To want to know why dog owners won't yank their dogs out of humans' way

OptimismvsRealism · 14/11/2024 08:38

Just expect humans walking along the pavement to wait while they please themselves/ trip you up

Aren't they worried the dog will get kicked even if they selfishly don't care about other people at all??

Because I hope my dog will sniff out the dog haters and give them a sharp nip on the ankle as we pass.

This is exactly why people do hate dogs and/or their vile owners. Your dog deserves to get kicked if it goes biting passers-by. If a dog nipped my child’s ankle as she sat in her wheelchair you’d deserve to get kicked too you sound despicable.

Why would you be PROUD of that? I would obviously kick it if it did so who would win? Why wouldn't you just have some basic thoughtfulness?

Well kicking a dog is illegal.

If you go around doing it then enjoy court, your ankle tag and an animal cruelty mark that will likely effect your ability to get employment in many places, thats not mentioning the huge public backlash if many find out regardless of the legal process.

Cardboardeaux · 14/11/2024 09:33

I'm not a dog lover especially but yabvu. I don't expect dog owners to "yank" their dog out of the way, nor should dog owners fear that all non-dog owners might kick their dog Hmm

(In response to the inevitable "oh another dog hating thread" comments, lots of us who are "meh" about dogs at best won't express those views in public, so I can understand the wish to vent anonymously online. But I suspect the OP is not posting in good faith here...)

kiraric · 14/11/2024 09:36

It especially annoys me on train platforms. There isn't a lot of space, if you have a dog, you need to keep it closer. It's not ok to block the whole platform so people can't walk down to get to a quieter carriage

The level of hysteria about dogs on here is bizarre and intense. In a 60 year lifetime I've never once encountered it in real life. Where and who are all these ranting people and why are they so very fired up with it?

It’s the opposite way round for me. I have come across people who dislike dogs, or dog mess left by careless owners (my own street is a popular dog walking route and has a lot of unpicked up dog shit, so I can understand the impatience) and I have two close friends with an ingrained phobia of dogs since childhood bites, but I have never come across the ranty ‘DOGS ARE BETTER THAN PEOPLE, HUMANS ARE AWFUL AND SELFISH, ONLY DOGS DESERVE MY TIME!!’ people in RL, despite knowing lots of fond dog owners.

People hate all dogs and dog owners on the basis of one comment?

Totally agree. Most dog owners are annoyed by dog mess and irresponsible dog owners too but it's the level of rantiness and aggressive, violent hatred I can't understand on here.

One comment which I'm pretty sure was sarcasm, as well...

Cf another current thread claiming pet owners are sweet, well-adjusted individuals, and non-pet-owners are ‘cold’, possibly psychotic miserabilists.

I keep my dog by my side, when people walk past us I keep him away from them, even moving into the road to let them continue on their way on the safe pavement, he can go free in areas with other dogs who have normal owners who don’t run screaming because there is a dog playing with theirs. My dog is no danger but I make sure anyone else can go about their business without him bothering them, though most of the time he will get a hello from passers by. So if someone is hateful enough to kick my dog, they are getting kicked back. Mumsnet dog hating threads are insane!

RocketPanda · 14/11/2024 09:43

People who abuse or want to abuse animals score highly on the psychopathy scale. Best keep you away from all living things @OptimismvsRealism .

OneTC · 14/11/2024 09:43

Most people don't yank dogs for the same reason most people don't kick dogs. Because most people aren't tetchy wankers.

ginasevern · 14/11/2024 09:52

There are too many humans in my opinion. Has anyone else noticed how crowded everywhere is all the time. There used to be "quieter periods" in shops or on the roads but it's just become insane, relentless. Why the fuck are people ranting about dogs!

Allfur · 14/11/2024 09:52

Just be more tolerant and patient, and share the space. Would you be as pissed off if it was for example, a big wheely suitcase in your way, or one of the many other things that can block pavements?

Same.

I'm not a dog owner, I don't love (or hate) dogs, but the experiences MN seems to have with dogs are completely alien to me. And I live in a very pro-dog area!

Anyotherdude · 14/11/2024 09:56

Yanking your dog out of the way isn’t the answer. If the dog is walking by the owner’s side there should be enough room to pass.
However, people who walk their dogs on an extended extendable lead are irresponsible if they don’t shorten the lead to allow other people to pass, but it doesn’t give you the right to kick the dog!

So you'd kick a dog would you rather than adjust your direction?

Are you the woman on her phone who barged straight into yesterday as she wasn't looking where she was going? No apology of course.

Flocke · 14/11/2024 09:59

Where I live a large percentage of people have dogs. A large majority are good owners. But there are some really annoying ones who do allow their dogs to get in everyone's way.

One man has 3 small dogs on long leads and all dogs go off in different directions so it's impossible to get round them without crossing the road.

Then you get the ones on long leads who dart left to right while the owner walks directly down the middle. So you can't prepare early how to get round them because as you move left, the dog does, you move the other way, the dog darts over that way. Then you get tutted at by the owner as you end up face to face with them in the middle of the path.

Obviously no it isn't just dogs that get in people's way. You get families walking 4 abreast who don't move. 2/3 people walking together with buggies. But this thread is about dogs so that's why people are talking about them.

Well yes I would if that person was being inconsiderate. If someone with a massive suitcase stopped to chat/text and left their suitcase in the middle of the pavement without moving it to the side then yes I would be pissed off.

I'm sick to death of people talking about being patient and tolerant but no one ever seems to say that others should also be considerate of others. Why should I be patient with others who aren't being considerate and sharing the space as you put it. They're blocking the space.

Be more patient with the group of people blocking the road chatting. Maybe they're sharing bad news.

Be more considerate of the drivers trying to push in a slip road queue and just let them in. Maybe they (all 15+ of them) didn't realise this was their junction.

Be more understanding of those drivers not stopping at a zebra crossing - maybe they have an urgent appointment.

Be more patient with those cyclists on the pavement zooming past children. You do know it's more dangerous for them on the roads so maybe they're scared.

I'm just fed up with hearing this. If all those people had more consideration for others in the first place people wouldn't be getting pissed off.

I was being sarcastic obviously, just sick of all the crazy dog hating threads. Tedious as fuck.

Agreed!! And I'm a former dog owner.

If you kicked my dog, I wouldn’t think twice about booting you back ☺️

AnotherChildFreeCatLady · 14/11/2024 19:37

You would have to be a real piece of shit to kick a dog who was walking on the same path as you. Also, those paths are for everyone, so those people can also move over, it's not just up to the dog owner.

henlake7 · 14/11/2024 19:55

Im sure I must annoy people with my lot! The 12 yr old only wants to walk in front on the far right, meanwhile the 16 yr old only wants to walk at the back on the far left. Oh, and the 15 yr old (who is blind with dementia) is all over the place! It's like trying to herd cats.

And then I'm usually plodding along with my head in my phone as it helps me walk slowly enough for the 16 yr old.
I always clean up after them and make the effort to move them out of the way but they aren't as sprightly as they used to be.

I guess I'm just saying that dogs aren't machines and even with the best of intentions owners can't always get them perfectly aligned on pavements!
