16 month old assaulted should i have expected more support from the police?

Absc · 10/11/2024 00:56

Feeling shaken up tonight a drunk person hit me, pushed my 3 year old over and my 16 month old who was in his pram she pushed the pram over i couldn't do anything to stop it happening. He did hit his head on the floor.

We have spent four hours at hospital who have said they don't think he has any significant head injuries. He has pre existing conditions that mean any head injuries have to be seen in a&e as he has false signs already for a bleed in brain etc so signs to look for concern are already there on him. At five months old he had an emergency mri with drs thinking he had a bleed on the brain.

This was at a family event. The attack was by a completely unknown person who doesn't live in the village. It took the police 33 minutes to attend. The dispatcher said they were coming from the local station 4 minutes away. By this point the woman had now disappeared. She had made further threats of harm - she had told people apparently we were pushing in and that's why she turned around and hit me then went for my children. We were in fact trying to find my son's friend who had walked off and with 400 people there it was difficult to see. The organisers were in the main area where we were heading to ask for assistance.

I don't know if i'm in the wrong but i feel very let down by the police not attending until too late, they said that they would have no chance of trying to find the person now and would only look if someone had significant injury. To me this is clearly a very volatile person and this happened to us they could well do this again. They said they would call in a few days time to check the child has no further injuries. My other child was literally telling the police that he had been pushed over by a lady and that she had chucked a drink at him. Police response we don't need or want to speak to the child.

Or is this now what society has turned into and is it normal to go to family events and have aggressive people / drunk people at 6pm in the evening.

I really cannot understand why you’re doubting the OPs post at all. She’s quite clearly had an absolutely awful thing happen to her and her children and you’re picking holes in the story. Even if they’d intervened, what would they have done? restrained her for 30 mins until the police arrived?

Yes exactly that! Some drunken crackhead couldn't be too difficult to hold down surely?

FedupMum2024 · 10/11/2024 02:03

If anybody, man or woman, drunk or sober, had deliberately pushed my pram over with my 16 month old baby in it there would have been no need for police attendance,
I would have personally dealt with them myself in the most illegal way possible.
this would have been instinctive I am afraid.
I just cannot believe that you and all the other onlookers allowed this vicious evil animal to just walk away from this.

Really? You would escalate the violence with some unknown person who could be seriously unhinged and carrying a weapon. You would cause your children further trauma by continuing the violence rather than get them to safety?

funinthesun19 · 10/11/2024 19:56

Maybe some people don’t want their trauma “debated” about. I’ve had my fair share of healthy debates over the years, but this ain’t the thread. I know what my limits are. I fully believe OP’s version so no I don’t feel the need to question her about it. And it seems plenty more people feel the same way.

And that's great that you feel that way.
Enjoy your evening

It's not life or death for heavens sake.,

For my son any injury to his head is a straight to hospital mri based response. He also has other conditions which means he's at risk more than a normal baby that age. I've already once had to see him be resuscitate in his earlier days.

So for him this was actually the potential to be that and i was too scared to be attacked and couldn't get out without police and ambulance service also wouldn't have been able to get through.

Are you new to the Internet?
Have you never entered into a healthy debate or discussion with different points of view? Have you never questioned anything you've read? Have you never come across a situation where there may be more than one side to a story? It's just so naive.

The OP has had plenty of sympathy and practical advice on here (by myself included, I actually recommended she complain about the Police response time). But I stand by my statement that I think there may be more to this story based on what I've read.... you don't agree with me and that's OK!

I read the entire thread with an open mind and saw a lot of assumptions and really quite nasty name calling aimed at some anonymous female who isn't here to give her own side of the story. That's a pack mentality right there and it doesn't sit right with me.

JLou08 · 10/11/2024 19:54

So sorry this happened to you. You need to put in a complaint. She could kill the next baby she pushes over. I'm so shocked the police aren't taking this seriously. The response time is awful too, a lot could have happened in that time, however, if they physically weren't able to get there sooner that can't be helped by the officers but the response afterwards is something that can be controlled.

Op hope you are feeling a bit better.

Not the issue being discussed I'm amazed that the village has a police station especially one manned on Saturday night?

