If you want a loan repaying then you can’t decide you’ll only accept cash ?

I was loaned £1000 by a family member. The agreement was to pay it back £250 a month for 4 months. It was transferred to me.

I made the first repayment text to say I’d done it then get a message back that they’ve sent it back and I’m to deliver cash each month to them . They live THREE hours away. This was not agreed and I don’t understand but each time I say no I’m only doing bank transfer they won’t accept it. So now I don’t know what to do and I cant do a 6 hour round trip every month for 4 months !!!

Sounds very odd. Have you called to ask why she returned it?

"If you want a loan repaying then you can't decide to only accept cash" is your title.

Of COURSE she can! She didn't have to loan you anything. The point is, it was a loan, you pay it back.

Well, yes she can, but it's unreasonable to stipulate this after the fact, especially given the distance involved.

Rottweilermummy · 17/11/2024 05:53

They'll have to wait until you have the full amount , visit you, or can you maybe meet them halfway if they're tha desperate, sending the money in the post I think is dodgy even if special delivery these days, still doesn't mean to say that they will receive ,

It must be benefits I can’t think of anything else but she hasn’t ever said she’s on UC but then we haven’t talked about it just other things . It’s just very strange and her dp knows I borrowed the money so it’s not as if she’s hiding it from anyone

It can't be benefits. This will not effect her award period. Not one bit.

huuskymam · 16/11/2024 22:36

I'd expect it back the way I sent it. Travelling 3 hours to pay back money when it could be done electronically is madness.

Deeperthantheocean · 16/11/2024 22:09

Strange but you can still use cheques, just need to request from bank. Xx

They won’t explain why and for years we’ve done transfers for things like the dc birthday and Xmas gifts so I just assumed it would be the same but it seems to be a major problem . I’ve messaged to say In 4 months ill be up with the full amount so waiting for a response

Edited

well you have the upper hand here. So tell them it is a transfer or a cheque by post or they will have to come and collect the cash from you if they want it in person.

And then stand firm.

Treesandsheepeverywhere · 16/11/2024 22:03

Has she replied OP?

RavenhairedRachel · 16/11/2024 21:19

Could you save the whole amount and deliver it when you've got it ? It would mean only one trip

Gbtch · 16/11/2024 20:15

Tel12 · 15/11/2024 12:19

Send it special delivery

That’s your answer

MrsClatterbuck · 16/11/2024 19:26

I would be tempted to repay in £1 coins.

premierleague · 16/11/2024 19:16

Tell her you can't get to her but she's welcome to come to you, or you will transfer. Put the instalments in a savings account- you can get 4% on easy access - and don't touch it. Sorted if she turns up, and if not you still have the money!

Havinganamechange · 16/11/2024 18:04

If you don’t transfer it via a traceable method like the bank, she could say you have never paid it back, sounds like she is trying to pull a fast one.

Isobel201 · 15/11/2024 17:21

Shouldbeeasy · 15/11/2024 15:30

No because she sent it back ?

she could have transferred it quickly to another account?

Onthesideofthespiders · 15/11/2024 17:17

Are there any family members close by your sisters? Can you send them the money and have them drop it off to her?

ByMerryKoala · 15/11/2024 17:11

PurebredRacingUnicorn · 15/11/2024 17:08

Tell her she can accept a bank transfer or she can take you to court for the money. She will look pretty silly if she does the latter, assuming that you have documentary evidence of your attempts to make the repayment.

This is your advice? Threaten to take the ds who gave you money to court BEFORE you find out what the issue is?

No wonder every fucker in this place is no contact with their family!

goingdownfighting · 15/11/2024 17:04

Have you asked her why she wants it in cash?

Can you buy her something she needs instead and get it delivered? Or top up an account eg school dinners or Amazon?

Spondoolies · 15/11/2024 16:53

See if she will accept Amazon or a supermarket voucher

yukikata · 15/11/2024 16:49

Transfer over the money. If she transfers it back, that's up to her. She will have no case whatsoever if she tries to take you to court over it, because she didn't accept the money.

(Also send a message as above explaining that you can't travel to pay cash, and keep a record of it).

She has no leg to stand on here.

FreeRider · 15/11/2024 16:45

If your sister is claiming benefits, she may be concerned that due to a new law being passed that the DWP could ask to see 4 months worth of her bank statements at any time going forward. They may see your regular payments into her bank account as being 'income', which could affect her claim.

My best friend is DWP Work Coach, he has been advising me NOT to have any payments from family etc made into my bank account for this very reason.

FranticHare · 15/11/2024 12:19

“I’m sorry, I cannot travel up to you every month. To remind you that would be a 6 hour round trip without stopping, as well as costing me a lot of money in travelling expenses. I’ll visit once in 4 months time with the full amount.”

That's what I would do. Did they give it in cash? I'm assuming not as you said transferred.

Or say you could do it monthly but need to charge going rate per mile.

TheignT · 15/11/2024 15:58

mummytrex · 15/11/2024 12:32

Given how difficult they're being I'd insist on bank transfer. What happens if they deny having been given the cash further down the line?

Yes that's what I was thinking, particularly if the loan was given by bank transfer so they have evidence of giving the money and OP has no evidence of paying it back.

LivinInYourBigGlassHouseWithAView · 15/11/2024 15:48

THey accept bank transfers are they meet you somewhere local to you to collect it. End of.

Have the money sitting in an account for them. Do not be bullied into 'visiting' them in this manner.
