Ok. Fully prepared to be told I am unreasonable but I’m nearly choking from clutching my pearls here….

  1. on a plane last week. Child with iPad on full volume. No attempt to reduce volume and no headphones in sight. No one except me seemed to be bothered so I quietly seethed.

  2. in John Lewis today. Cafe. Quiet and calm except for parents entertaining toddler by playing baby shark over and over. I felt I had to leave. No one else seemed to even flinch.

  3. the gym yesterday. Watching greys anatomy with my headphones on. Still had subtitles because the noise from spin was a LOT. Guy gets on the one next to me and sticks a programme on full volume. I went for pointed look but not up for confrontation tbh. He moved around the gym with his super loud programme following him.

IS THIS NORMAL. Or am I turning into cranky old bint. Am only 46. Didn’t see it coming.

Sometimes I'm tired and can't be bothered to do anything but usually I ask people to turn it down or use their headphones.

I had to be asked myself once. I was using headphones but didn't realise that I hadn't pushed them into my tablet properly. I was mortified.

it happened to me once. It was mortifying.

Yet people are happy to play anything at max volume and don’t give a shit.

I’m tempted to play some classical music at full volume on my phone when it happens! I choose the quiet coach on trains, and keep my fingers crossed. Even there it can be noisy. I am old!

Last time I was booked in the quiet carriage three women in their 30s got on, sat round a table and started a loud conversation. After half an hour one of the other passengers asked them to be quiet. They ignored her. Then I asked them to be quiet. One of them waved me away. I moved from my reserved seat and went to complain to the train manager. I was told they were allowed to talk in the quiet carriage. ‘So what’s the point of my reserving a seat in the quiet carriage?’ I asked. No reply to that.

In the train last week, the guy across the aisle was watching clips on his phone with the volume on.
The guard walked past and asked him to put headphones on, which he did.
Sorted.
(I was too chicken to ask!)

Interesting that he actually had earphones but didn’t use them initially.

i think it’s down to people being more entitled these days. Everyone thinks that their comfort comes before anyone else’s comfort.

and a lot of people are addicted to their phones.

if someone was being loud because they were talking about a family emergency then I wouldn’t mind. But most people are listening to music or aimlessly scrolling due to their addiction.

Baneofmyexistence · 11/11/2024 07:01

I took my child to their dance class and one other child spent the whole lesson whistling and stamping her dance heels on the wooden floor. She was whistling over the instructions, stamping during the group dance and ruining it. Both parents just there with an inane grin on their faces and did nothing.

I feel like people have become noticeably more inconsiderate in public spaces. Maybe it’s a shift that happened since Covid, or maybe we’re just more aware of it now after being used to the calm and quiet of our own homes. Either way, it’s hard not to notice it now.

My husband really struggles with the noise and crowds these days, and he never been like that until Covid. I sometimes joke that I’ll get him ear defenders! I don’t feel it as much yet, but I can see myself getting there too.

People strolling across the road in front of vehicles which have to slow down really pissed me off too.
I feel like mowing the selfish buggers down

I do that sometimes.

From my POV, drivers are often the selfish bastards who don't give a fuck about pedestrians.

I hate the way that cars dominate towns and cities. If you ever see really early film of people going about their business, it's striking how people have the freedom to walk along roads.

Devonjaguar · 11/11/2024 06:50

YANBU. I hate it when people watch videos or FaceTime on loud in waiting areas or restaurants. It's so rude

SharpOpalNewt · 11/11/2024 06:45

It's easy to get sucked in to moaning about things. I could also talk about how kind, generous and polite lots of people are and all the times people have behaved extremely well or exceeded expectations.

And I do sometimes fart in the gym on the treadmil or at yoga though obviously I try not to. Not quite sure of the fart volume when I have headphones on 😂

Same shit, different presentation. There have always been antisocial idiots one way or another. Look for the positives and not just a bunch of things to moan about.

Well I suppose people haven't taken to breaking wind loudly in public yet... that's a positive I guess?

YANBU. I was on a coach trip a few weeks ago, I was shattered and just wanted to relax but the woman right behind me was watching really annoying crap memes or something on her phone at full whack, she was easily in her 60s so not young, it grated on me the whole journey and I couldn’t relax, I thought it was so rude and inconsiderate. If you want to listen to crap in busy places wear bloody headphones! I’m not good at confrontation so I just seethed quietly for the several hour journey and was glad when it was time to get off.

MumOfOneAllAlone · 10/11/2024 21:57

Yanbu op, people seem more selfish than ever before

My dd sometimes has the tablet but the volume is as low as possible

This isn't to get at you in particular as you not alone but this is what I don't understand. I have 4 kids, all teens or older now and we never used screens when out. It's not essential. And if you do then use headphones. Or do something silent.

LastsliceofBattenberg · 11/11/2024 06:20

YANBU. I had to tell two women in their 20s to stop constantly talking throughout a film at the cinema the other day. Meanwhile, several mobile phones lighting up throughout the film. Hell is other people and grown adults should not need to be told this stuff!

camelfinger · 11/11/2024 06:16

It’s the conversations on speaker phone that bother me most. Talking apprentice-style into the end of the phone. Does the other person know that their private conversation is being broadcast to the whole bus? I’d be mortified if that was my voice at top volume.

EverythingAllatOnceAllTheTime · 11/11/2024 06:10

I resort to playing Classical music - at the same volume as the offender.

I have genuinely done it a few times although tbf it was only effective on one occasion.

You do get some odd stares though - I suppose if I was playing Drill or diss rap, it would be fine.

hattie43 · 11/11/2024 05:39

Noise pollution is now the graffiti of yesterday . Also I think people have become more selfish .

SharpOpalNewt · 11/11/2024 05:39

Zanatdy · 11/11/2024 05:28

Nothing annoys me more than people watching reels on loud on the train. Bring your blooming headphones or don’t watch on public transport.

Pat888 · 11/11/2024 04:35

I think that years ago you could tell someone off or threaten them and there were no repercussions - now you would get arrested for threatening behaviour - there would be cctv of your actions on the bus for example.

Attempts to discourage bad behaviour have backfired and no one can do anything about anyone. The yobs win.

Sheri99 · 11/11/2024 01:59

Getting older does not make one more cranky, unless there is a reason, such as being sick or debilitated, in pain.

No one likes excess noise, light, traffic, annoyances. Older people may be more likely to speak up because after a particular age one does not care what others may think, being older has it's benefits; rude is rude.

smooththecat · 11/11/2024 01:42

Honestly, you need really good noise cancelling headphones now if you’re sensitive to noise. I was on a bus the other week and this guy just shouted into to his phone the whole way. Hell is other people.

Pickandmixmood · 11/11/2024 01:41

coxesorangepippin · 11/11/2024 01:39

i threw a mint at someone on the train once and stared him dead in the eye.

^

😂

If someone had started a thread on here saying that a mint was thrown at them on a train the response would have been that it was assault and the perpetrator was batshit crazy 😀🤣

YaNBU. Someone was telling me the other day HD was on the bus and asked someone to turn their music on their phone down, he said he was trying to explain that he was autistic and sometimes sound was overwhelming to him. The response? He was spat on and told to fuck off.

I think that people are genuinely becoming more rude and people who tech their kids that their phones are allowed to be on in public at full volume are just ensuring the next generation are just as self centred.
