Another XL Bully Attack

Vicious XL Bully attack leaves five-year-old boy with life-changing injuries and needing facial reconstruction surgery | Daily Mail Online

Little Teddy needed 100 stitches in his face but was lucky to escape with his life.

Is it unreasonable now to ask the Government to give a warning in the media, that children are to be kept away from these dogs? Not to enter a house or garden where they're known to be? Even if told that the dog is safe, which they are not.
This little chap was visiting a home with his family when it struck.

XL Bully attack leaves young boy needing facial reconstruction surgery

A five-year-old boy has been left with life-changing injuries following a vicious mauling by an XL Bully in Scotland. His traumatised family who helplessly watched on in horror now want the breed banned.

I don’t have anywhere else to post this so will just go for here. Someone I went to school with has not one, but two XL Bully dogs and I’m so shocked. She seems like she’s done well for herself so I’m just so confused as to what she was thinking with these 2 massive, scary dogs paraded all over her social media.

nocompromisenecessary · 08/11/2024 22:46

Hi Errors,
I'm pretty sure people can request their dogs are put to sleep. It could be done humanely and ceremonially for those that have become loved family pets.
Better that way than after a tragic event.

SunriseMonsters · 08/11/2024 22:45

It is illegal to rehome them. Yes, they can get it put to sleep. They were even offered money to do so but barely any have.

Errors · 08/11/2024 22:41

What options are there for current owners of them?
So let’s say someone had got one before it was understood how dangerous they are, and they wanted to give theirs up because they’d done the research and decided that it wasn’t safe, they can’t go and get them pts can they?! Is their only option to rehome?

There's a map here showing where all the registered XL's live.

Handy if you're moving house or choosing where to go on holiday . . .

https://www.spectator.co.uk/article/exclusive-how-many-xl-bullys-live-in-your-area/

Thanks for this!! There are nearly 150 in my postcode district!!

blueyismyg · 08/11/2024 22:38

@QueenTweenandKingTeen dear god, how am I a 'bully defender' for simply pointing out that bull breeds in general cannot be compared against XL bullies?

The bans you suggest will never happen. It's hard enough to police the dogs that are a genuine danger to the public. If you thinking banning a bunch of other big dogs will help you are deluded. All it does it take resources and attention away from the real issue - XL bullies, who are in a league of their own when it comes to behaviour and temperament.

HeadacheEarthquake · 08/11/2024 22:28

Is there a government petition to at least warn externally of ownership, or at most cull them?

Grassgreenblue · 08/11/2024 22:27

I have a friend (I say friend,I never see her in person but do talk online) who is a massive fan of dogs (so am i)

She's all over defending this breed-'its not the breed, its the owner' is trotted out all the time

99% of the time,I agree but not with these fuckers

I've met two,I didn't know about them at the time as I'd never seen one before (I'm going back a few years)

These two dogs scared the crap out if me-their eyes

It was like they where staring into my soul and waiting to attack-pure evil

I've read up on them and they need a mass cull

I've given her the facts, with proof, but she's not listening and wants one (thankfully she has another breed who hates other dogs)

She's told me that she'd be happy to have them around any grandchild her son gives her (thank god he's got more sense than her and refuses to give her any due to his disabilities-he wouldnt be able to cope with a child) or around friends kids (who are as dumb as she is and would be happy to allow it near their kids)

I believe pets are good for children (I grew up with a dog) but anyone who bleats 'it's not the breed...' needs locking up and the key to be chucked in the nearest river

AlexaSetATimer · 08/11/2024 22:25

@Mumofnarnia sorry but you're starting to sound unhinged now. And a bit thick to be honest.

I agree. @blueyismyg has been very calm in the face of your ridiculous rudeness.

I agree it's time now for all XL bullies to be destroyed as their genetics mean they are completely unpredictable and dangerous. The Killer Kimbo genes are too inbred for any to be safe.

PassMeTheRedbull · 08/11/2024 22:21

There was the 23 year old girl in Ireland who was killed by her XL bully, she was on TikTok protesting about the bans and defending the ‘breed’, she went home after a night out and was mauled to death. Really sad reading the article but it shows that owners of these dogs have no awareness n genuinely don’t think it will be their dog.

LizzyTurner · 08/11/2024 22:19

The problem is so many people loudly proclaim the problem is the owner and nothing to do with the breed.

Which in this case is complete bullshit. The breed is unpredictable and capable of causing huge injury or worse.

Sure, shitty owners don't help, but this breed can (and frequently do) turn on decent owners who have always treated the dog well.

QueenTweenandKingTeen · 08/11/2024 22:18

Flowerydresses · 08/11/2024 22:15

I get it but I mean even if the owner did everything they should ..training, exercising etc these dogs’ would still be unpredictable and unstoppable if they turn .No one can control a 60 kilo monster with knashing teeth if it flips.

