To throw half a rice cake into strangers bin?

I was on my way home from the school run with my 18 month old and older child. Baby had a ricecake with he threw onto the floor, out of the pram. I was in an alleyway type of street with no public bins. I picked up the rice cake and threw it into a wheelie bin which was partially full. As I was doing this, the lady whose house it was, was on her way out. She asked me what I was doing and I explained.

She asked me to take the rice cake out of her bin. Which I did not and continued walking. As I walked off, she was shouting and being quite aggressive. I was with my two kids so just ignored. But was I wrong?

You should have left it on the ground for the birds.

That's what I'd have done.

some earlier mentioned attracting rats 😂😂birds around here wouldn't leave it on the ground long enough!!

Nah, it's a bin. For rubbish.

If it was dog shite or whatever then obviously don't use a random wheelie bin, but for just a bit of rubbish? Crack on. Can't imagine how fucking petty you have to be to get upset about something like that.

@Magnastorm

hsve you even bothered to read the thread or just rushed in to post your opinion??

lots of councils wouldn't empty her bin with a rice cake in it.(instead if in the food waste caddy)

plus lots of people just don't want to have to remove food stuck to their bins, when they put all their rubbish in the Bug Bin in bags.

Riapia · 09/11/2024 13:35

You must be unreasonable OP the majority of the great and good of MN say so. Let this be a lesson to you.

Although all opinions posted on here may not necessarily be those of the people posting them. Always remember this.

Some people have an unhealthy obsession with the contents of their bin. I’ve noticed it’s common in dementia. I can’t say I notice what’s in my bin.

I like my bin to have bagged stuff only. Keeps the interior clean, in case I need to unload the bags and take them to the tip. I think I'm entitled to keep my own bin clean without people putting sticky stuff in it. We're in our 40s with 2 teens.

295bkq · 09/11/2024 13:32

Bins are provided for the use of a specific household - plus, in our area you are not allowed to put food in the general bin, it has to go into the food bin. So, I think she was justified in asking you to remove it. You could have left the ricecake on the floor and a bird would have eaten it.

CoffeeCakeAndALattePlease · 09/11/2024 13:30

I think it was fine and wouldn’t mind you putting it in my bin. A bag of rubbish? Not ok. But 1/2 a rice cake?! Fine.

I had some school kids throw rubbish on the pavement outside our house. I stopped them and asked them to pop it in my bin rather than litter the pavement. They apologised and picked it up and used our bin. I told them they’re welcome to use it if walking past rather than littering. It’s by far the best of the 2 options!

We don't have that rule either. But it's common sense. The bin stays fresh if everything is bagged. Mine is always bagged and the bin never gets grotty. The other lady might be the same, doesn't want mush in her bin.

Yabu. It'll fall into the bin and go manky, she'll have to fish it out. You should only put bagged waste in a bin.

ClytemnestraWasMisunderstood · 09/11/2024 13:13

Much sterotyping here; not all bin men are men

I seriously cannot believe the number of people on here who care about a rice cake in their bin! It would be funny if it wasn't so ridiculous! ITS A BIN!!

Then you are lucky to live in an are where arseholes don't throw random rubbish in your bin because you can't be arsed to take it home, and that you bin people are kind enough to empty bin with random shit in it

ClytemnestraWasMisunderstood · 09/11/2024 13:05

Honeybuney · 08/11/2024 17:01

I was not gonna to go digging in a halfway full bin for a half eaten rice cake. I walked away as I noticed her tone was quite rude and of course then, she became aggressive.

Such arrogance

Honestly, I really didn’t realise it would have caused such a big deal or I wouldn’t have done it. I guess it really didn’t occur to me as in my area, the bin men are fine and normally will empty the bins regardless. Also where it was dropped was like a muddy ish area so didn’t want to hold onto it until I got home.

People need to reframe their thinking. Start living as a community. Why the hell are people getting angry at someone putting something small and inconsequential into their bin. It's not harming anyone in any way. Are people seriously so small mealy mouthed and petty that they feel attacked or outraged or violated at someone putting a rice cake in their bin?

Such feeble small little people living small little lives getting upset over nothing.

Better in the bin than in the ground and no normal person would carry a rice cake home with them when there is a perfectly serviceable bin right there.

Grow up. Grow something. Stop being such pernickety sad little people.

👏👏👏

Getting aggressive over a small rice cake in her bin, really? Crazy!

I don't see the issue, it's not like you put a whole bin bag of rubbish in there. I've seen drink cans in my recycling bin before I didn't put in there, much prefer it to be put in there than left on the floor.

My husband had a women chase after him down the street once to hand him back a bottle she thought he put in her bin, funniest bit was, he didn't even put it in there 😂

I would be furious. I wouldn't know where it had been, what animal had peed on it, whatever, my bin is not a communal resource.

Balloonhearts · 09/11/2024 12:40

Or alternatively the OP could not chuck her litter on someone else's property.

Who wants to fish out a manky rice cake that someone else's toddler has dribbled all over? OP should have done it. It wasn't her property, she had no business putting her rubbish in it. Why should the owner of the bin have to clean up after her?

She and people like her are the reason the motion activated sprinkler was invented.

NewName24 · 08/11/2024 23:53

and the bin men will only take bags

That must be specific you your Council.
Here the truck lifts the bin and everything empties into the truck. No binman is rummaging through what is in there.

Presumably, the OP would be aware if her council only took bin bags, or if it were like all the councils that just tip the contents of the bin into the truck.

NewName24 · 08/11/2024 23:50

JC03745 · 08/11/2024 22:27

She could have put it on the back or underneath the pram and taken home or put in a public bin. Wrap in a tissue or wet wipe if touching it was such an issue!

But why would you do that, if you are standing right by a bin ? Confused

minipie · 08/11/2024 23:24

Our bin men only take bagged rubbish. Any loose items are left in the bin to go manky, or fall out into my front garden when they pull the bags out.

I’d be pissed off if anyone put anything loose into my bin for this reason.

whiteboardking · 08/11/2024 23:21

I'd have chucked if in the bin as only a rice cake.

Gingerbee · 08/11/2024 23:19

We aren't allowed to but any food waste in our wheelie bin. We have small food bins.
I live near a school and people do dump their litter in our wheelie bin and our recycling bags.
It is annoying.

BookGoblin · 08/11/2024 23:18

Why didn't you just crush the rice cake and leave it for the ants?

As for the bin - I can't describe how little I'd care if you put a rice cake in my bin.
