guidelines need to be updated in light of this. It should be a much more serious offence due to the content - okay he didn't commit the acts himself but viewing & sharing it definitely contributes to it & definitely shows he is a disturbed individual & not safe in society.
