AIBU - Mother in Law's dress at my wedding.

My mother in law ( mother of the groom ) has sent me a picture of the dress she ordered today, asking for 'honest opinion on if it's appropriate'

However when I gave honest opinion, she didn't like it and is rejecting anything I say.

We are getting married in August, in Spain... the very is a very citrus sevillian orange feel...

I've decorated it with bright orange flowers, grape fruits, my bridesmaids are a creamy yellow, my husband to be will be in beige as will his groomsmen, my father and his father.

His mum has decided to wear a black dress, similar shape to mine WITH A TRAIN!!!!!!!

Am I wrong in saying 'can we keep it a little more summery, light and shaped less BRIDAL?'

I don't mind what other guests wear but she will be in a lot of the family group official photos, I've put a lot of thought in my wedding colour palette to want the photos to be vibrant.

I know MN hates wedding talk and I'll probably be slagged off - but hey ho, ultimately AIBU? I'm so chilled in every other wedding aspect.

Just saw the dress. It is like a vampire wedding dress! Someone needs to talk sense into your MIL. I would tell her straight that if she is wearing that aberration, she is not in your wedding photos. I feel sorry for you OP. You are not being unreasonable at all.

No she doesn't hate me, we have an amazing relationship.

She came with me and my mum to pick my wedding dress and I've paid for her to have her hair and makeup done alongside my bridesmaids and mum on the wedding day in the bridal suite,

she's a mother of boys and I wanted to ensure she had an experience she didn't get with the other sons weddings and make her feel included like a mother of the bride would be as I know she won't ever get that chance.

We spend a lot of time together without her son there. I think maybe my reaction wasn't the AMAZING she normally would've got from me and I've pissed her off.

I'm normally so calm and collected, nothing phases me.. but with it being the wedding and I've planned it for a year all on my own, it's tipped me over the edge as I imagined family photos on my wall being stunningly bright and vibrant.

She quoted 'I wanted a dress in keeping with yours with the same style' sorry? NO!

I’m in Spain right now

its hot here and a black dress with a train will be boiling for her

her make up will melt.

CruCru · 11/11/2024 16:54

Having seen the price, I suspect it will arrive and she will try it on and be disappointed with it. Then she will find something else.

Some of the suggestions on here are so unkind they are quite weird. Getting people to snigger at her? Cutting her out of the wedding? Unless there really is a back story then all this is about is a dress that isn't very appropriate.

Gymnopedie · 11/11/2024 16:54

I don’t think anyone is likely to see a black dress as ‘bridal’, train or no train, anyway.

I sure as hell would. That one definitely.
(And I'd add in all the other associations with the MOG wearing black to boot.)

frenchanglaisbaby · 11/11/2024 16:54

She asked, you replied.... Leave her to it. My Mil chose something quite similar to my mums dress which I spent ages worrying about as I didn't want to upset either by pointing this out. In the end no one will be looking at her, they will be looking at you. Anyway, she'll regret it.... August in Spain in a black dress, she'll be sweating her tits off!

AttilaTheMeerkat · 11/11/2024 16:51

What does your fiance think of his mother's dress?.

I would uninvite her now. You do not have the relationship with her you think you do. She is doing this to cause trouble and upset.

In addition this is being done by her deliberately to get attention/supply at your wedding where the attention is on your husband and you. Narcissistic type behaviour like this should not at all be rewarded.

DaylightTreachery · 11/11/2024 13:22

Honestly, I don’t think you can veto other people’s clothes. She asked for your opinion, you gave it to her, but what she does in response to that is up to her.

I don’t think anyone is likely to see a black dress as ‘bridal’, train or no train, anyway.

I agree with this

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 11/11/2024 16:49

I’d be annoyed as it does look like a black bridal dress. I mean out of all the styles and colours she chose and she chose that?!

I’d be trying to get her son to change her mind.

ttcat37 · 11/11/2024 16:46

“Well I’m not having you in my pictures wearing a black wedding dress Barbara, sorry. Maybe something a little more cheerful and less… wedding dress? Do you want to go shopping?”

