Vicious XL Bully attack leaves five-year-old boy with life-changing injuries and needing facial reconstruction surgery | Daily Mail Online

Little Teddy needed 100 stitches in his face but was lucky to escape with his life.

Is it unreasonable now to ask the Government to give a warning in the media, that children are to be kept away from these dogs? Not to enter a house or garden where they're known to be? Even if told that the dog is safe, which they are not.
This little chap was visiting a home with his family when it struck.

XL Bully attack leaves young boy needing facial reconstruction surgery

A five-year-old boy has been left with life-changing injuries following a vicious mauling by an XL Bully in Scotland. His traumatised family who helplessly watched on in horror now want the breed banned.

Are the press using the wrong names, they seem to be used interchangeably across different sites?

The media have been calling them xl American bulldogs etc ...an American bulldog is not an American bully. American bulldogs have not been created with American pit bulls. Unlike American bullies ...

My American bulldog is 8 years old , she was mauled everywhere especially her neck , the puppy had no injuries :( just glad my old dog is still amazing with the kids , she was kept separated from them for a while till she healed and i made sure she was still the same dog, this hasn't even changed her temperament. Im just grateful she is still alive , she helps me with panic attacks and cptsd everyday

I'm glad she has recovered. Poor thing.
*Spondoolies *
I haven't seen any news reports of numerous American Bull dogs attacking people. Maybe there is a reason the Cane Corso are the next breed to watch for?

Spondoolies · 10/11/2024 20:08

Ok, I didn’t know they are different breeds but I’m a bit confused because there are deaths and attacks by American Bulldogs mentioned as well as XL Bully’s. I thought the XL name was just for those over a certain size. Surely American Bulldogs are also a huge risk to children as well?

@Carol4155 would you mind clarifying, you’ve said you would never trust any type of American Bully again but also that you have an 8 year old American Bully, have you got rid of both dogs now?

American bulldog is not an American bully

If I've read it correctly, the 8 year old dog is an American Bulldog, which is a different breed.

I've not been trying to question you in an adversarial way, just trying to understand what happened. I said I am grateful for you answering my question as I can imagine that it's difficult to come onto a thread like this and speak about what happened to you but it's so important that people who have experienced it first hand speak out about it because those who own these dogs still are for more likely to listen to you. I hope you will do everything possible to campaign for all of these dogs to be removed before further attacks take place.

Totally agree with this, I was going to post something similar that it’s really good to hear the perspective of someone who has had their mind changed by experiencing an incident. People are far more likely to be convinced by hearing from posters like that.

You took a video of it? How could you do that when trying to get your children and baby to safety and calling police and panicking and trying to save your other dog? How could you possibl have been thinking or caring about the breeder's opinion at that time, or even known the breeder personally if you rehomed the puppy from someone else as you claimed previously?

I really do not understand. But if this is real then you should very much be doing everything possible to publicise how dangerous these dogs are and to campaign for them all to be put to sleep.

Dogs where kicked in the kitchen and door shut then got my children to safety, tried numerous times to get in kitchen to separate and I couldn't. Everytime I tried to open kitchen door xl puppy would attack her throat again which is why I videos for 5 seconds , police where already called as soon as the dogs where in kitchen ...dunno why ur questioning me , u weren't there ..u didn't have 4 children to protect , and try and protect ur other dog , when this happens ur adrenaline is chaotic , u panick , u dont know what to do

It would also be helpful @Carol4155 if people like you (dog lovers, experienced with similar breeds but having witnessed this sudden flipping and desire to kill first hand, even when a dog was well-cared for) could speak out to other people who are still keeping these dogs, use your voice jn the media campaigns about it.

People who are keeping them because they are scummy people who want a vicious dog are beyond help and wilk have to have them forcibly removed. But if as you say there are still numerous families who just do not believe the truth that there is something inherently genetically wrong with these dogs and that they are never, ever safe to keep, then they may be more inclined to listen to someone like you and how you could easily have ended up with dead children as a result. Maybe more people will be inclined then to get these awful dogs pts and you may save some lives by speaking up.

