AIBU - Mother in Law's dress at my wedding.

My mother in law ( mother of the groom ) has sent me a picture of the dress she ordered today, asking for 'honest opinion on if it's appropriate'

However when I gave honest opinion, she didn't like it and is rejecting anything I say.

We are getting married in August, in Spain... the very is a very citrus sevillian orange feel...

I've decorated it with bright orange flowers, grape fruits, my bridesmaids are a creamy yellow, my husband to be will be in beige as will his groomsmen, my father and his father.

His mum has decided to wear a black dress, similar shape to mine WITH A TRAIN!!!!!!!

Am I wrong in saying 'can we keep it a little more summery, light and shaped less BRIDAL?'

I don't mind what other guests wear but she will be in a lot of the family group official photos, I've put a lot of thought in my wedding colour palette to want the photos to be vibrant.

I know MN hates wedding talk and I'll probably be slagged off - but hey ho, ultimately AIBU? I'm so chilled in every other wedding aspect.

Showed the picture to my DH who laughed and said 'someone is desperate to upstage the bride!'

Apolloneuro · 11/11/2024 15:20

Bloody hell. Is your MIL Sophia Loren?!

Or was it Raquel Welch that tried to upstage the bride at her son’s wedding?

Newdaynewstarts · 11/11/2024 15:19

is she winding you up? I know someone who this … all the I’m wearing black blah blah … not with train lol. All along she planned to surprise her friends by wearing pink. Bloody stupid and attention seeking.

Silvers11 · 11/11/2024 15:17

For those who haven't read all the OPs posts - this is a picture of the actual dress OP posted earlier

curtaintwitcher78 · 11/11/2024 15:15

It's not fair to you or your mother. Stupid attention-seeker needs to tone it right down.

Namechangefordaughterevasion · 11/11/2024 15:15

She asked, you answered.

it's definitely inappropriate for a wedding , even if it wasn't black, it's an absolute showstopper and might be perceived as a deliberate attempt to upstage the bride.

Is she Spanish by any chance? I know that wedding guests at Spanish weddings dress much more formally than we Brits do. Full on evening glamour rather than the very smart day dress styles we are more used to.

She's had plenty of notice that the dress isn't on the right lines so she's got time to reflect, get over any disappointment and look for something more suitable.

And I hope she gets another chance to wear that beautiful dress. If you are having a rehearsal dinner maybe she could wear it then?

Dora33 · 11/11/2024 15:14

Black dress fine for Mil but it having a train also is too much. Especially as she has said she wanted to get a dress similar to yours. That's not good.
I would advise not to go too much on everyone in bridal party only wearing certain colours.
Have been to weddings where this had been done with different shades of colours / colour themes and it can look quite bland.
Your mother & mil wearing different colours such as black / navy / red / etc will break up the monotony of of the beige / yellow etc.

Peachy2005 · 11/11/2024 15:13

I think maybe you’ve overdone it with the whole “making her feel included in everything”idea and now she can’t see past trying to look as amazing as possible, regardless of actually looking like a try-hard idiot in the heat! Is she trying to compensate for something she missed out on in the past or hoping people will think she’s the main character or could be a bridesmaid?

Even if that dress was in a different colour, you need to be clear that the style is not appropriate.

caringcarer · 11/11/2024 15:12

A black dress with a train for your summer wedding. She must hate you OP. I'd tell her no she can't wear it or won't be invited.

StandingSideBySide · 11/11/2024 15:09

Ok so I assumed by OPs title she was on a MIL bashing rant but my goodness
Black with a train.

Is it like this OP

Do they? That's why I was asking. There's always an enormous fuss on here about "what it will look like in the photos"? How often do these photos get looked at?

For some people, photos are important, for others they aren’t. Obviously in this case they are, so your question seemed a bit unnecessary imo

LadyGabriella · 11/11/2024 15:09

Yabu. As long as it isn’t white, it’s ok. You can’t be this controlling. That’s what she wants and is comfortable in.