It's in the next town but very close and yes it's one of the few still open 7 days a week with officers in. Unlike the city 40 mins away with no station. There's been talk over years of it closing but never has.

You absolutely haven’t had your posts deleted for simply saying there’s more than meets the eye. They’re deleted for breaking talk guidelines based on respect for other posters and their points of view.

Ah, so was it you who reported them?

That was actually exactly what I said.....plus a bit about the UK allowing people to be innocent till proven guilty (imagine!) and a couple of mentions of their normally being 3 sides to every story (the horror!)...... no personal attack on anyone, no disrespect to any other posters.... I've never said I don't believe the OP or think she is lying. I've simply said 'I don't know either way'

But it's very clear it only works one way this 'respect for other posters and their points of view"?
Did you respect my point of view? Did you show respect to me as another poster? No, you did not, at all.

Maybe I should start reporting a load of posts too? Except that I wouldn't, ever, because I actually value freedom of speech, healthy discussion and have no problem with people expressing a different view to my own.

The lynch mob wanting to smash the skull of an unknown person who may or may not have done something terrible but who's already been tried and convicted by MN posters...well that's a whole other ballgame isn't it.

Absc · 10/11/2024 19:45

Thank you for the people who have been supportive my eldest hasn't mentioned anything when i picked him up after work today.

The organisers of the event and the local council have been emailed by my mum today as there should never have been so many people in a small area that's not meant for this. My village is a mixture of young families and people who have lived there for 40 plus years. I was born in the village and nearly everyone knows everyone houses don't come up for sale often maybe once every 5/6 years. The people who were there were not locals only knew one person who witnessed it and they had four children under 8. It was literally seconds that's how quick it happened. Still to an extent in shock but had to focus on work.

Interesting viewpoint but no, I don't agree that 'pack mentality' is the basis on which MN operates.

To me, you can participate in a discussion on an online forum without blindly believing and agreeing with everything you read.

Isn't the very nature of discussion about inviting healthy debate and asking questions? You said yourself, the poster invites advice and comment on a situation. My comment is that there may be more to this story - and I've had my replies reported for saying that.

You don't have to agree but surely we shouldn't be deleting viewpoints that don't align directly with our own?

Carouselfish · 10/11/2024 18:11

I would post or get a friend to post on the events social media appealing for photos of the woman. I can't believe no-one standing by thought to take one.
And I would ALWAYS intervene if I saw a woman or child being attacked. And have done.

funinthesun19 · 10/11/2024 15:15

I also didn't say it was a witch hunt, what I said was this thread is an example of 'pack mentality' on MN which reminded me of the witch trials in the middle ages where one person could say anything they wanted to and it would automatically be believed.

What exactly do you want people to say? Would it have been better if everyone said something along the lines of “Nah, bet there’s more to this.” etc?
If so then it might as well be the case on every thread where someone posts about something horrible that has happened to them. What a nasty unsupportive place this site would be.

But in those early days way before he was convicted, what if people said they don’t believe your version of events?

And you say nobody needs to prove anything to you, but clearly they do in order for you to believe them. And instead of just leaving the thread, you’ve called this thread a witch hunt because other people believe OP and they’re upset and angry for her. You’ve pulled down her version events and then you’ve also made up a new scenario where the two women had a scrap and sent the two children flying.
As I said, I’m sure this attitude is very helpful towards OP and other victims.

Actually you've just completely made up an entire series of events right there, twisting everything that has actually been said which is exactly why everyone should be very careful believing anything they read on the Internet. It's very easy to do and it's dangerous.

At no point have I said I don't believe the OP. What I actually said is there could be more to this story and, when pressed, i said i don't just blindly believe everything written by strangers on the Internet without question.

I also didn't say it was a witch hunt, what I said was this thread is an example of 'pack mentality' on MN which reminded me of the witch trials in the middle ages where one person could say anything they wanted to and it would automatically be believed.

I haven't pulled down the OP's version of events at all. I've been quite clear that I wasn't there and have no idea what did or didn't happen. I don't know if the OP is the victim or not and neither do you. You might not think that attitude is helpful (irl) but neither is yours.

