To throw half a rice cake into strangers bin?

I was on my way home from the school run with my 18 month old and older child. Baby had a ricecake with he threw onto the floor, out of the pram. I was in an alleyway type of street with no public bins. I picked up the rice cake and threw it into a wheelie bin which was partially full. As I was doing this, the lady whose house it was, was on her way out. She asked me what I was doing and I explained.

She asked me to take the rice cake out of her bin. Which I did not and continued walking. As I walked off, she was shouting and being quite aggressive. I was with my two kids so just ignored. But was I wrong?

I had a very similar situation afew months back, when I put some rubbish in someone's bin, the lady was clearly watching out the window and was out like a shot ranting at me, to which i gave her abit of an earful back.I was feeling rather stressed at the time, and it wasn't my proudest moment, but I wouldn't give two hoots if someone popped abit of rubbish in my wheelie bin...aslong as it wasn't a big black bin bag full or something! DH however disagrees and said he would be annoyed by it (although would go out and challenge someone!)

I get all kinds of random stuff in my shared bin but I don’t always see it and the bin men will only take bags. The random stuff then sits at the bottom of the bin as my neighbour puts their bag on top of it. I wish people wouldn’t do it and I would have said something to you if it had been my bin.

But it wasn't just a rice cake, it was a sticky germy rice cake according to one ridiculous poster

😂

This attitude that bins are private and not to be shared in any circumstance (like dog poo bags, empty juice cartons or other small rubbish) is so bizarre to me. Where I’m from it’s the most natural thing ever to throw small stuff in each other bins when passing and I’m convinced that this is a contributing factor to why it’s not litter everywhere like I experienced during my time in the UK.

Ketzele · 08/11/2024 22:45

A lot of posters saying how weird and uptight to get upset by a rice cake, seemingly ignoring others explanations of how it actually does affect them.

I'm normally intensely relaxed about this sort of thing. But dear God, a decade of living on the corner of a large primary school has made me that woman who - and yes I have - yelled at strangers to get their fucking crap out of my bin!
The rice cakes, the dog poo, the shitty nappies, the coffee cups... and then it's bin day and I have to fish it all out and bag it up or my bin won't get emptied. Were it not for this I wouldn't care, I'd be offering my bin as a community utility!

I feel.extra arsey as it never seems to happen to my neighbours who are mostly million pound houses. But I live in an old pub divided into flats and somehow it makes passers by less respectful of our boundaries. I've also seen a number of parents letting their toddlers pee behind my front wall. I just open the window and tell them that next time they're very welcome to knock at the door and use my bathroom. They just scuttle off, I've never had an apology.

So yeah, just because you don't see the problem doesn't mean there isn't one.

Every one that has an issue, would you have preferred op left it on the ground, atleast she picked it up.

She could have put it on the back or underneath the pram and taken home or put in a public bin. Wrap in a tissue or wet wipe if touching it was such an issue!

Honeybuney · 08/11/2024 22:26

It was definitely the right bin. I guess the reason it didn’t even occur to me is because I wouldn’t mind someone doing the same to me. I would be upset if I leave the house to discover rubbish on the floor, rather than in the bin.

AnneElliott · 08/11/2024 22:18

If you're sure it was the right bin then she's bonkers and batshit. I agree that dog poo is a no no, but food items are better off in the right bin and not on the floor!

I wouldn't have an issue of this was me - as long as it's the right bin.

NewName24 · 08/11/2024 22:14

I can't believe the split of opinion on here.

You did the sensible and logical thing, popping it in the bin.

Our bin is by the edge of the property / by the pavement and we live on a road with quite a high footfall, so people sometimes put things in our bin. It isn't an issue at all. I'd far rather they did that than left rubbish on the floor.

The woman is clearly a bit bonkers - don't give it any more thought.

MolkosTeenageAngst · 08/11/2024 22:09

I’ll be honest it wouldn’t have even occurred to me to pick it up, if I drop food outdoors I’d just leave it for the birds or other wildlife to eat

CharlotteLucas3 · 08/11/2024 21:49

Some people have an unhealthy obsession with the contents of their bin. I’ve noticed it’s common in dementia. I can’t say I notice what’s in my bin.

I think people who have an unhealthy obsession with the contents of their bin live in a council area that has an unhealthy attitude to bins!!

my neighbour was fined because someone threw a crisp packet in her recycling bin and therefore contaminated everything.

Newsenmum · 08/11/2024 21:55

Ok you would all have what I’m about to tell you. My mum once found a dead pigeon and put it in the closest bin. 😥

She was OTT, imo. Half a bloody rice cake, not a bag of dog shit etc and hardly filling up her bin! Ridiculous.

itsalwaysthesame · 08/11/2024 21:33

I'd have left it on the floor for the birds

Fucking hell, mightily pissed off really?

Yes. OP was quite clear that SHE wasn't going to retrieve from a bin. So why should I have to do it?

Ohnobackagain · 08/11/2024 21:01

@Honeybuney I think it’s ok to put stuff in a bin in passing if you are sure what goes in what bin (and if impractical to take home) although I’d try not to, but where we are, only non-recyclables and no food go in the black bin. Some local authorities check the bin contents as well. So maybe you messed her bin up.

MumChp · 08/11/2024 20:58

peacejoypancakes · 08/11/2024 20:54

her bin isn’t not going to be emptied because of a single rice cake. Once there’s another bag on top of it it won’t even be visible for the bin men to reject!

Depends on your address. It does happen and it sucks

Lovelysummerdays · 08/11/2024 20:56

Wigglywoowho · 08/11/2024 16:39

Our bin men wouldn't take our bin if it had a rice cake in it. They a proper jobs worths. Food waste goes in the food waste bin. I would have to fish out the rice cake and I'd be pissed because I don't want to touch someone else's half eaten food. Take your waste home with you.

This is true where I am. They don’t open bin bags but they do open lid and look inside for contaminants.

Moonchildalltheway · 08/11/2024 20:14

Christ there are some barmy comments on here. It was a rice cake and half of one at that!!

Edited

Some posters are suggesting their bin men wouldn't take the rubbish with a rogue half a rice cake on top. If this is the case I may actually be pretty miffed, with the bell end bin men

peacejoypancakes · 08/11/2024 20:54

MumChp · 08/11/2024 20:23

If it isn't emptied because of it then yes, you care.

@Carrot678 thanks yes do keep me posted

Arran2024 · 08/11/2024 20:52

Was it a food bin? If not imo you def shouldn't have done it. You are possibly contaminating recycling. But as a matter of principle no, don't use other people's bins. We sometimes get stuff put in our bins and I find it horrible as I have to tip the bin to extract it.