BotanicalGreen · 11/11/2024 15:05

The train sounds a bit of a faff for a Continental summer wedding. Black for your son's wedding - definitely not. Agree with PP that black still has very funereal significance in Spain.

The last three weddings I’ve been to (and know B&G well!) have never bothered with getting wedding photos printed out 😂 they had them digitally but didn’t do anything with them.

I see wedding photos on FB all the time. I guess people who are not on social media send the best ones to guests, friends and family or print and frame a selection.

CatJumpingApple · 11/11/2024 15:04

My sister wore an awful boxy shirt skirt suit, probably some designer made thing, in off white to my nephews wedding,

I was horrified on her behalf.

The mother of the bride wore cream, perhaps to counter act my sister.

who knows?

The bride looked beautiful

u3ername · 11/11/2024 15:04

If you can find some wedding photos of families with a similar theme to yours - summer colours+ similar venue setting, you can screenshot and send them to her to say this is what you have in mind and dark colours will be contradictory.

I can't believe she chose black. I was expecting to read 'royal blue/ navy' and would still say she's being U.

mitogoshigg · 11/11/2024 15:03

I would say that the top is more inappropriate at the age she must be (my age or older.

But I reiterate, dark including black is common

Are you sure she wasn't pulling your leg?

Sounds better than orange! Is she inviting Trump to continue the colour scheme?

MrTiddlesTheCat · 11/11/2024 15:00

She's going to look like the ghost of a jilted lover. i'm cringing for her.

Mummyoflittledragon · 11/11/2024 15:00

MumofHennHals · 11/11/2024 13:55

No she doesn't hate me, we have an amazing relationship.

She came with me and my mum to pick my wedding dress and I've paid for her to have her hair and makeup done alongside my bridesmaids and mum on the wedding day in the bridal suite,

she's a mother of boys and I wanted to ensure she had an experience she didn't get with the other sons weddings and make her feel included like a mother of the bride would be as I know she won't ever get that chance.

We spend a lot of time together without her son there. I think maybe my reaction wasn't the AMAZING she normally would've got from me and I've pissed her off.

I'm normally so calm and collected, nothing phases me.. but with it being the wedding and I've planned it for a year all on my own, it's tipped me over the edge as I imagined family photos on my wall being stunningly bright and vibrant.

She quoted 'I wanted a dress in keeping with yours with the same style' sorry? NO!

Your future MIL wants the MOB style experience she didn’t get from her other sons’ weddings. I think this is the time to be really clear that she isn’t going to get this experience in that dress. You are supposed to be the one standing out and in a unique dress. She should not and cannot wear the mourning version of your dress. It is incredibly rude. She’s obviously somehow got carried away and needs to be reined in.

Katiesaidthat · 11/11/2024 15:00

Youcunnyfunt · 11/11/2024 14:13

That’s actually traditional for the mother of the groom in Spain 😂 that’s exactly what she is supposed to wear for a Spanish wedding

Haha pull the other one!😂

Roryno · 11/11/2024 15:00

That is just weird and pretty horrible of her. Can’t her son or someone have a word and tell her she’s being unreasonable? People will gasp when they see her and probably laugh. And I imagine you, at half her age, are going to look better in that style of dress however good her figure is. What was she thinking? Has she been watching too much Rivals??😃

IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle · 11/11/2024 15:00

UrsulasHerbBag · 11/11/2024 14:31

My mum would wither any MIL of mine that turned up to my wedding in a bloody black widows wedding dress! Your guests will judge her as either a tragic attention seeker or think she is in mourning for her son. She is competing with you on your wedding day. Not nice behaviour.

I wouldn't think that. I'd just think "awful dress" because I think that sort of pseudo Hollywood fake glamourous dresses are awful.

Does anyone actually look at wedding photos anyway?

Why wouldn’t they
