i am going on a once in a lifetime holiday to a fabulous beachy and instagrammable worthy location and feeling horrible about my size 20 body with protruding a$$ and treble chins. i want to try this one meal a day thing for some instant results but bestie says it won't work for some one like me - mid 40s, hypothyroidism, binge issues in the past, and can actually make me sick. I don't want to be sick right before my bucket list vacation! Should I listen to her?

i don't plan to do low carb or anything, just eat one filling and balanced plate of my fav stuff, once a day. right now i'm at 85 kilos. I want my weight to be at least in the seventies when I leave for my xmas vacay. i have seen so many inspiring progress pics online about the OMAD lifestyle it's really giving me hope. But most of these are from men, so I don't know if it really works for perimenopausal women! Aibu to even consider this with my current health profile?

Another vote for Mounjaro
If you find its suitable, get onto it ASAP

Gets rid of all the craving, hunger, any binging- all just give!

And then I'll eat my hat if you haven't met your goal by the time the holiday comes round

(Or I would eat it, if my Mounjaro-depleted appetite allowed me lol)

@captainmarvella , when I was well into my 50’s I lost weight very well (over 50Lbs) on a fasting diet. 3 x 42 hrs fasts per week. I would suggest you read Jason Fung’s book. OMAD is a form of fasting which has lots of positive evidence. Good luck!

As OP has a history of binge eating she should seek advice from an HCP. Fasting is often contraindicated in these circumstances.

//I also bought a few new skincare bits (including some decent fake tan) to pamper myself and a few dresses and swimsuits that actually flatter my current size, and booked a facial and my nails before I go away. My goal now is just feeling as good as possible and laying the groundwork for decent habits that I can continue for long term results and not ruining a once in a lifetime holiday by worrying about my weight.//

sane advice, tx! i will get a cut and color too, along with that facial and pedicure... i will also have to be mindful not to drive myself crazy by constantly worrying about my weight until its time to board the flight. i think i was feeling more miserable abt the fact that i have let myself go and suddenly this 'trip of a lifetime' is happening, i wish i had known that it would happen 6 months back, i'd have had more time 😤

tbh i'd feel better if i can "do something about it" instead of just feeling sad and guilty - hence my signing up with the pool and gym and trying OMAD, at least then I can say I have done my best even if i don't manage to lose all 6 kilos. all the best with your goal too, inbox me if you want to have an accountability buddy

Edited

If it makes you feel better, mine was booked a year ago and I still didn’t do anything until now 🤦🏼‍♀️ I’m just focusing on being healthy and happy and hopefully some weight will come off with that, but fully agree with the annoyances about letting it get this far in the first place! I know for a fact with Christmas coming up I won’t stick to anything extreme so just trying to be more mindful!

I’m in the same boat - 6 weeks to lose 6kg for a holiday. I started last week and lost 0.5kg so I quickly realised it wasn’t going to happen. Instead what I’ve done is focus on eating healthy, nutritious food, up my water intake and just do movement I like without thinking about calories. Even after a week I already feel so much better even if the weight loss is slow.

I also bought a few new skincare bits (including some decent fake tan) to pamper myself and a few dresses and swimsuits that actually flatter my current size, and booked a facial and my nails before I go away. My goal now is just feeling as good as possible and laying the groundwork for decent habits that I can continue for long term results and not ruining a once in a lifetime holiday by worrying about my weight.

I hope you have a lovely holiday regardless of how much weight you lose x

You don't need to see your own GP for mounjaro (glp1), you just fill the form out online and they will prescribe if eligible. They ask all about your medical conditions and won't prescribe if you have something you can't take it with. You could have the medication as early as Tuesday if you do it tonight.

I work away from the UK for now but medical access is easy and efficient in my current city. I will of course not buy the drug without prescription, I will take it only if my GP confirms it as safe for me.

As you've had an eating disorder in the past I think you're mad to consider OMAD - it's too drastic and hard to stick to.

Low-carb would be an easier way to lose 6kg, IMO.

strangely enough i find low carb toughest and IF quite easy. probably coz i drink a lot of water it keeps me full so it's relatively easier for me to delay, rather than deny. my main 'requirement' is i should not feel deprived, otherwise it's all down hill.

OP posts:
Stressfordays · 10/11/2024 18:56

Oh and you 100% will not get it prescribed on the NHS unfortunately. It's not available in all areas and there are a lot of hoops you have to jump through first.

Absolutely do not join a gym or do anything other than walking as exercise. You need to concentrate on maintaining the diet and not overeating. It will already be difficult enough without adding in a sore body and (if you even managed to do enough exercise to burn calories) extra hunger pangs.
Losing weight is all about the diet. It’s so much easier not to eat a bar of chocolate rather than eat it and then try and burn those calories off.
Worry about exercise once you’ve conquered the dirt.

the gym is mainly for the treadmill and PT-resistance training access, the (non UK) city i live in is very pedestrian unfriendly! i have also signed up for a membership at the local pool so my plan is to alternate between the pool and the gym. both are close to my workplace, no excuse for avoiding them 😒

So I'm a personal trainer, who lost 10stone about 8years ago and has mostly kept it off.