HollaHolla · 11/11/2024 16:42

MumofHennHals · 11/11/2024 14:02

Said dresz

Picture also taken in Seville, if I'm not mistaken!
The dress is a NO, BTW

Davros · 11/11/2024 16:41

So what if she's ordered it? She can send it back

Jiook · 11/11/2024 16:41

LookItsMeAgain · 11/11/2024 16:38

@MumofHennHals - the issue is that she has ordered this dress, whether you like it or not (not as it turns out which is perfectly within your scope to not like her dress).

However, she has ordered it.

Did she mention to you before she ordered it, that this was the style she was looking to wear? Also you mentioned it's black, I wouldn't have said to her that it was to be less bridal in appearance, perhaps you may have had more success from her if you said that you didn't like it as it was too funereal in appearance??? ⛪☠⚰

I think absolutely the problem is that it's a bridal dress!

The colour scheme is a red herring, it's the fact she's coming in a wedding dress which is absolutely mortifying!

Morecoffeeforme · 11/11/2024 16:41

CatamaranViper · 11/11/2024 14:12

In which case, buy her a dress you like.

I'm sorry but you do not get to dictate what other people wear unless you are paying for it or they want you to. She isn't a prop for your special day.

My MIL wore black to our wedding because she felt more comfortable wearing black.

Have you seen the dress?!

it’s literally a wedding dress in black! She will look ridiculous

Elseaknows · 11/11/2024 16:40

Ask her if she is grieving? 😂

ohnoDS · 11/11/2024 16:36

I recently went to a wedding where the MIL was deliberately over-dressed to try and outshine the bride...she looked expensive, and over-done...and ridiculous. All the other guests could see what she was trying to do, and it did not go down well with any of them; she was noticeable for all the wrong reasons.

As the bride you will be naturally beautiful, shining with happiness and the centre of attention - if your MIL tries to compete with that she will end up looking shallow and pathetic. Either get your DP to say something, or even better just ignore it, certainly don't spend any energy stressing about it.

TriangleLight · 11/11/2024 16:36

Oh, @MumofHennHals this is so bad it’s funny 🙈

IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle · 11/11/2024 16:35

Youvebeenframed · 11/11/2024 16:11

It’s a beautiful dress but it is essentially a bridal gown.
She will look like a (very glamorous) gangster’s widow.. 🥴

I see A LOT of weddings in Spain and I have NEVER seen the MOB or MOG in black, let alone a bridal gown …. She will stand out like a sore thumb 😬

It's an awful dress. She will look ridiculous.

Gymnopedie · 11/11/2024 16:32

OP if she insists on wearing it brief a few of your friends to very pointedly look at her and snigger. I'm sure they won't need any encouraging.

Karmaisagod · 11/11/2024 16:31

@MumofHennHals is she not British? I think in Southern Europe people do wear black to weddings. That dress is totally not on, though. I know you said you have a great relationship, but I wondered if she was, consciously or unconsciously, trying to compete with you?

Mummyoflittledragon · 11/11/2024 16:31

Jiook · 11/11/2024 15:37

Could you use the link someone posted up thread to point out it's literally a wedding dress and therefore inappropriate?

www.moonlightbridal.com/Product/MoonlightCouture/H1549B/

OMG it’s literally described as a wedding dress. And that picture of the train from the back. Just no no no.

LadyGabriella · 11/11/2024 16:31

If it’s the black moonlight bridal one then yes, that train is nuts.

Arran2024 · 11/11/2024 16:30

I think she is being passive aggressive and your only option is to tell her how much you love it as she is clearly trying to wind you up.

Cm19841 · 11/11/2024 16:28

Say nothing more. Let her wear it - you gave your feedback. Her dress doesn't sound like it suits the venue or season. Her choice.

Make sure you take some photos that are what you want - and accept that there will be some photos featuring MIL that don't work so well.

Necky1 · 11/11/2024 16:26

Oh for goodnes sake she is going to make some tit of herself dressed in that.

Like some evil step mother hovering.

Sorry OP but it made me laugh.
She must be a bit dense to think that would fly.
