I (32F) have been married to my husband (35M) for 7 years, and recently I’ve made the decision to end things as result of him emotionaly abusing me and file for divorce. I truly believe I did the right thing, but now I am getting nasty messages and threats from his family saying they feel I’m overreacting and they have the audacity to say I am being the unreasonable one.

Here’s the situation. For a while now, I’ve felt emotionally drained by my husband. He can be pretty aggressive, always criticising me in subtle ways like making comments about my cooking or telling me I’m not “doing enough” exercise or helping out around the house. But I know I’m a good person and I work hard, so I just ignored his complaints. He’d get frustrated, but I figured if he really loved me, he’d understand how hard I’m working and not push me so much. The problem is, I don’t think he ever gave me enough credit for what I do. I’d often get irritated with him for not appreciating me, so I’d start ignoring him when he tried to talk to me. If he asked for affection or help with something, I’d tell him he needed to earn it by being more considerate.I felt like he needed to learn his lesson. I wouldn’t let him kiss me or touch me or have any physical contact, and I made sure to remind him how I didn’t “need him.” I told him he was lucky to have me at all, and that he should be grateful. One time, when he left the house for a few hours, I went through his phone because I suspected something was off. I found nothing, but I made a huge scene anyway, accusing him of cheating just to see how he would react and if he would admit to any infedility. I told him that i felt he was a liar and couldn’t be trusted, even though I had no solid proof. After that, I kept bringing it up in every argument, telling him that he’d already proven how much of a “failure” he was and that he needed to change before I could forgive him.Eventually, I decided I couldn’t live with him anymore. I reported him for emotional abuse because I felt like his constant criticism and lack of appreciation were wearing me down. When I told him I was filing for divorce, he begged me to reconsider, but I was firm in my decision. I told him that I couldn’t take any more of his manipulation and constant cristism and that I deserved to be happy. Now that the dust has settled, all of his family are saying I have been way too harsh in calling a simple breakup "abuse". They said to my face if anyones the abuser its me as I’ve been controlling by using affection as a bargaining chip, and that I was unreasonable by going through his phone and accusing him of things with no proof. They even say I’ve been emotionally abusive in my own way as one time he confessed to his mother that I was always making him feel like he was always walking on eggshells.I honestly don’t see it that way at all. I was just trying to protect myself from someone who didn’t appreciate me. I truly believe I’ve been the victim in all of this.

Your behaviour is emotionally abusive yes. You don’t give a lot of examples of what your husband has behaved like? Maybe your both emotionally abusive and toxic.

Catza · 10/11/2024 20:44

Well, let me be the first one to call reverse...

Michelle12A · 10/11/2024 20:48

I don’t think this is real

How on God's earth has my behaviour been abusive?

You say I didn't give examples of abuse from my husband but did I not say he was constantly criticising and being aggressive and being verbally hurtful towards me.

Ooh let's see. Gaslighting, snooping, lying , withholding any affection. I'm surprised he didn't dump you, you sound awful.

And what about being aggressive slamming hammers in front of me trying to intimidate me, do you call that abusive?

So you are both as bad as each other. But you can change. The first step is to admit that you are an abuser. There are some organisations which can help you to rehabilitate once you do.

MrsPostmanPat · 10/11/2024 21:03

He's abusive, but you're just as bad.

nam3c4ang3 · 10/11/2024 21:05

You are both as bad as each other….

Kneebonefuture · 10/11/2024 21:06

Reverse! Either that or you're a nutjob

TwinklyAmberOrca · 10/11/2024 21:09

This has to be a reverse post!

PickAChew · 10/11/2024 21:10

Your relationship is utterly toxic and neither of you are behaving well. You should end it regardless of which of you may be the most at fault.

StarDolphins · 10/11/2024 21:11

Well that took a sinister turn😱

ScanaDully · 10/11/2024 21:12

You sound emotionally abusive too.

Itisjustmyopinion · 10/11/2024 21:12

You are as bad as him and sounds like you would be better off alone

You can’t do what you are doing and say it’s only him that’s causing emotional abuse

Pinkbonbon · 10/11/2024 21:13

Assuming uts a reverse but ...

