Apoplectic that ITV have chosen Queen Camilla to host a documentary highlighting the domestic abuse of women when she was King Charle's OW for many years and complicit in his abuse of Princess Diana.

World gone mad!

I very much regarded her as the OW initially and didn't have much time for her. But over the years I have definitely changed my mind about her.

I very much regard her as the OW, and still don't have much time for her. I think it's appalling that she's now the Queen given that she basically slept her way to the top. In short, I'm no fan. BUT, anything that shines a light on domestic violence, and may help people who are facing abuse, has my support. Bad people can do good things.

WestwardHo1 · 12/11/2024 16:59

Bloody hell OP, can't you just be glad that someone high profile is shining a light on the issue.

If you actually watched the programme, you would have discovered that the charity had sent hundreds of letters to high profile women and none of them were prepared to be the face of the charity. They approached the then Duchess of Cornwall because they thought that she would be sympathetic and she was.

I think what she is doing is admirable. Can you imagine previous Queens saying the word "rape" and "sexual abuse" in public?

Couldn't leave the marriage, and yet, divorced.

At the time she couldn't just leave the marriage no. They were told to work it out.
It wasn't the done thing for the Prince of Wales to divorce. So they were stuck in the marriage for ages.

They had to later on get the queen and church leader's permission to separate, and then divorce.

All those actions by Diana are quite spiteful in light of her own behaviour in the marriage. It certainly makes me see her in a different light, manipulative maybe.

What do you mean "see her in a new light".

Surely you already knew that all of those things happened.

I see. I thought from your earlier posts you were coming at this from a position of concern for Diana. Her misfortune commenced many years before the royals decided to let Joe Public in on the act. So the relevant period for you would surely be the time she was 'the victim' not the time we got to hear about it?

She was the victim in the 1990s though. They were still married into the 1990s.

Sylviacrystal · 12/11/2024 16:55

What I don't like the charled and Diana thing is things said in paul burrells book.

He said that Charles bought the highgrove house, simply because it was near where camilla lived.

He said that camilla used to come round to Charles's house to visit him, and he (the butelr) would write in a diary who was coming.

Diana saw the diary, and the butler said that prince charles screamed at him, and told him that he had to lie to Diana. It was such a lot of lies.

And the worst thing is that Charles had all the power, he knew that Diana couldn't leave the marriage

Yes but why talk about when it just started.

A lot of the main explosive events happened in the 1990s.

In the 1990s -
Diana released a book, it mentioned Charles and Camillas affair.
Charles did a documentary admitting adultery.
Diana did an interview saying " there were three of us in the marriage."
Charles and Diana separated, and then divorced.

They all happened in the 1990s

What about charles doing a documentary aswell. Where he admitted adultery?

You mean to tell us you don't talk to the love of your life in a positive manner?

Theres a difference.

She was completely over the top with him, to manipulate him.

It's called love bombing to get your own way. She told him what he wanted to hear

She said to him once

"oh darling there's an awfully big brain in that head of yours isn't there, oh darling"

Menowhatdoyoucallit · 12/11/2024 16:49

Sylviacrystal · 12/11/2024 16:48

Or camilla is just the most manipulative of his side pieces.

I remember people saying that Camilla knew how to talk to Charles the way that he wanted. He wanted to be fawned over and constantly told he was amazing.

Camilla would constantly call him intelligent, amazing, wonderful

She sucked up to him

The affair is thought to have started in 1986 so nearer 40 years ago than 30 if we want to be pedantic.

Meh. Frankly I could care less given Diana was.a vile human being in her own right who had not an ounce of sympathy or empathy for the women whose husbands she slept with.

Aside from that, all this happened 40 years ago. most of the people posting in outrage here weren’t even born then. In fact there will be quite a few who weren’t even born when Diana died, but in typical virtual signalling manner have taken on a cause they know absolutely nothing about.

And to compare Camilla being the other woman where clearly the marriage shouldn’t have happened in the first place, where they were clearly mismatched, and have now ended up with the people they were meant to with domestic violence where women are often beaten, hospitalised, murdered by their partners is fucking offensive.

The difference between Charles and Diana’s affairs is that while were both wrong, Charles’ carried on with an affair with a woman he actually loved, who he should have married in the first place. Whereas Diana slept with anyone’s husband purely because she could. Because she was an expert manipulator. Because she thought she should be seen as something special. So if you’re looking to judge women for being the OW, the worst of the two was most definitely Diana.