I videoed the attack after several attempts to save my other dog , I had to video so the breeder would know why I had a puppy pts. She told me after watching the video that she hopes I can live with myself 👀

SerendipityJane · 10/11/2024 15:25

The anthropomorphism of animals is the issue, describing the animals as "loving" "soppy" "daft"
These are human traits and dogs are not human- people need education.

Some people cannot ever be educated. Thick is as thick does.

Thank you for answering @Carol4155 , I appreciate you doing so. It is interesting to hear your explanation of why you thought it would be different in your case.

There's was no mention of a ban in Scotland when I rehomed the puppy , there are thousands of xl bullies in family homes ..which makes you think it's the owners that cause these attacks on people or they are mistreating the dogs ...I brought her up with nothing but love and for 8 months she was amazing , there was no thought in my head at all that she would do what she done

This I still do not understand, though. If you know they have been banned in other countries surely you'd do some research into the data. Endless reports of them being "so gentle and affectionate" and then flipping, just like happened to you. I still don't really understand why you'd have discarded all of that data, all of those reports and concluded they must all have been terrible owners (like there aren't terrible owners of other breeds too, but yet not this prevalence of reports of that happening with other types of dog)? Especially with a baby and young children around. Very lucky that in your case your family didn't end up with a tragedy.

And that is the issue isn't it @Carol4155 , love will never cancel out the genetic default. Training won't either regardless of how experienced you are or think you are.

These are human traits and dogs are not human- people need education. Nor do they particularly like being danced with, hugged, or dressed in outfits.

These are Dog FIGHTING dogs.
Bred from Pit bulls. With the express design to fight other dogs.

But with American Bully added to make them bigger and stronger.

It is in their nature, just as it is in a Border collie to be intelligent and to herd, and to work in close partnership with its owner herding sheep or cattle.

These Pitbull X Dogs lived with their owner for ''years'' then suddenly attacked her-plus attacked neighbours.

Rummly · 09/11/2024 20:42

I took in a lovely orange and black striped kitten. It was wonderful for a couple of months - but my, did it grow!

It had to be PTS after it ate my next door neighbour.

I had no idea that tigers might be difficult to look after, or that they’re banned pets.

You said the ban was announced? So the ban wasn’t yet in place but knew there was going to be a ban. Or is it a different puppy you’re talking about in your first sentence? Can’t quite work out if you mean you rehomed a different puppy. Or if you took the puppy from someone else to live with you.

@QueenTweenandKingTeen
The first link you posted shows a woman with a small child walking what looks to be a staffie and another staffie attacking it. The attacking dog showed no interest in the child. And because of the size of the attacking dog was able to be brought under control, imagine if it was 10 times bigger ! Still awful for that poor women, her dog and child, that someone who probably knew their dog was dog aggressive let it wander around outside, idiot !
A few of the links mention staffie crosses, which is what I was trying to put across in one of my posts. A lot of 'staffies' are not your normal small staffie but a mix of other dogs, with very little care given to the temperament of either sire or dam.
Personally I wouldn't get any terrier type with small children in the house, because they don't generally suffer fools gladly, whilst being fantastically loyal to a select few, and are renowned to be other dog unfriendly and who wants to deal with that when you also have small children to contend with?
I also don't get the issue some people have with muzzling a dog so that it can enjoy walks without causing any issue that may result in it being PTS ? Horses wear muzzles to stop them eating too much grass if they are prone to laminitis, doesn't stop them enjoying being in the field and do horse stuff !

I think people are often lulled into a false sense of security, especially if they bought one as a little squishy puppy, a biddable dog is fairly easy to handle regardless of their size, what people forget is how hard it would be to handle should it stop being biddable and actually want to kill you or someone else.
They also fail to realise how vulnerable the human body is to such an attack, we are walking weak spots, children being especially vulnerable, all of which will result in a very quick death should they be bitten in these weak spots.

Sorry that happened to you but the “no one would help me” comment. Who should have helped you? Who should put themselves in danger and at extra cost on the public purse because you chose to house a dangerous dog?

The authorities have said there are dangerous breeds. You thought differently and you knew best yet expect an intervention and put others at risk as well as yourself.

This shows people can’t make objective decisions sometimes.
