To complain about postie forging my signature for important document delivery?

I was not home when I received a text informing me that my large letter had been delivered and signed for.

The photograph showed my front door and a signature ( not mine)

i arrived home about an hour later and the letter was in my mailbox on the wall next to the door ( we don’t have letterbox)

There were original birth certificates which were being returned - the sender had paid £8.35 in order that they be safely delivered to my own hands.

Obviously I was happy to not have to go and collect the letter from the sorting office - but not too pleased knowing that my valuable docs weren’t taken care of

I say we crucify the postie. Anything else is too good for him or her.

Ffs, he hasn't forged a signature. He has signed FOR the document. If someone other than the OP was honest they'd do the same! And that's not forging..

Some ridiculous law abiding pearl clutchers on here.

The signature is supposed to be that of the recipient, signing to say they have received it.

A signature by the postman who delivers it into a letterbox is signing for what, exactly?

What have you got to complain about? You got your delivery. I'm a postie and we can't win. If we leave something and the person isn't in we get moaned at. If we take the parcel/letter back to the office we get moaned at too.

Christ! How can you be in the job and not understand what the point of a signed for delivery is?

I would be very unhappy with anybody forging my signature, yes.

@KnigCnut sorry my screen graphics didn't post will try again

He has not interfered with it, it was delivered intact and on time. He has signed for the delivery. That is all. No crime.

Interfering with the mail it's a crime, the letter was to be delivered to the property and signed for by some in the property doing anything else is Interfering with the mail, it doesn't matter whether the postie stole the letter, binned it or just didn't deliver it as contractually bound, because its the royal mail it's a crime

That means opening the mail or stealing it 🙄
Not signing for it and delivering it.
logic not your strong point?

I'm no solicitor - but is not interfering with the mail opening it or delaying it.
The postie in this case, if anything, speeded up the process.

What if your in a DV relationship or with nosey room-mates and have asked for something to be signed for so you know it doesn't go astray? This has happend to me before and it pissed me off, if I didn't want the protection of signed for I would have asked for another service. The postman has no right to decide to circumvent the security of the process.

If nosy roommate gets to the door before OP, they can sign for it. If hypothetical abusive husband is home, he can sign for it. A signature is required, not a particular signature.

In this case the postie signed for it and put it into the OP's, presumably locked and secure, mailbox. Successfully, safely delivered with the added bonus of saving the OP a trip to the sorting office.

Wrongsideofpennines · 14/11/2024 20:58

Our passports, birth certificates and marriage certificate were all just dumped in our porch. I would have been happy to go to the sorting office to be honest because our porch is open and could have been taken by anyone. And obviously all of the whole family's documents were in separate envelopes but in one unsecured place.

What crime has been committed? What law has been broken?

He's put his neck on the line to do you a favour - if it went missing, you'd be able to say that you never signed for it and he would get into a lot of trouble. And yet he did it anyway to do you a favour. Sounds like a win win situation for you, with the postie the one taking a risk and putting his neck on the line.

Startinganew32 · 14/11/2024 20:54

I mean I am happy to be corrected but I don’t think he did forge her signature. I think he signed FOR her which is permitted and happens all the time. I’ve been asked to sign for my neighbours post all the time and I don’t even know her well.

eightIsNewNine · 14/11/2024 20:52

I'm not in the UK, but I don't understand why anyone would consider forging the signature on registered mail "doing you a favour".

Don't you have any situations when some deadline/complaint/reaction period starts counting from the delivery date?

Startinganew32 · 14/11/2024 20:52

Hoardasurass · 14/11/2024 20:46

The postie was breaking the law.
What part of that do you not understand, it's classed as interfering with the mail which if you were a postie you'd know and you'd also know that it can land you in jail and that's before we deal with the forgery of a legal document

What is the legal document? That machine you have to squiggle your signature onto when you receive the post.

KnigCnut · 14/11/2024 20:52

Hoardasurass · 14/11/2024 20:49

No she just has to provide a copy of her signature and then it's a police matter

What crime has been committed? What law has been broken?

AyrshireTryer · 14/11/2024 20:51

@Hoardasurass Perhaps OP can order some wood and the postie can be nailed to a cross.

Hoardasurass · 14/11/2024 20:49

KnigCnut · 14/11/2024 20:28

Whose name did the postie sign? Did he actually forge yours/sign your name? Or just sign it to say he had delivered?
You have a delivery and a signature which seems to meet the strictest definition of a signed for delivery. It may not be the original intent of this service, but as you have the delivery, you would have a hard time proving a problem.

Hoardasurass · 14/11/2024 20:46

Zingy123 · 14/11/2024 20:20

@EmmaMaria The OP clearly wasn't in when the letter was delivered. I'm sure she would have been overjoyed to travel to her local delivery office which is probably open for 2 hours a day. The postie was doing her a favour.

OP isn't suggesting it's ok for posties to be assaulted. She's questioning why the signed for process is not being followed. Maybe she doesn't mind going to the sorting office.

says in 1st post that she happy she didn't have to go

Wexone · 14/11/2024 20:43

Zingy123 · 14/11/2024 20:39

@Wexone thank you. Posties are regularly assaulted just for doing their jobs. One poor guy had his jaw broken. If people were in when they order these things it would make our life so much easier.

that is absolutely shocking. such a vital service provided and this is how the public treat it. mine lovely he knows I work from home and if I have a parcel doesn't even knock just leaves in porch and I get a text. saves the dogs going mental
op your lucky you not in America. a friend of mine lives in texas housing estate so big all post is delivered to a large set of delivery boxes she has to walk 10 mins to get to it. uses it as walk the dog time or one of kids go up to it.

Of course YABU. How can you possibly think you're in the right here?!

Would you be happy with someone forging your signature on any other legal documents?