I also haven't made up a new version of events. I tried to offer a different potential scenario to give some perspective to someone extremely closed minded claiming to know all the 'facts' about exactly what happened despite not actually having a clue.

What I have been is pretty respectful in my responses to you and our different way of thinking however I haven't experienced the same in return.

@funinthesun19

Yeah, mine was DV as well, we all have our own stories to tell..... none of which you can tell behind a few words typed on a keyboard or phone.

Mine went to court and ended in conviction but not just purely on my say so, nor would I ever expect it to. No, they needed evidence: witnesses, forensics, injuries which corroborated my account, previous disclosures etc.

It's lovely that you automatically believe the best in everyone and take everything you read at face value without question. We're not all the same though, and that's OK too, we're all shaped by our own experiences. That doesn't make you a bad person and it doesn't make me a bad person, we just think differently.

And just for the record, nobody needs to prove anything to ME, I'm not the Police or the courts. I don't know these people involved or anything about what happened. I wasn't there.

Yes I can be pretty cynical to be honest, that's probably a fair way to describe me but I neither believe nor disbelieve unless I know something for certain myself.

I've been the victim of a serious violent assault myself where I was left with a bleed on the brain so i do actually have a lot of empathy for victims. I've also seen first hand damaging false reports which have later been categorically proven not to be true though. I don't immediately believe everything I hear, especially on the Internet.

Edited

Yes you’ve made it clear that you don’t like to believe victims until YOU have got concrete proof. I’m sure that attitude is very helpful for victims to hear.
I was a victim of domestic violence, but I guess because you wasn’t there it didn’t happen the way I say it happened. 🤦🏼‍♀️

I’m a police officer. On my last two shifts I’ve spent 10+ hours in A&E with two different people in mental health crisis. When my shift ended I was still stuck there until someone on the next shift could relieve me. They then spent many more hours there. I did not get a break, or food, in what ended up being 14+ hour shifts. During that time, many many jobs came in that there were no officers available to attend.

I am laughing at the PP who said we’d rather do paperwork, it’s laughable that I’d even find the time. I would love the opportunity to catch up, to investigate, to provide care or even have much contact with the victims of the crimes on my workload. Incoming emergency calls take priority, although senior officers are quick to criticise when the things they measure (frequency of victim contacts and progress with investigations) are dipping.

At the moment, around 20% of officers at my station are off sick, the large proportion with stress. We also have “vacancies” in terms of how many staff we should have for minimum cover, but there’s no money for recruitment or training because we were awarded a pay rise but no funding.

We are provided with vehicles and equipment that aren’t fit for purpose, because they are cheap.

No one wants to fund the police because it’s not “nice” and doesn’t have the same ring to it as schools/NHS.

I love my job, but to be honest I’m reaching breaking point in terms of stress. And all we ever get is criticism.

The vast majority of people with even an ounce of sense understand all of what you have written.

Thank you for everything you and your colleagues do.

I’m so sorry this happened to you OP.

Something similar but different happened to me. Fwiw my advice is

  • contact your health visitor for a chat about the effect on the children, I did this and it was very helpful. My situation involved a pre schooler and they found it helped to draw pictures etc to help process their experience and fears.
  • don’t expect the police to have the slightest emotional intelligence whatsoever, you are sadly just something on their to do list
  • ask on Facebook etc for witnesses, I didn’t do this and I wish I had done

take it steady and be kind to yourself. You are possibly used to being invincible due to your work and it’s a horrible shock when something like this happens in your personal life and makes you realise you are a bit vulnerable after all.

I'm sorry something happened to you i have friends who are trained in trauma with children and i am also trained so i know the practice side it's just different to when it's your own child

400 people, no one intervened or took videos or photos .... this would be all over social media...

I have no idea if it's on social media as i am not on it as i would never want clients to find me etc or have personal details.

My friend saw the post on social media. The police were trying to find this info out to see if there were any taken. They have some witnesses who have given details - all similar to me families with young children

This happened to my mum when she was pushing my daughter in her buggy. A strange woman pulled her down to the pavement by her hair and the buggy tipped over. Passerby called the police. The woman assaulted an officer while being arrested.

They successfully prosecuted her for assaulting the police officer and did not even take a statement from my mum.
