Vicious XL Bully attack leaves five-year-old boy with life-changing injuries and needing facial reconstruction surgery | Daily Mail Online

Little Teddy needed 100 stitches in his face but was lucky to escape with his life.

Is it unreasonable now to ask the Government to give a warning in the media, that children are to be kept away from these dogs? Not to enter a house or garden where they're known to be? Even if told that the dog is safe, which they are not.
This little chap was visiting a home with his family when it struck.

XL Bully attack leaves young boy needing facial reconstruction surgery

A five-year-old boy has been left with life-changing injuries following a vicious mauling by an XL Bully in Scotland. His traumatised family who helplessly watched on in horror now want the breed banned.

I rehomed an 11 week old puppy from England when the ban was announced, I have always advocated for xl bullies , the pup was beautiful, loving , amazing with my children and other dogs....and one day out of the blue she attacked my 8 year old dog infront of my children, the xl bully was only 8 months old and turned into a wild animal. She attacked her ragging her throat, her ears , legs everything. My old dog was screaming for her life and I just couldn't get her off :( this happened infront of my baby and 3 other young children.
Never again will I trust an American bully of any kind . My old dog was screaming for her life . I called police everything and no one would help me. Eventually after 40 minutes I got the xl bully pup outside and rushed my dog to the vets . The vet said only her fur saved her , I had the puppy pts. And I was absolutely fukin broken at doing that. But if I had to bury my child it would have ended me.

When they attack they attack till the death ...I think that's the problem here.

Sorry that happened to you but the “no one would help me” comment. Who should have helped you? Who should put themselves in danger and at extra cost on the public purse because you chose to house a dangerous dog?

The authorities have said there are dangerous breeds. You thought differently and you knew best yet expect an intervention and put others at risk as well as yourself.

This shows people can’t make objective decisions sometimes.

Marieb19 · 09/11/2024 19:25

They are dangerous. They should be called.

@Mumofnarnia GrinGrinGrin takes one to know one. You're so funny. Great entertainment for us all. Not to mention more exclamation marks than an MLM seller.

You’re hilarious and extremely nasty. Good job I’m not that bothered about strangers on the internet!
That poster kept on replying to me because i commented on their post and said I would never let my child near a staffy, claiming they’re not comparable so what’s your issue? Oh that’s right, you thought you’d jump on my post too and call me ‘unhinged’ and ‘rude’ all because I said I won’t allow ANY bully near my child! Please inform me why I’m starting to sound ‘unhinged’! The only person who seems a little unhinged and rude is you! I did not ask you to rudely comment on my post! Any further nastiness and rudeness from you will be reported! Have a good day!

Henry176 · 09/11/2024 17:51

We have a ginormous Newfypoo, but she never remotely poses any threat to anybody (apart from being licked too death). It seems to be a cult status thing to have an XL bully, why?

I think I’ve seen some around town. Do we report them? To the police? And what are the breeds that look like XL bullies but are not. I wonder if I am getting them mixed up

They should be muzzled and on a lead in public. If not, you can report to police or dog warden.

SunriseMonsters · 09/11/2024 17:33

Croydon central is a shit pit with a serious drug and crime problem

Indeed. However, there are even worse ones, and the data in that map shows how closely they map onto areas where there are a high prevalence of these vicious dogs so the "stereotypes" of who is keeping them don't seem to be far off the mark.

Carol4155 · 09/11/2024 17:32

SunriseMonsters · 09/11/2024 17:29

Why did you advocate for them @Carol4155 ? Why did you need it to happen to you personally before you'd believe the endless reports and the statitstical data?

You were very lucky this happened before she was older and stronger and that it wasn't your baby or young children who were attacked. I just cannot understand what you were thinking in the first place to have any kind of puppy around a baby and very young children let alone one from a notoriously vicious breed that you knew was being banned for this very reason.

It would be helpful if you could explain what made you think this was a good idea. Genuinely, I do not understand. Did you think all of the data and news reports were invented?

Because I have an American bulldog who is 8 , and American bully and American bulldogs both descent from the old English bulldog ...my 8 year old dog is the most loving affectionate dog with my kids , has been since I had them, I've always believed it's the owners who can determine how a dog behaves , obviously in this situation I was proved wrong , I know many xl bullies with families that are amazing with child4en and other pets , but this incident has changed my whole perception and I believe now that it is genetic and they do have some sort of fighting instinct that they kill whenever there is conflict.