Ok so if I were you, and I have been plus a lot more weight, I would aim for 1lb/week weight-loss, which is a 500Calorie a day deficit.

Prioritise protein in your meals, if you eat meat then that would be your meats, if you're vegetarian (like me) then beans, pulses, tofu and meat substitutes.

Meal prep as much as possible, batch cook and freeze meals that you've calorie counted. I have a freezer full of home made curries, stews, home made pasta sauces and cottage pie.

Create a plan for a weeks meals, and do your best to stick to it. Don't buy the foods that you'll binge on, easier said than done when you have children, I know.

If you like to eat a lot of food then it's still possible to volume eat. I make huge bowls of salad, using things like rice and beans, so big that I can't eat them in one sitting, but they have less than 500 Calories for the whole bowl.

Activity wise, the recommended minimum is 150minutes of intentional, moderate exercise or 75minutes intense exercise a week, spread over 5 days. This doesn't need to be all in one go, you could go for a brisk 15 minute walk in the morning and another in the evening. And intensity is relative, what would be a brisk walk for you might seem like a stroll for someone else, you just want to get your heart rate up.

I would also recommend incorporating some sort of resistance training, this can be bodyweight or with actual weights. There are lots of great videos and workouts available on the Internet. Recommended minimum is 30min twice a week. Resistance training will not only help you look better as the weight comes off, but will also help reduce the risk of osteoporosis.

No matter what with the exercise, find something you enjoy, it's then more likely you'll stick with it.

Finally, don't focus too much on the number on the scale. I'm 78kg, 4'11" and a size 10-12. BMi has me as obese, but in reality I lift heavy weights and have a much higher than average muscle mass. I'm also a marathon runner, not a fast marathon runner, but a marathon runner none the less.

this is v encouraging, thanks. i will enquire abt this at the gym tomorrow. i have a bad back so i'm more comfortable lifting with a personal trainer than on my own. personal training is expensive but monthly enrollment is possible in the gym so i am willing to spend on hiring a PT for a month if it's going to educate me on correct posture, and I can do it on my own later, after I come back from the holiday.

@SpidersAreShitheads

I’m autistic and have ADHD which is relevant because I often forget to eat until I realise that suddenly I haven’t eaten all day and need to eat right away! 😂🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️ So that means having foods that I can always just grab. Snacking on cheese in a hunger emergency has been a life saver!
Same goes for evening meals - I need an easy go-to for tricky days (DP is long-term sick and I have two autistic DC with high needs so I’m often very time-poor). The key really really is making sure there’s always a plan./////

This is fantastic tysm! I am neurodivergent too and it's the same for me - if there is nothing healthy that I can grab #immediately# when II get hungry, then i end up eating all sorts of crap - mostly pizza or pasta. So the key is to always have a plan, okay got it. I will stock up on healthy and preferably low-carb options. I love rice cakes too, especially with some grilled fish and fresh guac.

I also forgot to add in my OP that due to escalating intolerances I cannot have animal dairy, eggs or most nuts. So yummy cheese is no longer an option. I don't really get vegan cheese or yogurt where I live, I am from a carb heavy culture/country, so it's an ongoing struggle, trying to meal plan and fit macros in it. It's also one of a reason why I want to go for OMAD.

This is something I know about. You can easily lose 2llbs a week, either ketogenic or carnivore. Stay away from carbohydrates. That's what's making everybody fat. I did it myself. I went full carnivore the only thing I ate apart from meat was eggs. After 2 weeks I felt great haven't felt like that since I was 20 I'm 63 now I've always been around 12 stone but I went up to15 stone I wasn't happy my clothes were no longer fitting me, I went from a 32 inch waist to 34 inch waist never been that heavy in my life. Full carnivore lost 3 stone in 24 weeks never hungry satiated felt great, on YouTube look up Dr berry and Dr Chaffee they are experts . I've learnt so much from them. We have been lied to from big food companies and big pharmaceutical companies. I know I sound like a conspiracy theorist look them up and do your own research. Read the comments and see. thousands of people are ignoring their doctors going ketogenic or carnivore and reversing a whole host of illnesses. In a few months from now you will be thanking me. All the best on your bucket list endeavour!

As you probably know, crash diets can be dangerous. But, since it's only for a few weeks, go for it.

My best advice is carnivore plus veggies combined with intermittent fasting: a small chunk of the day eating with hours either side not eating but drinking. The protein and fats will make feel full so the lack of carbs/ sugars won't hurt.

Have fun on holiday then come home.

