I’ve been thinking for a while that somethings going on with my daughter and I and I’ve been trying to find ways to repair our “broken bond”.

But I have just spent a whole week with other kids her age and I realised, I think it’s just this age group that I don’t like very much! I mentioned to my friend and she said she can’t stand the toddler age where’s as that’s my fave one.

Was just wondering if anyone else had preferences like this!

I find 7-9 year olds particularly irritating

Bushmillsbabe · 10/11/2024 20:30

Loved 3/4 to about 6/7 - able to have a conversation but still very much a child, able to be silly and have fun and just sheer joy in magical things like movies and santa etc. Mostly do what they are asked without too much fuss.
Oldest has just turned 9 and the past 6-9 months have been really challenging, she has some good days and some really challenging ones where even the simplest question such as 'what would you like for lunch' leads to a total meltdown.

Gothamcity · 10/11/2024 20:24

I despised the baby stage until about 9 months, mine were both whingey, constant criers though so it was really mentally and physically taxing, constantly trying to soothe them and keep them happy, and then walking on egg shells to not upset the rare happy/content moments (and I mean rare!). Absolutely loved the toddler/preschool age, they were hilarious and such fun, loved seeing their personalities emerge and how excited and intrigued they were by the smallest thing. Miss having them both home with me most of the time, and the freedom to go on spontaneous days out during the week. Mine are now 8 and 10, and are delightful most of the time. The occasional bit of attitude and high emotions from the older one, but nothing too drastic. Think they're saving it up for the teenage years to be honest, as so far, since the youngest has been over a year old, I haven't found parenting at all hard, they're such easy going kids... And I never would have thought that thinking back to how hard work and high needs they both were as babies! Some of dds 10 year old friends are hard work though, and have been for a couple of years. Seem to be constantly looking for drama, or reasons to moan and strop, so I do think it's quite common for hormones to set in at this age (especially with girls) hoping for a good year or so before it fully hits us 😅

TwoTallTerrors · 10/11/2024 20:23

Mine are just teens,.give me any other stage, they are far noisier, messier, ruder, more expensive and destructive at the age they are now. I used to think I was a good parent but now they drive me up the wall as everything seems over the top exaggerated which winds me up.

TomatoAuberginePotatoTurnip · 10/11/2024 20:14

I agree with you OP on 8-10 years old. They are right know-it-alls at that age.
Luckily secondary school puts them back in their place 😄

Poffy · 10/11/2024 20:11

0 to 1 by far the worst.
1 to 4 hard work but rewarding.
5 to 28 a complete joy.
Also I dislike all other children than my own which is why I nearly didn't have any.

squashyhat · 10/11/2024 17:50

0-18. Which is why I'm childfree.

Agree with this. Except I'm regrettably not childfree...

NeedthatFridayfeeling · 10/11/2024 20:07

Mines 8 and so far loved all stages, she's been fab, appreciate we may have been lucky! And maybe just having 1 has helped. Hoping it stays this easy 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻

KittenOnTheTable · 10/11/2024 20:04

12-14 nearly 15 was peak for my dd. She's been more than a handful. Just like her friends they just seem at that very awkward age

Anisty · 10/11/2024 19:30

14 to 20 months ish was my least favourite age. Once their comprehension improved, it was all good again but that stage where they are into everything but can't do a little conversation isn't good.

My very favourite age is newborn to 6 weeks though. Pity you can't stop time for a bit when they are brand new!

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 10/11/2024 19:29

Dislike? No. Find tricky? Yes - age 13/14. Both in my own dc and the ones I teach! Lots of them become a bit selfish and difficult.

JackGrealishsCalves · 10/11/2024 19:27

Year 6 (age 11) was the worst for me with ds, a few people I know had similar experience.
Year 8 was tricky too but I think that was more down to friendship problems

Andnowshesatoddler · 10/11/2024 19:24

Thank you for this post, it's somewhat comforting seeing other parents finding/found the same age difficult comforting for me.
My daughter is almost 2.5 she is firmly in the "why" and screaming stage. I have found the last couple of months so difficult and to be honest have been my least favourite.

ItsReallyOnlyMe · 10/11/2024 19:22

Children should be born at 4.

I liked every stage apart from the newborn and toddler bit !

I loved having teens!

SillySeal · 10/11/2024 19:22

Around 2.5 to 3.5 I find I have less patience for.
I love the baby stage! I've also found teen years ok too so far -oldest is 17.

verabarbleen · 10/11/2024 19:21

Age 3 mine are 3 and 5 right now and going through it with the 3 year old right now and went through it with my 5 year old. Can't speak for the future but all my older nieces and nephews and friends kids also wound me up when they were 3!! 😂

SashMontgomery · 10/11/2024 17:13

Just realized I didn’t put daughters age! She’s 10. Felt this way since about age 8.

I'm definitely finding age 8+ hard with my daughter - the belligerence, cheek, back track etc hard. It's seems like an awkward age where they are growing out of young kid stuff but they haven't found their new place yet. She swings wildly from acting pretty mature and cool to asking for toys for Christmas which I would consider are more age 5-6 appropriate, and the mood swings and general drama has been a surprise 😳

I also have twins - LOVED baby stage although didn't sleep more than 2 hours at a time for years - just coming through the threenager years which has been brutal but I would say 0-3 is my favourite age group

Jessie1259 · 10/11/2024 18:59

DS is an adult now. 0-1 was the worst by a thousand miles.

I have two adult and a 13 year old DS and this was true of all of them.

35965a · 10/11/2024 19:19

Toddler years. It’s like they’re actively trying to harm themselves every second of the day and it’s exhausting at that age. Pure mental tiredness.

FloralGums · 10/11/2024 19:18

Not an age but a type.
I don’t like the type of kids who think they are the only one that matters and have no concept of other people’s feelings and no consideration for others.

Mylittlebobble · 10/11/2024 19:16

I have two children. Oldest has got easier and easier as time's gone on. He's early teens now and really good fun. The youngest is 7 and she has me scratching my head all the time. I have to work hard to stay regulated and to think about what her behaviour is communicating. Mind you, I'm perimenopausal so there's that in the mix too. Never a dull day! 😆

Yellow2024 · 10/11/2024 19:14

I would say 8ish to 10ish. Probably year 4 until half way into year 7.

Oldest is 13 and really enjoyable.

Loved the toddler years.

RuthW · 10/11/2024 19:10

I disliked under 6. The older she got, the better.

HippeePrincess · 10/11/2024 19:07

Toddlers and tween girls are awful, though I expect she’s going to be a hard teen too. Teen age boy is fine currently. 1.5-3 is horrid and so is 8-12. Actually not sure why we do it.

TeenLifeMum · 10/11/2024 19:04

Newborns are a bit dull. I’ve enjoyed every stage but currently really loving teens. 13yo dtds and 16 yo dd
