To throw half a rice cake into strangers bin?

I was on my way home from the school run with my 18 month old and older child. Baby had a ricecake with he threw onto the floor, out of the pram. I was in an alleyway type of street with no public bins. I picked up the rice cake and threw it into a wheelie bin which was partially full. As I was doing this, the lady whose house it was, was on her way out. She asked me what I was doing and I explained.

She asked me to take the rice cake out of her bin. Which I did not and continued walking. As I walked off, she was shouting and being quite aggressive. I was with my two kids so just ignored. But was I wrong?

Our bins don't get taken if the wrong thing's in it. How would you like your bin not emptied if someone did it to you? Take your rubbish home.

RawBloomers · 08/11/2024 17:27

It seems like people have got a lot more territorial about their bins over my lifetime and I think that’s, in part, a consequence of councils getting more persnickety about them - policing what goes in different bins, insisting on particular bins, charging more for more/bigger bins or refusing to take extra rubbish, etc.

I would not care if someone put half a rice cake in my bin. I also don’t care if people put their little bags of dog poo in or the odd stubbed out cigarette, etc. But I care when people put bags of rubbish in and there’s no room for my own stuff, or they put the wrong thing in the wrong bin and I get told off by the bin men. I think some people cope with the pressure they feel about rubbish collection by having a blanket approach - viewing it as an affront that someone would use their bin rather than being glad there isn’t more rubbish on the ground making the place look horrid.

I don’t think it was wrong in the sense of immoral or unethical to put it in a bin that wasn’t yours, but it’s not something you had a right to do, so I would have fished it out when asked and found somewhere else to put it.

KitsyWitsy · 08/11/2024 17:26

You should have taken it home to your own bin or put it in a public bin. That said, who could give a fuck, really?

Tink3rbell30 · 08/11/2024 17:26

I bag everything up and seal it carefully to avoid maggots. I wouldn't want someone's sticky germy rice cake thrown loose on top. Your reply was rude and arrogant especially refusing to take it back out when asked.

Ponderingwindow · 08/11/2024 17:26

I’d be annoyed. In my area all trash in the bin has to be bagged. If it is not, they can refuse to pick it up. We have high winds so it’s necessary to keep down litter.

FeralNun · 08/11/2024 17:26

On the face of it, it’s no big deal. But in my area, everything has to be bagged to go in the bin. I just don’t need the hassle of not having my bin emptied because some passer by couldn’t be arsed.

All comes under dickish behaviour I’m afraid.

People need to reframe their thinking. Start living as a community. Why the hell are people getting angry at someone putting something small and inconsequential into their bin. It's not harming anyone in any way. Are people seriously so small mealy mouthed and petty that they feel attacked or outraged or violated at someone putting a rice cake in their bin?

Such feeble small little people living small little lives getting upset over nothing.

Better in the bin than in the ground and no normal person would carry a rice cake home with them when there is a perfectly serviceable bin right there.

Grow up. Grow something. Stop being such pernickety sad little people.

I was not gonna to go digging in a halfway full bin for a half eaten rice cake. I walked away as I noticed her tone was quite rude and of course then, she became aggressive.

But did you apologise? She might just be fed up to the back teeth with people using the bin that she's responsible for because they can't be bothered to take their rubbish home.

Honeybuney · 08/11/2024 17:12

Maybe I live in space. In my area, the bin men would just empty the bin as normal. It was sticky and on top of the bin bag so I’m sure when it’s emptied it will fall out with the rubbish. There would be no reason for her to dig it out either.

Maybe your experience of the bin men and her experience of the bin men is different.

Our bin men are a strange breed. They once took a bin bag out of my bin and left it on my floor because the lid didn't completely close. I asked why and he said it's a health and safety risk. Obviously, handling my bin bag and leaving it on the floor was less of a risk than handling it and putting it in the bin. 🙄

Another, time they refused to take it because the lid was slightly broken so that cost me another £90 to replace the bin and 2 dump trips while I waited for the new bin.

56Chandeliers · 08/11/2024 17:18

I think the worst bit is ignoring her when she asked you to take it out.

What you did was cheeky and going off this thread something a lot of us wouldn’t like. She objected and, regardless of whether you, I or anyone else thinks that’s petty, you should have removed it or as a minimum declined with an apology. Really arrogant.

eddiemairswife · 08/11/2024 17:12

You should have left it on the ground for the birds.

Honeybuney · 08/11/2024 17:12

Wigglywoowho · 08/11/2024 17:08

But it's okay for her to dig in a halfway full bin for your kids, germy, half eaten rice cake. It's your waste. Take it home.

Some crazy replies here. It's a rubbish bin - for running! What difference does it make to her (or anyone for that natter?)

Depends if it is the right bin. I still think you should have taken it home. I live rurally and have had people walk post and drop dog poo in my bin which really smells and is totally the wrong disposal process.

Something like dog poo, I wouldn’t even think about putting it into a strangers bin.

You do seem to have been quite rude though, OP. She asked you to take it out, "which I did not". Then you "just walked away". I'm not surprised she shouted really, in the face of such arrogance. Did you apologise at any point?

I can see why she was annoyed. My bin men take the black bags but leave anything loose. I’ve had half a kfc takeaway I've had to pick out from the bottom and half a soggy rice cake would get stuck and have to be cleaned out before getting mouldy etc etc

i find it irritating that my bin men don’t use the lifty uppy thing for the black bin but do for the recycling wheelie

actually thinking about the hellishness of half chewed rice cake it probably would get stuck like concrete on the inside and be a hassle to clean!!

DrFosterWentToGloucester23 · 08/11/2024 16:34

Imagine having so little going on in your life that this bothers you. Ignore her. Bins belong to the council. As long as it was the right bin for what you put in it (e.g. not a recycling bin) just ignore her.

Absolutely 👏

lovelysunshine22 · 08/11/2024 16:58

Is this serious? What sort of arsehole gets the hump because someone puts a half eaten rice cake in their bin? Someone with no life clearly, sad sad individual! Pay no mind to it OP!

Was it the right bin? If there was a rice cake at the top of my recycling bin they wouldn't empty it at all.

Our bin men wouldn't take cycling or general waste with a rice cake visible. The would put a sticker on it and I'd have to wait 2 weeks for the next collection or drive to the dump. It's a ball ache.

You were in the wrong. Where i live you’d have caused my bin to not be emptied. Just sling it in the bottom of your pram and take your litter home.