40 years ago is incorrect anyway. A big part of the charles/camilla/Diana triangle happened in the 1990s, which was 30 years ago.

Diana died in 1997.

So anyone over 28 years old was alive when she died.

A lot of women in mumsnet are in their 30s, 40s, 50s and 60s and we remember it all!

I remember the long charles, Diana and Camilla shitshow in the 1990s.

NotOneOfTheInCrowd · 12/11/2024 16:16

Nope. Diana was responsible for her own conduct. Or do you think Will Carling’s wife should have blamed Camilla for the fact Dianna shagged her husband.

The only ones guilty of double standards are the ones treating Diana like some sort of saintly victim while Camilla was the devil. When Diana’s behaviour was significantly worse than Camilla’s.

I bet if Diana was still alive and did a documentary on dv people would be praising her to the hilt rather than accusing her of hypocrisy given the number of times she’d been the OW.

Is there a timeline for when we expect to see the findings and results of all these experts convening? If they are just siting there because William is there, then its useless. Kate has spent 10 years on her early childhood project and every 5 years we see a rudimentary pie chart produced. What results have been achieved, and how are they going to do it? If something comes out of these projects, great. But if they are just vehicles for people to sit around with Prince William, then what's the point of wasting the time of these experts?

Yes - stayed from the off. 5 years (and we’re now about 1 year in)

You obviously didn't know her as others did.

What Charles and the Royal family did to her was appalling and should not be forgotten or excused away with time or pathetic excuses such as 'Charles’ carried on with an affair with a woman he actually loved' - imagine if a woman like Diana came on the relationships thread and revealed just how she had been treated by her husband ...and mistress. There would be calls to lynch him never mind LTB.

Double standards. Charles has always been an entitled creep and Diana was totally exploited by the Royals. She did more to catapult them back into a positive limelight than anyone.

Camilla was exceedingly cruel and calculated as far as Diana was concerned. Is it any surprise due to the abuse, neglect of her husband and total trauma she suffered she acted so appallingly or is everyone saying it is fine for men to behave like utter shits in their marriage but a different rule for women?

Exactly.

As far as the programme last night hypocracy filled the air and it was merely to promote Camilla. Not all abuse leaves bruises. Princess Diana was put in an intolerable position by her entitled and selfish husband.

HRH Queen Elizabeth 2nd said before she died Camilla was to be called Queen Consort NOT Queen Camilla but Charles ignored her after death.

Funny how some (on Mumsnet particularly) seem to have a short memory.

Another example of the hypocrisy of the RF. Charles was abusive to Diana. Queen Camilla may not have been responsible but you can bet she's not going onto the programme saying, "my husband, an example of an abuser..."

Same way that the RF are poor and opportunistic landlords. But naturally they think the are the bastian of high moral standing.

EdithWeston · 12/11/2024 15:03

Sylviacrystal · 12/11/2024 11:51

This argument doesn't wash at all. We talk about camillas affair, and you bring up Diana's affair

If you think that Diana's affair is bad, then it also means that you think that Camillas affair is bad!!

Edited

Nothing of the sort.

i was responding to specific posts at various points along the thread, which I thought needed correction or expansion.

I think the work of both the Queen and the Duchess of Edinburgh is admirable against DV, other VAWG, FGM and rape as a tool of war.

And I am always pleased when it gets some prime time coverage, as these important issues that rarely get coverage.

And I don’t think the motivation is anything as transient as PR management (the RF is on totally different timelines anyhow) as there is longevity to their support, and the start of a level of knowledge, even expertise, that you only get from involvement that is counted in decades. Though of course they aren’t in their roles as experts - they are supporting and showcasing the experts and drawing attention to the issues, the victims (notably Sophie’s recent visit) and those who work to counter the violence.

I am going to say this loudly and proudly. I like Camilla. It takes a real strength of character to face up to all the very public criticism she's had thrown at her for 20+ years (as well as navigating her role with her husband and his 2 children). She serves this country well and with dignity.

Everyone in the royal family has faced up to criticism though.
Remember how much criticism Diana went through, how much criticism fergie went through, how much criticism they all went through