Top area is Croydon

Looking at the data per 100k residents (postcode areas are different sizes) it doesn't seem to be the worst (though still bad!). It has the highest total number but some areas are much, much worse for prevalence per head of population.

Unsurprisingly, it seems that the areas with higher numbers of these abominations per capita correlate strongly to areas notorious for higher levels of crime and therefore with a larger proportion of the population being quite intellectually challenged and "interesting" moral values. They are also largely deprived areas which means many of these animals are likely being kept in inappropiate conditions and cramped accommodation which will of course exacerbate their (un)natural tendency to be vicious.

The Government (current and last) are utterly spineless for not insisting all of them are pts. It is a public health hazard and in my opinion the politicians who implemented the pathetic non-ban are directly responsible for the ongoing attacks, maulings and deaths that would have been prevented if they had taken appropriate action.

Croydon central is a shit pit with a serious drug and crime problem. They used to have XL Bully fests in the local parks. Not surprised at all that it tops the list for antisocial, murderous dogs.

Errors · 09/11/2024 07:28

I agree! I knew my town would have a high number of them despite not seeing any around - nearly 150 in my densely populated postcode!

Be vigilant, stay safe.

HildaHosmede · 09/11/2024 13:17

Christ. He's lucky it got him on the face because if it had been a few inches lower and his neck he'd be dead.

Comes to something when you need to say a kid was lucky to be bit on the face. All XL Bully's need to be seized and culled.

Christinglechristmas · 09/11/2024 13:13

@SerendipityJane good point re guns

SunriseMonsters · 09/11/2024 12:57

Sorry!

...deliberately threatening or they lack the intelligence to understand basic data on how dangerous they are therefore can't be trusted to make competent risk assessments and decisions due to their lack of intelligence and therefore the decision must be taken out of their hands.

If the current restrictions were effective and observed by oh-so-loud about how responsible they are owners then attacks would not have continued. Yet they are.

Therefore, it is obvious that the restrictions imposed aren't sufficiently robust and are not being observed or enforced so aren't effective. The evidence is clear and Government needs to implement an actual ban, which means these animals are prohibited from being owned and any reported will be pts immediately. It's a public safety issue and it's disgusting that politicians are allowing people (including children) to continue to be mauled and killed.

The only way anything will be done about it is if sufficient numbers of people contact their MPs about it directly so that they see the strength of feeling on the subject.

There are none (less than 10 anyway) in my postcode (country villages), my parents postcode (country villages) and my work postcode (small country town). My DP’s postcode shows 19 (small town with a bit of a rough reputation).

I knew there wouldn’t be many round here as I’ve only ever seen one before. To be fair it was pleasant enough but the owners let it off the lead at an event (long before the ban) whilst she was in season with the owner of the event’s male dog followed it round extremely interested in it but was too small to actually accomplish his plan. To be fair to the XL she did put him with him relentlessly perusing her in good nature. But it shows the sort of owners of these dogs that they bought their in season dog to an event then let her off the lead when they knew there was an entire male that lived there.

Yes, because rural/ sparsely populated areas (that are more affluent as well) will have less than 10 in total therefore not be represented in the graphic.

Some areas have orders or magnitude more people living in them than others, hence some won't register in the data at all, and for those that do the per capita prevalence is the relevant comparator (not total number of franken-dogs).

The bottom line is these people were given a chance to have the animals pts for free and didn't. They have no social conscience/ own them to be deliberately threaten

There will always be anecdotal evidence of different dogs flipping. However the key difference with the XL Bully is the ridiculously small gene pool. You would almost think horrific inbreeding was dangerous.

Illness and brain tumours can cause erratic and violent behaviour, I believe. And they sometimes don't manifest themselves until a violent outburst.

Sorry, but the bottom line is that your having a dog doesn't improve my life one bit. So I resent having to make adjustments beyond trying to be a nice citizen and tolerating others proclivities.

@nocompromisenecessary it's behind a pay wall. Where are A few top areas please

I haven't paid, I just clicked no thanks and the article was released. Maybe try that?

Leicester, Derby, Sheffield, Runcorn, Widnes, St Helens, Birmingham, Croydon, and Liverpool seem to be pretty bad with hundreds of dogs clustered across a few areas in each place.

However, there seem to be dozens of dogs in over half the postcodes in England. Where there are between 0-9 dogs no figure is published - but there must be a few in every area an there are 55,000 registered overall.
