Posted here as it gets the most traffic. This is by far the worst news I’ve heard all year. Imagine at the age you were meant to start secondary school instead being forced to marry and have sex with an older man. Completely disgusting!!!

Iraq to lower the ‘age of consent’ for girls to nine

A new law proposed by ultra conservative Shia Muslim parties seeks to strip women and girls of their rights

Women do escape, it's not just the men. Men are more likely to be funded though by their families etc with the idea that the women and children follow.

Oh really? What percentage of women are you talking about?

OonaStubbs · 09/11/2024 10:20

This is one of the reasons I will always support Israel against Palestine. Women in Israel have far more rights and freedom than in any other country in the Middle-East. The bigger Israel gets, the freer the region becomes overall.

And then people wonder why there's an increase in immigration.

Lol, this would make sense if the immigrants were women. But they're not. Just guys fleeing and leaving them behind to suffer God knows what horrors.

Timothy, 2:12 ‘But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence’. In addition, in Timothy 2:12, St Paul said, ‘I do not permit a woman to teach or to exercise authority over a man; rather, she is to remain quiet’. When laying out the ground rules for worship services in 1 Corinthians 14: 33-35, Paul revisits this by placing clear restrictions on participation by women.

Ah Saint Paul (Saul), the self-proclaimed "apostle" who never met Jesus (apart from his own account of a vision), argues with Saint Peter and was reprimanded by others of the 12 original Apostles.

And of course that was according to Timothy (a book which is considered by many scholars as NOT being written by Paul), and is contradicted by various other statements in the New Testament including Junia ("prominent among the apostles"), and Phoebe being praised as a Deaconess.

But you pick & choose the bits that prove your point (sort of like those Muslims who treat women badly).

CranfordScones · 09/11/2024 10:16

Presumably there'll be a noisy clamour of strong opposition from our MPs. Or are they too afraid to speak up? And why would that be? Why is freedom to speak out being eroded for certain groups, notably MPs who would otherwise self-describe as being liberal and progressive - but who suffer from convenient moral cowardice when young girls are being raped?

That country gets worse every passing day.

And then people wonder why there's an increase in immigration.

I wish there was something that could be done.

I was surprised to read about this law so Googled to find out more but couldn’t find anything. Can you share a link?

I have asked that my previous post be removed as it was incorrect. The use of rape is sanctioned by Mr Netanyahu and many senior officials but is not enshrined in law.

Two months old it maybe but did you know about it till today? I didn't.

I fail to see how it's a less awful proposition for having been announced 8 weeks ago rather than today.

And great that, because it's 8 weeks old and others did spot it, there's already opposition.

The conservative politicians trying to get it through previously tried in, I think, 2014 and 2017. Both attempts were blocked. Hopefully, with enough support, this can be blocked too, but it's looking like it'll be harder to prevent it this time.

Because Mohammed did it. He married a six-year-old and consummated with her when she was nine.

now unless you’re going to say their prophet was wrong, then how are you possibly going to stop such laws being enacted around the Muslim world?

What's that got to do with child marriage in the USA

BabyEl · 09/11/2024 10:10

lasagnelle · 09/11/2024 10:06

What possible reason can there be for marrying a 10 year old to be legal? That's shocking

Do we have Americans moving to this country and treating 10 year old girls in this way? I doubt it. However, we have a lot of issues with Muslim men and sexual abuse of girls in the UK - see Rochdale.

Well, child marriage is legal in quite a few states in the US. 4 states even have no minimum age limit, if certain criteria such as parental consent are met. Sometimes, simply the child being pregnant is sufficient for a court to agree to marriage. Plus in some states, minors cannot legally divorce or leave their spouses and some domestic violence shelters refuse to accept minors.

Child sexual abuse and child marriage are global rights issues. Perverts are going to be perverts, regardless of the colour of their skin or the faith they claim to practise.

I'm not a Muslim and I found your statement very racist, and not at all "innocent".

As @MissyB1 said, not all Muslims are the same. Similar to Christians really, there are various sects and divisions who interpret the "laws" very differently; they pick & choose the interpretations and writings that suit them. An example of this is that nobody as yet has managed to show me the place in the Bible that says women can never be priests, yet many Christian sects still ban women from this.

1 Timothy 2:12 I do not permit a woman to teach or exercise authority over a man.

And in several places in that letter, and more throughout the bible, qualifications for elders include them being a man.

The word "priest" isn't used here because priests are Old Testament mediators between people and God, and therefore no longer required after Jesus' atonement. Churches are meant to be led by elders.

It's absolutely sick. It looks like it's still in the proposal stage though.
Can't the UN do anything about this?

No, sorry. Too busy writing another resolution against Israel.

TheLittleOldWomanWhoShrinks · 09/11/2024 10:08

I know Germany very well and no, the age of consent can't be lowered to 6. I'm wondering (though I haven't checked the Wikipedia link) whether it's managed to conflate it, somehow, with the gender self-ID law that requires a child aged 6 (or 5?) and above to consent if their parents want to change their legal gender.

The age of consent in Germany is 14. (Too young IMO. It is, at least, illegal for teachers. coaches, youth workers etc to have relationships with under-18s they are working with).

It's horrific but it's hardly surprising or the "worst thing I've read all year" or something which is what the OP said. I'm suspicious of the motives of people bringing it up now.

Yes, for me it is the most disturbing news of the year too. Abortion issues in the US have mentioned everywhere before 2022.

I find your comment very odd.

@wrongthinker Here's a report on the extent child marriage in that well known Muslim country, the USA.

Hunglikeapolevaulter · 09/11/2024 10:05

70% of those killed in Gaza by Israel are women and children. Better off dead yeah?

Oh look! A Jewish squirrel!

Old news and there is opposition to it:

I had initially hoped that people might be interested in trying to get involved in helping the organisations challenging this bill.

Child marriage existed in the past and still exists today. The reality is that there is no need for it in the modern world. The men in the modern world who want to marry children, want that for one reason, really. Because they want to exercise a deviant and abusive interest in children and not get in trouble for it.

Rather than using this as another "Islam bad, everyone else good", when this is a global, cross-cultural issue, please consider supporting one of the multiple organisations acting to prevent this and other similar assaults on the rights of women and girls.

This specific instance is not cross cultural.

Hopefully all the right thinking Muslims will be standing up against this. If not, why not?

EarthSight · 09/11/2024 09:59

MissyB1 · 09/11/2024 07:56

Oi! Don't bring your racism into this! Plenty of Muslims do not support Sharia law anyway. Do not lump all Muslims together and judge them on what Iraq are doing, you make yourself sound like a racist idiot.

Nope. You're not allowed to silence other people by saying the word RACISM every time you don't like someone's opinion. Manipulative bullshit.

itsjustbiology · 09/11/2024 09:58

I think this is just awful in the 21st century anywhere. There are many decent people of the muslim faith I guess who would be better placed than us to voice their distaste. They should be the driver for the change that is so desperately needed to protect their children.
