Hi just curious what is the common age for last baby 4th or 5th?

I only know one person with five, and she had her first at 25 and fifth at 34. Not sure if that will be the last!

I know someone else who had a fourth at 42. She had three older DC who were I think 17, 19 and 20.

I am planning/hoping for a third and final baby, at 38 or 39. I had my first at 33.

So in that case would you think 40 is too late as you get less time alive?

Err - I had my second at 40. Given that my DM died at 46 I don’t tend to focus on age. It wouldn’t be good to do that. I’m already well past that and DS2 is 16. I see no reason why I won’t be like DF and hit my 80s. I know loads of families where the mum was late 30s or older when DC2 arrived. What I don’t know are loads of families with more than 3 DC!

RampantIvy · 09/11/2024 07:30

Quite a few people I know with 4 children had them at around 41 because they were whoops babies.

Good luck with having 4+ teenagers.

downwindofyou · 09/11/2024 07:27

Will you have less time alive with your dc if you have them at 40 than at 20. Well obviously. I can't understand how this is even a question.

But as people generally live longer or can still expect to have 40+ years with them. Isn't that enough? I mean time is running out for all of us but I doubt many people are lamenting that 40-50 years is not enough time to be a parent to a child.

This is such a peculiarly um... obvious thing that I'm not sure if you are being serious op or trying to create some kind of drama on here. Not sure what sort of drama or why but it's kind of a weird question. It's like asking if you need to wear a coat in cold weather. 🫤

You actually sound very young and immature. Far too young for any babies let alone 4.

HappyAsASandboy · 09/11/2024 07:21

I had my DC1 at 31 and DC4 at 41.

Online having four kids. I am tired now though - I have had an under 5 in my house for almost 15 years! And I will be doing primary school runs for 16 years in total, which is a bit mad.

Late thirties isn't too old for your first baby or your last baby.

Personally, I wouldn't want to have a baby after early 40s because I'd like them all out of the nest before I retire!

Shaz83 · 08/11/2024 20:16

Ok so it seems like it’s more common in late 30’s… I thought it wasn’t because I thought it’s too late to have more kids at that age which is wrong way of thinking and not to assume…

You thought late 30s was late to have kids???

Maybe it's regional and other demographics. Where I am in Surrey/SE London people generally don't start having dc until their early - mid 30s as they are building careers first and it takes that long to be able to contemplate having dc financially around here.

TribeofFfive · 08/11/2024 22:53

I had my fourth at 32.

Shaz83 · 08/11/2024 22:51

LadyKryze · 08/11/2024 21:24

Had my 4th at 42. Don't feel any more knackered than I did at 27 when I had my first.

Oh ok do you feel u will have less time
alive than someone who had there last at 33. Let’s say? As another poster said

Are you usually this obtuse?

DreamW3aver · 08/11/2024 20:52

It's obvious that you have less time alive with every subsequent child you have, what is confusing you about that?

So in that case would you think 40 is too late as you get less time alive?

I was 33 and 2.5 months

Hellothere1982 · 08/11/2024 21:31

About to have my 5th aged 42

BeReet · 08/11/2024 21:29

I had my 4th at the age of 36. I started late though, and had my first at 30.

Incognitoburrito88 · 08/11/2024 21:28

Had my 4th and final baby at 40. Not through choice - I had secondary infertility and 7 miscarriages between babies 2 and 4. I would have preferred to be done before 40.

4th at 23, last at 42

Can I ask how many children you have if you had your 4th at 23???

Shaz83 · 08/11/2024 21:17

oviraptor21 · 08/11/2024 21:04

Yes - I'd ignore anyone saying you have less time with them. My youngest has just left home (born when I was 40). I still feel fit enough that it wouldn't be a problem to raise another child if I wanted to. Expecting to have another 20-30 years to spend more time with all my dc.

It’s not nice hearing when they say less time because it makes you feel you shouldn’t do it for that reason. Hence why I started this thread to see actually how common it is… if that makes sense..

5th and final at 33. 43 now.

user1496146479 · 08/11/2024 21:07

I had my fourth at 37

oviraptor21 · 08/11/2024 21:04

Shaz83 · 08/11/2024 20:50

Well that’s fair enough. Not everyone can manage so many kids or wish to have so many which is fair enough and nothing wrong with that some people like to have 1 or 2 or 5… if they can provide a loving healthy home that’s all that matters… I just don’t know why people say you get less time with them if you have your last baby at 40..

Had my 4th at 35 and 5th at 40. 5th would have been at 38 but i had a lot of early mc between 4 and 5.

I hadn't had any losses up to and including 4th.

Very similar. 4th at 36 and 5th at 40 but early mc between.

VivaVivaa · 08/11/2024 20:59

This thread is eye opening. The very small number of couples I know that have 4+ DC had their last DC way into their 30s, if not their early-mid 40s. I barely know anyone who had 2 kids by the age of 30, let alone 4!
