So I’ve (badly) scratched and dented our car, DH will be super pissed. Can I get away with saying another vehicle must have done this by crashing into it whilst parked??? Help!!

I think the reason you feel you have to lie to him is much more important than the car.

Spot on. You shouldn't have to be scared of his response.

ClytemnestraWasMisunderstood · 14/11/2024 07:22

No, it is not. It is an American import and sounds ridiculous over here as pissed is a well known descriptor for drunk
Not being 'faux' pedantic, I am being 'real' pedantic

Everyone I know in the UK says it (of many different ages). I also lived in various European countries, Asian countries and Australia (so met people from everywhere).

It is a word used by pretty much the entire English speaking world in this context nowadays

Goody2ShoesAndTheFilthyBeast · 14/11/2024 08:32

Will he not want to go through insurance who will ask questions?

Are you scared of him? Is that why you don't want him to know? Or does he just go on and on and you'll never hear the end of it and you can't be arsed?

KitsyWitsy · 14/11/2024 08:32

Are you American? Confused

I can’t imagine in what scenario I’d find it acceptable to not be able to be honest about something like this. Who cares? It can happen to anyone. My ex had his problems but even he wouldn’t have given a toss, even if the car was brand new. They can be fixed.

FiveShelties · 14/11/2024 08:28

Wow another thread started by someone who only posts once - how unusual, you could be forgiven for thinking it is a wind up 🙄🙄

coffeesaveslives · 14/11/2024 08:16

How did you damage it?

Don't lie - you'll inevitably get found out down the line.

Clearinguptheclutter · 14/11/2024 08:15

I did the same and considered lying but came clean
it was the right thing to do.
dh was annoyed but more at the situation than me
(a few months later he dinged it himself and it was far worse 😅. So we’re sort of even Stevens now)

My DH wouldn't give a toss about the car, as long as I was OK. That's what insurance is for and unless you go around ramming cars as a pass-time, I suggest that's why they call them 'accidents'.

That's carelessness, not an accident. The idea is NOT to damage vehicles or pedestrians when driving.

Tink3rbell30 · 14/11/2024 08:13

No, tell the truth.

Maraa · 14/11/2024 07:50

Just be honest, I know it’s hard. After an argument,
I went to drive away to get some space and reversed into my partners work loan car badly. It was a mess and my own fault, it worked out fine, we worked together to get it sorted

RosesAndHellebores · 14/11/2024 07:37

How much does the lie have to grow op? There's the lie about the scratch, which if you say was done when parked, there's a potential lie to the insurers which would be dreadful if found out. If no insurers, potentially a lie about the repair cost, possibly on a credit card.

It's a long climb to the top of the mountain of mistrust.

DappledThings · 14/11/2024 07:31

I remember my mum telling me a few years ago that she'd scratched their car and managed to hide it from my dad until he was at work and she got got it fixed without him knowing. I was shocked she felt she had to. DH would just want to know I was OK. He might be a pit pissed off (not pissed) that it had happened but not with me.

Well someone woke up on the wrong side of the bed this morning. @ClytemnestraWasMisunderstood you ok hun? Your reaction is not proportional. Breathe.

OP - sorry this happened. Please do consider the good advice of others on this thread. If you are genuinely scared of telling him, something is not right in your relationship.

Tho fwiw dh & I (v happily married) have both lied about scratching cars in the past. We both know each other did it. We still both maintain that our scratch came from being parked. But in that case it was about saving face rather than being at all worried about the other person’s reaction. Honesty is nearly always the best policy.

RevelryMum · 14/11/2024 07:25

I wouldn't the truth will out just be honest he will be annoyed but it will pass . Most important thing is nobody is hurt it's only a car

Pissed is in common language in the uk. I’m not sure this is the thread to be faux pendantic on.

I was being sarcastic
I know what 'pissed' means in America, but it has a different meaning here.
Unless one is trying to sound American, what with being ...super excited for...' , and 'pissed' about stuff

Lastonightadjsavedmylife · 14/11/2024 07:18

I’m also thinking the issue is you’re scared of your husband. Sure you can lie, but that only solves your immediate issue. It doesn’t solve the bigger problem that something is deeply wrong in your marriage, no one should be scared of their spouse.

when I’ve done this, I immediately say shit I’ve done x, husband helps solve it. That’s the way it should be.

honestasever · 14/11/2024 07:12

I assume you mean super pissed off.
It’s understandable that he will be if it’s his pride and joy and it’s ok for him to feel like that.

What’s wrong is how that makes you feel and if you’re scared? Personally, I would tell him what’s happened, apologise, tell him you understand he will be pissed off. It’s also important that you tell him that you were so worried about his reaction you considered lying.

Flatandhappy · 14/11/2024 07:12

I would be worried that you are obviously so concerned about his anger that you are contemplating lying. Tell him the truth and see what his reaction is, if he does get really angry you might need to rethink what kind of relationship you are prepared to tolerate.

i backed a new car into a post once as I had turned into the wrong driveway on a busy road and was trying to get out. DH’s only concern was for me, not a lump of metal. I was the one who was angry with myself.

sorrynotathome · 14/11/2024 07:11

WildGuide · 14/11/2024 07:07

You can, if you’re sure he won’t start asking whether you can get security footage etc., but the much bigger issue here is what it says about your relationship that you feel you can’t tell him. If you’re frightened or anxious about letting him know about something that was an accident, it’s a sign of a really unhealthy dynamic.