Being pre-diabetic means you should cut down on the carbs and replace those calories from fats. Natural fats. Keep the veggies and meat going but make sure that you exercise for health and toning and drop the weight slowly. This is to stop you wearing your skin like a skirt.

If nothing works, remember that the location is still stunning, you are still wonderful and that a real beach ready body belongs to seals and whales and they are amazing creatures. Just as you are. Most of all, have fun and come back refreshed. YOLO. ❤️

These are lovely inspiring words, I should remember them. I get really insecure looking at all the reels online with these young perfect women showing off their body, it feels really awful to be going to a country where most women are petite

I started intermittent fasting 16:8 last summer and I've probably lost 12kg since then. I found it really easy just to not eat breakfast and just have lunch after my youngest was up from her nap around 1-1.30pm. I drink my tea black anyway so I just have a cup of tea (or two) in the morning. I really liked that I could have what I wanted, there was no weighing or calculating, no cutting foods out, and I could still just have the same as everyone else at dinner time.

I generally eat around 1pm and stop eating around 9pm, though depending what I'm doing, I can sit down for lunch an hour or so later, and finish dinner about 7.30. So it's not strict. I don't often drink alcohol but I haven't cut it out.

It sounds like you could definitely benefit from a change of some sort if you're unhappy with your weight, so trying "just skipping breakfast" could be something worth trying, with perhaps moving to OMAD in a couple of weeks if you want.

You won't know until you try! Good luck!

thank you, i wake up at 5am and am out and about doing chores so i need to get my first meal of the day by 11am latest otherwise i can't focus on being productive, worse I start cramping, become hangry and start losing my temper. my friend has sent me links on IF 20:4 and suggested that I do this, instead of OMAD. I am considering it, as it seems most reasonable and fits my mid morning break and lunch timings at work

Dontlletmedownbruce · 10/11/2024 18:20

@captainmarvella that's the problem with weight loss isn't it, you need to lose it to be motivated to lose it! If someone could magically make you 7kg lighter you'd be bursting with energy and probably burn off twice as many calories. The first few weeks are the worst. I get so down thinking how unfair it is to be both fat and hungry at the same time and then I feel like a failure, then I do all I ever do when I feel down is eat... then I actually become the failure I thought I was. Its an awful cycle. Whatever you lose enjoy the feeling and feel proud!

MissHalloween · 10/11/2024 18:19

OP I was you last year and I ended up
loosing a whole 20kg suitcase between July and mid October.
You absolutely can lose 6kg in six weeks, you’ll be approximately a size smaller which feels great as it’s the stage where you can still where all your old clothes but they’ll be loser and you don’t need to buy everything new.
I really limited my carbs and ate lots of satisfying food such as smoked salmon and eggs for brunch and prawn salads , roast chicken meals without the potatoes or fish with tonnes of Corgettes, peppers, aubergine etc for dinner. I stocked up on some low calorie hot chocolate for when I was really craving sugar.
Good luck.

Mangolover123 · 10/11/2024 18:18

Fast800 is the only way.
The Michael Mosley regime. I lost 1 stone in 6 weeks before a big holiday.
I have carried on and I am now 1 1/2 stone down
800 calories of a keto [non carb, med diet]. The recipes are fantastic. 6 weeks of 800 calories per day.
I fast from 8pm to 12pm daily. I am 5ft 4 94kg and a size 18. But no longer a tight 18!
I think another 1 stone and i will be a comfortable size 16.
This has worked for me. You can fo up to 12 weeks on the Fast800. Then you go to a 5:2. 5 days Mediterranean diet 2 fast800.
It is doable.

i had this exact thought, since its only 6 weeks why don't i try it? coz the words 'permanent lifestyle change' is a bit intimidating, it's easier to look at it as a short term experiment... truth is, i can't give up pasta/rice/pizza which is why I wanted to give OMAD a chance. I know that I don't have to deprive myself of my fav foods on OMAD, just delay eating them. Past times when I tried to stop myself from eating my comfort foods, it didn't work at all and I ended up binging. It's a vicious circle.

Yes, you can if your limit calories (approx 1200 a day). It's not a long term fix but it'll work for you for now.

Dontlletmedownbruce · 09/11/2024 13:47

Focus on losing fat and increasing muscle tone. Focus on energy and feeling confident. If you get caught up on weight and half way through you aren't near target you will feel bad about yourself and possibly give up and that's the worst outcome. So what if you lose only 3 or 4 kg. That's 3 or 4kg less to be dragging around an airport and enough to feel your clothes loosen. Every gram is a success, be proud of any loss.

you hit it on the head, my goal is partly coz i tried to lift my packed carry on and found it heavy! im allowed a 7 kg suitcase on the flight, and my carry on suitcase on its own weighs a kilo so i was aghast when i realised that my body is carrying this excess weight 24/7. sometimes i feel so sad i have let myself go like this.
