Intended to be light hearted! Some are obvious like politics - what other things secretly make you roll your eyes when they're bought up at say, a dinner party? I hate hearing detailed descriptions of people's holidays lol. I like to hear if somewhere is nice but not a whole two week itinerary! I think my friends husband wants to tell me shut up already when I talk about pilates lol, what are yours?

Because I used to work as a legal professional, people often tell me about their deadly dull legal or admin issues…parking ticket disputes ( personally I never get parking tickets because I don’t want to deal with the aggro, and take the view that if someone gets a ticket, it’s because they parked somewhere they shouldn’t have). Please don’t reply to tell me how yours wasn’t your fault. Also insurance , internet providers , how difficult it is to get a GP appointment and how you managed to buck the system and get one. LTNs, ULEZ and traffic monologues are also unacceptable.
Give me religion or politics any day! I’m happy to hear about people’s children, or even their cats and dogs, but not their medical issues. They can tell me about their work or hobbies but not boundary disputes.

Zebracat · 08/11/2024 22:46

Oh dear. Mine is a list. Travel, especially routes taken. When people( my Dh and his brothers) talk about people from their shared childhood as if its interesting to others present that Mrs Scroggins lived by the sewage works, or was it over on the London rd?and used to be the town planner . Healthand especially surgery, no no don’t show me your scar! Worst of all though is young men in the sauna talking about their ideal woman _ mute, virginal, sexy, modest, hard worker, home bird, not jealous, not a gold digger etc etc.

I don't understand "mixed company" in the context of this thread. Surely none of these topics are objectionable among friends whom you presumably like the company of? So... if not friends why are you all spending so much time having tedious conversations with people you don't like? If it's at work and the small talk is duller than usual, just tune it out?

Just reading these sorry I always thought mixed company meant all different people! I have caused some confusion haha. I have confused myself tbh. These replies are hilarious though lol! I am guilty of so many

I’m happy with most topics but cannot stand nostalgia. Happy to talk about things in the past but not in a wistful, the best times have gone by way.

When there's a pointless debate- is it a balm cake, a roll or a muffin?? Who gives a shit!!

I had lunch with a group of about 5 every day in a previous job. There were 2 women who would constantly talk about spinning. Honestly I cannot understand how one can talk about spinning but it was constant. How was your class? Great. How was yours? They talked about levels they got to, music that was played, even the sequence.. we did 60 seconds higher and then 60 lower.. no way! We always do 30 second alternating etc etc. 3 of us would sit there like spare tools while they did this.

I now have a vision of the mixed company of gentlemen with cravats, and young ladies in crinolines with spinning wheels.

It's been a long week.

Where and when they last got pissed (adults with children, not uni students ffs).
Complaining about how useless their husband is (I just think, well, tell him then and sort it out!2 It sounds awful.)

Have I understood this correctly

you get annoyed when people ask how you are? That can't be a long conversation surely?

I get annoyed by people talking about how much they loved lockdown. I was at an event last week where someone was going on about how she's still angry at people who jogged and I initially thought she was joking.

not thrilled with politics either.

Definitely people's kids. On and on and then they get their phone out and show you 5 minute videos. Makes me want to run.

Grandchildren is worse than kids I reckon. Millions of photos and endless tales of the cute and clever things they say- to me they sound like cheeky little brats!

ConstanceM · 08/11/2024 22:22

Things you never discuss in polite company:

  1. Money: Banging on about how much money you earn - £60k + (Unless your giving it away to us - nobody gives a fxuk)
  2. Politics: If you start any conversion about immigrant invasions or how Gaza deserves Genocide. (You are a psychopath)
  3. Religion: Either how much you hate Muslims, or Catholics or Evangelicals.
  4. Bullshitting: Normally about how great, smart, cool and straight you are. Especially when people know your full of it.
If you are going to I discuss such topics do so with Social awareness, emotional intelligence.
Wendolino · 08/11/2024 22:21

Soap operas. I don't watch any but my (otherwise great company) auntie does-ooh did you see Coronation St? Me- no I don't watch any soaps (for 100th time). Her- well you know?? He's married to ?? Well he used to be married to ??, you know, you remember, he was?? in Emmerdale........

I end up agreeing to get her to stop!

LaPalmaLlama · 08/11/2024 22:18

Honestly I think most things are ok to talk about. It’s more about people reading the room and realising that other people want to move the conversation on or aren’t really interested, which is just a social skill and generally if you ask the other person some questions you’ll get some pretty clear indicators

eg you’re talking about your dog and say “ do you have any pets?”

if the person says “ no tbh I’m not a big animal lover” that’s a completely different cue to if they say “ yea I’ve got six working spaniels and four cats”

Keepingittogetherstepbystep · 08/11/2024 22:16

Reality tv, if I wanted to watch or follow it I would. I don't need a running commentary.

Projectme · 08/11/2024 22:14

When a colleague chats shit about her neighbours auntie's daughters best friend who's cat is in a cattery while said neighbours aunties daughters best friend is on holiday. Don't fucking care love.

Or best one when she says 'I had an amazing dream last night, it involved me (of course), my daughter, a skunk and taylor swift! You never guess what I did...' hang on, let me just gouge my eyes out, one moment....yawn 😴

That depends on who I'm talking to. Today I spent quite a long time talking about horror films and TV series. Yesterday I was talking to someone about the American election.

Usually people's interests, news and events.

Screamingabdabz · 08/11/2024 22:11

I’m not too fussed what the actual topic is but ffs keep it light and don’t go into long boring monologues about the minutiae. Keep it to bullet points and deliver it like the best stand up routine you can deliver.

I’m in my 50s and jeez, the amount of people that become miserable self obsessed bores with bitter grudges over nothing is unreal. It’s a dinner party - grow up, have a bloody drink and chill the fuck out.

Xtraincome · 08/11/2024 22:10

I will engage happily in pretty much any non-aggressive or upsetting conversation. Will talk about: kids, pets, (limited) holiday talk, same with school talk, politics, medicine, food, exercise, diets (dull, but i will shut it down quickly) and so forth... But I get boiling rage listening to people tell really long stories where they do what PPs have mentioned: pointless details, peoples names I don't know/care about, taking forever to tell the story and monopolising conversation.

^ This definitely stems from DM behaviour 😆

People banging on about their weight and diets.

yup this drives me potty too.
Bonus groaning if
a) it feels like they’re compliment fishing (promise that I truly don’t notice and definitely don’t care about the weight loss / gain)
b) they’re a lot less fit than you and they’re holding forth like the messiah on the ‘way’
c) they’re complaining about how little they eat / their metabolic disorder while eating thirds of pudding.

LET ME EAT MY PIE IN PEACE BRENDA
