Why has Welby not resigned?

Along with the at least 6 bishops and providence knows however many others within the organisation who were aware of this evil man’s conduct.

Listening to him tie himself in knots, trying to distance/excuse his inaction is despicable.

So have I.

Ilovemyshoes · 11/11/2024 16:22

I’ve signed it too

Horses7 · 11/11/2024 16:06

Signed the petition

ladymalfoy45 · 11/11/2024 14:21

It's not just him. Others knew and also did nothing. I heard that as many as twenty senior church figures knew what was happening/ happened.

There is on change.org. I put a link to it in the Petitions and Activism topic (Call for Justin Welby to resign. | Mumsnet)

Excellent idea, signed. I'm sure he won't listen but at least he'll know people are disgusted by him.

The head of Church would have to have more spine....

There’s only one Head of the church- the Lord Jesus Christ. All the rest, including the king are subordinate to Him.

Horses7 · 11/11/2024 14:06

Beggars belief he’s not gone! Is there a petition?

Artistbythewater · 11/11/2024 13:56

I am also wondering why the police are not investigating HIM and everyone else that knew 30 years ago!! How many children have been abused since then? It’s outrageous.

Artistbythewater · 11/11/2024 13:53

Despicable and beginning to make me feel seriously angry at this point.

He took a very long sabbatical as well. I despise this behaviour and the revolting lack of decency or backbone.

Genevieva · 11/11/2024 13:53

Because he enjoys living in a palace and having a place in the House of Lords, both of which he will lose. My guess anyway, as he seems to enjoy the public prestige of his role and likes intervening in politics.

MinaHarker1897 · 11/11/2024 13:51

I give you ... Justin Welby's job description. He is failing at it.

How can the Church help to give a voice to people who are easily ignored by the powerful? How can Christians and others make a difference in their local communities and to the society we live in as a nation? What's most important in life and what does Christianity have to say about the big questions we all face?
The Archbishop of Canterbury's ministry in the church, his role in parliament as one of the Lords Spiritual, and his place in public life, give him opportunities to see what others are doing in answer to these questions and to take part in public debate about the issues behind them. That might be through visiting schools and talking to the pupils and staff, through speaking in the House of Lords or writing for the press,* *or by spending time with clients, volunteers and staff at projects working to make a difference to the lives of those in need around the country.

ruffler45 · 11/11/2024 13:51

Does the/any church/religion have a reputation anymore, there seems to be scandals with all of them at one time or another

Meadowfinch · 11/11/2024 13:41

I have no idea. I listened to his 'explanation' and couldn't see any mitigating factors. He knew the man was an active CSA predator and he did nothing.

He should resign immediately and spend the rest of his life apologising to the victims he had the chance to protect but didn't.

I'm was baptised and confirmed into the Church of England as a child, yet I wouldn't let any of them within a country mile of my child, if this is their view of CSR.

Until Welby resigns they are all, without exception, as bad as each other. Disgusting !!

You can put the petition link on the Petitions and Activism board.
The reason for this MN rule is to prevent bots spamming boards with links, I think.

Afaik it's ok to then link to that thread from others.

Thanks for that tip. I appreciate that :-)

MrsSkylerWhite · 11/11/2024 13:30

Thank you, HisNibs.

There is a petition on change.org calling for his resignation. I would post a link but that's not allowed as I've just discovered. Personally, I'd like to see him prosecuted too.

He doesn't seem like a very good person and he has no place in a position of moral authority.

He will hopefully eventually be forced to resign, but I don't believe he will ever have a genuine 'change of heart'.

He’s an utterly vile man who believes he is untouchable. Hopefully the King, as head of the Church, will sack him.

Why would Charles sack him even if it was possible?

Last time he was involved with clerical paedophilia - that we know about, that is - he did his very best to support the offender, and when officially criticised claimed he didn't understand the implications of the conviction

BlastedPimples · 10/11/2024 14:50

Why on earth I meant

BlastedPimples · 10/11/2024 14:50

Eh on earth would he resign? Nobody is going to make him. So he's not going to. Another entitled Etonian knobber.

More awful people simply getting away with their true awfulness.

Eyesthelimit · 10/11/2024 14:46

A certain northern Irish MPs wife is currently facing charges of aiding and abetting CSA. I would think these clergy could and should face similar if there is enough evidence ?