Exactly. They are a ticking time bomb, and it is pure luck that someone might have one that doesn't attack. They are now getting to the age where the trigger switches for many of them. These attacks will continue. People get complacent, because they think they are wonder-workers or lion-tamers, then boom, the dog flips and someone is maimed, mauled or killed. Often a child, or an innocent person. I could not care less if the owners themselves were the only victims. Like I said, round them all up, put them all in a compound, and see how they all get on.

Flowerydresses · 08/11/2024 22:15

QueenTweenandKingTeen · 08/11/2024 22:09

Responsible xl owner is an oxymoron.
It is utterly irresponsible to get these dogs.

I think even responsible owners of XL Bullies could find themselves out of their depth . When you look at that post about lineage it’s gone past it’s how they’re trained, responsible owners etc. They are like wild animals and are unstable. I don’t think anyone can control that.

nocompromisenecessary · 08/11/2024 22:08

All those puppies bought in the year before the ban are in adolescence now.

The attacks are ramping up.

If all XL owners with children took responsibility and removed the risk from their household, they would be doing a very positive thing for their children.
I guess we can only hope they take action themselves. Good people would.

Flowerydresses · 08/11/2024 22:04

doodleschnoodle · 08/11/2024 21:52

There's no need for anyone to own these dogs. They are not appropriate pets, they are not appropriate in domestic homes and they absolutely are not appropriate around children. We love dogs, we have a family friendly breed and my kids are very good with dogs, but I would not let my children in any home with an XL Bully. If I see one, I cross the street, especially if I have my kids or my dog with me. Someone shouted abuse at me for doing that a few months ago, saying their dog was friendly and harmless but I don't give a shit. No one who owns one of them is a responsible dog owner who I trust to control their dog.

And all the 'deed not breed' people can fuck off. When we see chihuahuas routinely herding sheep, or spaniels being guard dogs, you can go on about deed not breed. Breed traits are ingrained and strong.

How many more kids have to be killed and maimed by these brutish dogs owned by thickos?

@Mumofnarnia you keep ranting on about "jaw lock" what do you make of breeds like German Shepherds, Rottweilers, Dobermans and other big powerful breeds that bite and tear flesh away?
You're hysterical about bull breeds yet all dogs are capable of killing a person.
A big/giant breed is capable of killing a lot quicker than a bully so why so much hatred and vitriol towards someone who owns bulldogs and actually knows what they're talking about? Your way of thinking is dangerous it's not just bully breeds that snap or cause damage.

Because they don't know what they are talking about (Bluey, the bully-defender, that is. Mumofnarnia is correct.).
Bully breeds lock their jaws and maul. I would ban dobermans, akitas, juskies, rottweilers, cane corsos too. I would have a short list of permitted breeds, and people can pick from that.

This is my worry too. I don't want that risk, for my dc or anyone

I will not let my children go in any house with dogs. I don't care if people think I am weird. My kids are young teens now, and have gotten through life great with this rule.

Errors · 08/11/2024 21:50

I’ve thought about getting a dog at some point. If I ever decide to, I will do a fuck ton of research and would definitely wait until my child was older.

I do love bigger dogs, I’ve weighed up the pros and cons between getting a rescue or a pup. If I got a rescue, I would get a breed that’s well known for being docile such as a greyhound. Or at least a smaller dog that you wouldn’t have to worry about. If I were to decide on say a German Shepherd or a Rottweiler - it’d have to be from a pup so you can train. I couldn’t adopt an older dog that’s one of those breeds, you would have no idea of it’s temperament!

Happy to be corrected/advised by any dog experts on here though!!

Patienceinshortsupply · 08/11/2024 21:49

I posted on another thread that behind where I work, a family house has got 4 of them. Mum and 3 now almost full grown puppies that they couldn't rehome due to the ban - they obviously didn't get vet treatment for the poor dogs. They are cooped up in a tiny garden, never walked, screamed at constantly - and the family have 3 or 4 kids, all very small who play in the garden next to the dogs. They are HUGE dogs and I'm terrified of walking past them. I've reported to Police, RSPCA, the borough council who owns the house and even social services in desperation. 4 months later, dogs are still there........ and that's the issue, authorities don't give a shit.

@Mumofnarnia completely your choice. But comparing a staffy to an XL is utterly pointless. They are incomparable. I don't have a staffy either but I don't have the same feelings towards them as I do towards XL bullies.

From a previous post on MN:

Staffordshire PITBULL Terriers are just small pitbulls, bred for violence. They are prone to aggression and high up on the list of dogs most likely to attack.
"Staffordshire Bull Terriers commit 43% of U.K. attacks" yet are about 5% of the dog population. And these are just the attacks that get reported.
