To think many designer bags I see are actually fakes

Talking at work about designer bags and I mentioned that when our mortgage is paid off I’d maybe treat myself to a fancy bag. Colleague mentioned that many designer bags we see out and about are fake

thinking about it: many that I see carrying Chanel, goyard, LV etc bags could be fake. I would have no idea how to check or not.

Why would anybody buy a fake Fjallraven bag? They are only £75, the knockoffs must be absolute shit.

I have a fake kanken, it's fully waterproof has lasted 8 years and shows no sign of wear. As a disabled person on benefits "only" £75 is our weekly food budget.

Nat6999 · 11/11/2024 23:38

I've got a fake LV bag & someone who sells real ones said it was so good a fake that they would have trouble telling it from a real one without going through every stitch on it.

SalviaDivinorum · 11/11/2024 23:01

Oh dear -I'm very "casual" but my Mulberries are very real.

As is the LV backpack which I actually never use as I know people will assume it's fake.TBH I don't actually like it much myself. It was a gift but unfortunately in the monogrammed finish.

BusyBeatle · 11/11/2024 22:40

I can tell fakes maybe because I love bags and spend so much time viewing the collections, adding and removing things from my wishlist. I was surprised by how many people swore blind I would get good fakes in Turkey. When I was there, I was convinced. I would come back feeling like an idiot for wasting money on real bags when I could get a really good dupe. But none of the dupes looked real, the styles were off, the colours were off. All in all I could tell the fakes. I have several luxury designer bags. I hardly ever look polished. I try to avoid carrying the obvious looking ones when I look a mess because I just know people will assume they're fake. I looked horrific today but wore a gorgeous designer bag with no visible logo. There are so many designers to choose from, some classic, some fun. You can be bold, experiment with colour. Oooh I just love bags.

Isn't it all a load of nonsense? Who cares ?

I recently saw a woman with THE tackiest pink Chanel trainers. Obvious market-stall fakes.

And then I saw her get in to her Bentley, and decided they were probably real. Still hideously tacky though.

As soon as you said tacky I knew they were going to be real Chanel 😂

Kool4katz · 11/11/2024 21:38

I only use bags I've designed and made myself so they're all unique and suit my purposes. 😊

I’m actually surprised at the mulberry fakes: wasn’t actually expecting them. But then again, I’ve also seen falraven and longchamp fakes, and they are more affordable than mulberry bags.
💼

Me too and I don’t know why. Is a fake mulberry still a really nice leather bag? I don’t care about labels so I’d be happier to have a no logo lovely leather bargain bag.

KitsyWitsy · 11/11/2024 21:31

I’m surprised at fake mulberry bags. They’re not even that expensive, comparatively.

My bags are all Coach, Kate Spade and Mulberry. I would never have fakes. Would rather just do without. I wouldn’t get more expensive bags even though I could afford it as it extends into ‘too flashy’ for me.

Notcontent · 11/11/2024 21:27

There’s a lot of fake Goyard bags about

Yes - I see lots of young women with them on my way to work - no way are they real.

Ireolu · 11/11/2024 21:22

I have several designer handbags. 6 Chanel handbags. All from the boutique. I do not care if anyone thinks they are fake. Perfect, means I hopefully won't get mugged. The reasoning of they are soo expensive so they are definitely fake is flawed. I bought my first chanel in 2015, they cost much more now than they did then. One I bought all those years ago could earn me twice as much as I paid as it was limited edition. Wore it to a wedding in August, got several compliments. I haven't paid big bucks for a bag in years. Doubt I ever will again. No regrets though, I enjoy and am grateful for all I have regardless of whether a random thinks fake.

bows101 · 11/11/2024 20:27

I love playing spot the fake!
There's some really convincing ones on the market now.

I would say it's a 50/50 situation of real & fake.

I'm your everyday type of woman, I don't have a massively high paying job but I do have a few thousands pounds worth of genuine bags. So if I can afford them, then other normal women can too. Although I now don't buy new bags (unless Bicester/preloved) because the prices have dramatically increased in the last 5 years and outpriced me :-(

Papyrophile · 11/11/2024 20:26

I have a fake Mulberry bag, although I rarely bring it out. Bought in a Dubai soukh, it's a very close replica, until you look at the hardware, which is a little too bright and shiny, and nowhere near heavy enough to be real. But I don't use it much because I don't love it.

StarDolphins · 11/11/2024 20:22

With the rise of Hacoo, I always assume they’re fake. I think I’ve seen a handful where I’ve thought real.

usernother · 11/11/2024 20:19

Tik Tok is awash with fake designer bags. I don't know why they allow it. That's why you don't see them in markets any more, it's all online.

Daschund · 11/11/2024 20:13

I live near the Mulberry shop in York. Mine probably look fake along with a couple of Coach (gifts from DS when he visited NY twice at Christmas) because I'm generally not into designer gear but I do love a great handbag.

Toastthemosttoo · 11/11/2024 20:09

My sister bought my kids fake designer sunglasses - I had to explain to the kids that fake designer glasses were unlikely to have certified UVA/UVB eye protection and were only fit for the bin - what a shit gift.

Toastthemosttoo · 11/11/2024 19:59

I usually think they are fake. You need to look really expensive for the thought not to cross my mind.

Mickey79 · 11/11/2024 19:55

I just put my phone and keys in my jacket pocket and I only use a bag when I have too ( nights out mainly). I wouldn’t notice or be interested in what label/ brand was on someone’s bag,

Edingril · 11/11/2024 19:53

Well if I like a bag I like a bag I don't get
this obsession with labels and needing something to be designer, not counting thr sweat shops used to make real or fake ones

Paying a lot for someone sticking a label on it is what makes them want to fake it in the first place

Cappuccinowithonesugarplease · 11/11/2024 19:52

It's hard to tell from a distance, I used to buy, recondition and sell preloved mulberry bags, and I can always tell the real from the fakes but only close up.
Louis Vuitton are the most common fakes ive seen, real louis Vuitton bags are not worth the price tag by a long shot.

DancingLions · 11/11/2024 19:51

I have several designer bags and am as far from polished as you could be 😂
I guess everyone thinks they're fake then!

The reason I like bags is that my weight has fluctuated a lot, even my shoe size has changed over time. So I don't want to spend massive amounts on clothes and shoes whereas a bag will always fit.

There's generally a decent resale value on them too if they're looked after so I see them as an insurance policy of sorts.

I wouldn't see the point in a fake. Even if it was so good that no one else knew, I would know. I'd feel I was cheating myself!

You can tell they are fake when they are being carried around b&m and Primark according to a meme I saw recently 🤣