You don't have to prove anything to anyone.
It's your life. You can divorce for any reason you like. Even if abuse wasn't a factor.

'I don't love him anymore'. That's that.
You don't owe anyone a relationship.

HaudYerWheeshtYaWeeBellend · 10/11/2024 21:13

I’m a this a reverse?

Either way both sides are displaying emotional and mental toxic behaviors and the combination is destructive.

I wouldn’t care what his family and friends say, they are not seeing things from an impartial perspective.

Jammydodger1981 · 10/11/2024 21:13

This is clearly a reverse, nobody is this in denial about their own behaviour. Real abusive people (like my ex husband) wouldn’t admit to doing any of that, he only discloses things he thinks paint himself in a good light.

I call MRA, trying to prove that women will stick up for women no matter what. Really inconsiderate to those of us who have actually lived through this stuff.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 10/11/2024 21:15

Who cares? You need to get divorced asap and then you'll never have to deal with any of them ever again.

Garlicpest · 10/11/2024 21:17

Agree with PPs. It sounds like you're both 'programmed' to devalue, put down and needle your partners. This probably underlies why you were attracted to each other: we tend to seek out partners who will join in our relationship schema. You often hear people saying they need a challenging partner, for instance. They mean someone who'll withstand what they dish out and give some back.

He abused you by constantly putting you down. You retaliated by accusing him of cheating, even though you knew he wasn't, and berating him over this.

Yes, you should divorce. You're bad for each other. If you wish to be happier in the future, get therapy so you can understand your schemas and how to be calmer in your relationships, giving and receiving respect as well as love.

AcrossthePond55 · 10/11/2024 21:18

@SillyPlumShaker

Listen, anyone can end a marriage for any reason, or no reason at all. You decided to end your marriage. At this point that's all that matters. Quit trying to apportion blame or justify your decision.

Block his family, you don't have to be in contact with them. If you're spreading his 'misdeeds', real or imagined, around the town, just stop it. No good can come of it.

Concentrate on yourself. Get into counseling. Speak to a professional about what you felt was right and wrong about his behaviour and your own. Work on yourself so you can do better next time.

EG94 · 10/11/2024 21:23

Very little details on his abuse, lots on yours. I wouldn’t like to assume as I have been in an emotionally abusive relationship and I did behave in ways that I feel shameful of. I was however always every single time triggered and always, still do, wish I hadn’t of behaved that way. You seem to justify what you did which is exactly what abusers do. You invaded his privacy because he did this. Own YOUR behaviour. Withholding sex is abusive just so you know.

why do you care what his family say? I actually came out realising what he tells others I did is actually probably true, I will of done and said all the things he tells others but I am also sure he will have conveniently left out his behaviour . Ie he said he wanted to sleep with other women. I packed his stuff and told him to leave. He doesn’t tell people what he said just I packed his stuff and asked him to leave. Without context I would seem like the abusive one. I however know the truth so his opinions and his families opinions are worthless to me.

I think you do need to do a bit or work on yourself. Invest in some therapy. Be a better you 😊

SleepingStandingUp · 10/11/2024 21:24

I’d start ignoring him when he tried to talk to me. Abusive

If he asked for affection...I'd tell him he needed to earn it Abusive

I wouldn’t let him kiss me or touch me or have any physical contact Abusive

I made sure to remind him how I didn’t “need him.” I told him he was lucky to have me at all, and that he should be grateful Abusive

I went through his phone. I found nothing, but I made a huge scene anyway, accusing him of cheating Abusive

I kept bringing it up in every argument, telling him that he’d already proven how much of a “failure” he was and that he needed to change Abusive.

That doesn't mean he isn't too. You're right to get divorced. Block his family and him.

Then get some therapy before you move on to another relationship because your behaviour is not ok.

Hankunamatata · 10/11/2024 21:25

Weird ass reverse?

You both need therapy!!

IcyLilacZebra · 10/11/2024 21:26

You both sound as bad as each other tbh
