Heard the one about Racist Dogs in Wales

Been trying to copy links from the Telegraph and various other news outlets but failing miserably with my phone so any help much appreciated.

Anyway, it seems the Welsh Labour government are trying to create dog free zones to make Wales less racist or something along those lines.
The more I read it, the less sense it makes. Not that it made any sense to begin with.
Any Welsh mumsnetters with racist dogs?
Could you send your dog on a course to be less racist like we have to in our places of work.

FFS - stop falling for race baiting DM headlines 🙄

The article is about a couple of reports that has been produced by two different Welsh BAME group about the barriers that ethnic minorities face in accessing the outdoors - in the main it talks about how there is poor public transport from town's and cities to non-urban areas, how green spaces in urban areas are not respected (dog fouling / rubbish etc) and that this is more pronounced in areas where there are more minorities. One of the suggested solutions to this is having some dog free spaces within urban green areas - I guess like most parks where there is children's play equipment.

The reports included feedback from people from different ethnic backgrounds who felt uncomfortable in rural areas due to a lack of understanding of their culture and religion as well.

The DM and Welsh Tories have hooked onto one quote from one black woman who said that dogs made her uncomfortable which was on of her personal barriers to accessing green spaces and used it to try and make the Welsh government sound like they are saying dogs are racist🙄

Yup. It's just race baiting froth. I must admit I saw the title of this thread and was thinking of a King Of The Hill episode from many yonks ago.

Dog-free zones sound like a great idea.

Especially for those people of any race/religion/nationality/hight/weight/hair colour/taste in music, etc. who dislike being around dogs. For whatever reason.

Yes it's a good idea but the racist angle is wild!

Although my mum's adopted cat is sexist, it doesn't like men.

BobbyBiscuits · 15/11/2024 21:08

@another1bitestheduck quite. It's just crappy/'imaginative' journalism over some boring council ruling over dog walking. There's nothing to do with race involved at all. And to assume people of different races don't like dogs in itself could be discriminatory? It seems like they're trying to stir racist hatred over dogs? Jayzus wept. 🙃

BobbyBiscuits · 15/11/2024 10:58

The only reason they're equating it with race is BC the one person that negatively mentioned dogs was black?
This feels like they're twisting a story out of nothing really. Dog free zones in some parks are a reasonable idea. In other countries dogs are often walked in specific areas of the park. Nobody at any point actually said that people of other races apart from white dislike dogs en masse?

exactly, and she didn't make any link between feeling uncomfortable about dogs and her race. It could have just as easily been a white man who made the exact same comment, how would they have spun it then?

kirbykirby · 15/11/2024 16:16

I thought this was a parody!

KnittedCardi · 15/11/2024 15:38

Not quite what the thread is about, but:

In the main it talks about how there is poor public transport from town's and cities to non-urban areas

Well yes. Rural areas have their public transport cut, so they can't access towns.......But no-one really cared about that.

baldhair · 15/11/2024 15:10

perhaps we should walk pigs in those areas

KimberleyClark · 15/11/2024 12:19

VimesandhisCardboardBoots · 15/11/2024 11:10

To be fair to the Welsh government, it's not their idea, and they've said they're not doing it. They just commissioned a report that had a bloody stupid idea in it.

Everyone seems to be missing this in their keenness to have a go at the Welsh government.

JusteanBiscuits · 15/11/2024 11:58

They said Inclusive. Inclusive /= Racism.

TroysMammy · 15/11/2024 11:56

I've read it that people of ethnic minorities want to walk around the Welsh countryside but don't want to encounter dogs so the Welsh government want everyone to be able to go where they please. Considering nearly everywhere welcomes dogs in for example cafes and shops I don't think they can ban them from certain places outdoors. It's been twisted so that it has racist connotations but knowing the Welsh government they could dream anything up which affects everyone.

Not surprised judging by the amount of dog attacks randomly

I'm not sure how me walking my dog in the countryside has anything to do with someone's religion or culture.

There's a park near me where I take my dogs to which has a field which is a dog free area which I think is a great idea, families can picnic there and play ball games without the worry of dogs. Nothing to do with culture or religion.

This is bonkers. I did have a rescue once who didn’t like white blokes. I assume mistreated previously but was fine with others. I suppose now I’d have to suggest he “reframe his trauma”

I had a rescue jackahuahua who didn't like men with grey hair and glasses.
Didn't matter what colour they were - just grey hair and glasses on anyone.

SweetSixty · 15/11/2024 10:46

I've noticed that a lot of anti-woke, stop the boats, racist type people have photos of their dog (often a very measured looking bichon frise) against a George cross background as their profile picture on Facebook.

Could it be to do with that?

Or could it be culture war stoking by the Telegraph et al?

Pussycat22 · 15/11/2024 10:35

batmansknickers, yep you heard alr

aright!! Oh the professionally offended have found something else to be offended about!

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 15/11/2024 10:30

@Sia8899 , from experience, some dogs will bark at anything unfamiliar, because it frightens them. Our old dog, who wouldn’t hurt a fly, and once hid behind the sofa when a friend of a dd brought his pet rabbit round! - once barked at a policeman in a helmet - first time she’d seen one. Ditto at a large Halloween pumpkin that I’d put outside on the garden table - such a scary orange face!

@Nellieinthebarn

Well said.
It is virtue signalling.
I am sure the Welsh government is run by adults so why they can't use common sense and honesty is beyond me.

You’ve not sent a lot of time in wales have you?

LastNight1Dreamt1WentToManderleyAgain · 14/11/2024 18:43

Depending on where you or your family are from, dogs may have been used to attack (including rape) and/or kill. A Sudanese friend alerted me to this a few years ago. There are other examples of places where this happens, and British people may have family in or be refugees from these places

Black British people statistically fare worse with the police and may associate dogs with guarding and intimidation also because of transgenerational trauma in former colonies where guard dogs are used even today. A South Asian friend of mine in an English city was threatened with having a dog set on her when she rang unexpectedly at a white neighbour's because she was locked out.

Raquelos · 14/11/2024 18:14

If you make it to the end of the article (and I completely understand if you didn't) it wraps up with this:

A Welsh Government spokesman said: 'These comments are feedback from people who were asked their views and NOT proposals.
'There are NO plans to ban dogs from the countryside and any suggestion otherwise is inaccurate and a complete misrepresentation of the report.'

So all total BS, which is always such a surprise from the DM

HarrietPierce · 14/11/2024 17:40

"Read the fucking article- it has nothing to do with Muslims having an issue with dogs or how well you do respecting other cultures."

This. I knew it would turn into some Islamaphobic diatribe. My Muslim husband and his wider family love dogs.

Horrace · 14/11/2024 17:37

another1bitestheduck · 14/11/2024 17:32

exactly, and people like OP fall for it and propagate it.
The version of the article I read specifically ends with:

"A Welsh Government spokesman said: 'These comments are feedback from people who were asked their views and NOT proposals.
'There are NO plans to ban dogs from the countryside and any suggestion otherwise is inaccurate and a complete misrepresentation of the report.'

Although tbh I'd be quite in favour of a 'no dogs' area or 'no dogs' set time, or at the bare minimum a 'no dogs off lead' policy - several times some untrained hound has bounded up to me and put their muddy paws over my coat while their idiot owner shouts "don't worry he won't hurt you!" Don't care, still don't want them jumping at me, and if I was afraid of dogs, the "reassuring" by someone so ineffectual their own dog ignores their attempt at recalling them is hardly trustworthy.

The original article has been updated since I started this thread with new statements from the government spokesperson you have quoted.
None of that was in the original articles.
