to not let neighbour use my shower!

Next door neighbour messaged me earlier. Her shower has broken and she can’t get anyone to come out and fix it until the week after next. She asked if she could ‘pop in’ to use ours every other day.

I don’t want her to! I’ve got most of next week off work and plan to be at home a lot, doing not much at all, after a crazy busy time lately. I don’t want to worry about somebody coming to have a shower!

For context - I get on with her absolutely fine. We chat now and again and have walked our dogs together a few times in the past.. wouldn’t say we are especially close though.

AIBU to say no to this request? I know that she moved to the area for work and none of her family/friends are around here. So I might be her only option and I do feel bad about this.

I would. You’re going to be home. It would be different if you said you were full on at work next week and out the door early etc but you’ve said your home and not doing anything.

If she's been looking forward to a week off work, with no schedule or commitments, she might feel much less relaxed if she has to make sure her home is clean and tidy every other day and that she is up and dressed at a time that suits the neighbour.

Well, whatever.
But personally I value having sound and friendly relationships with my neighbours so I'm prepared to put myself out a bit on their behalf. It cuts both ways.

I have good relationships with most of my neighbours too but we've never showered in each other's houses, or asked to.

God lord the responses on here! I lived for 40 years in central London and then moved to a small community in NZ. We live on tank water; whatever falls from the sky is our water source. In dry spells we and our neighbours frequently run out of water and have to rely on overworked water deliveries by truck for huge amounts of money that could take weeks when tanks run dry.
When we run out there is NO water. Nothing from the taps. No toilet flushing. No drinking water. No buckets to flannel wash. We all keep upwards of 50litres of drinkable water for emergencies though but it's precious stuff as the supermarket then runs out when it's dry
We have lived in three houses here and have relied on the good grace of relative strangers to allow us to use their shower and, god forbid, their toilets for poos, if they still have water. It's a precious commodity they are sharing and we have never been turned down. In fact they post on the community Facebook page offering it
We now live in a house with 3 huge water tanks and a bore which gives us unlimited water and we've had our house open for all manner of neighbours and families trooping in for ablutions in mid summer. We even do loads of laundry and dishwashing for randoms down the street!
I work in the upstairs office and they just get on with it.
We've had gifts of wine, home cooking, child's drawings (not of them pooping except for one), restaurant vouchers, gin and whisky.

No ones has left pubes. Most leave it cleaner than when they got in.
Yes it's a slight bother but so what.
I forget that Brits can be so uptight sometimes.

anyolddinosaur · 08/11/2024 10:48

I wouldnt like it either, but I'd offer a set time that suited me as she's only asked for every other day.

If it's that hard to get a plumber locally what would you do if your shower stopped working?

TwattyMcFuckFace · 08/11/2024 10:47

I don't even understand what you're saying now @Bippy2024 .

In your haste to keep deflecting any criticism of your posts, you're not making much sense.

It really isn't.

It really is.

JaneJeffer · 08/11/2024 10:47

Seems some people think this woman is going to undress in her own house before she rocks up for a shower.

Bogginsthe3rd · 08/11/2024 00:09

Could you compromise and flannel wash your neighbour every other morning , in the garden ?

Flannel? Does the OP not have a hose?

Gettingbysomehow · 08/11/2024 10:46

I think thats a bit mean. Mind you Id never ask my neighbours if I could use their shower, id just wash myself down. Doesnt she have a bath?

TwattyMcFuckFace · 08/11/2024 10:46

this woman's life would be vastly improved at a minor inconvenience to me, so why would I say no?

You've summed it up perfectly @ChristmasFluff

This thread's turned a bit weird now.

Naked is natural, but the way some people keep obsessing over it, it's like they're turning it into something completely different in their minds.

Creepy.

I know, I do wish you'd stop obsessing. It's just the way people have showers and a factual statement. Creepy to zero in on a simple fact. Shudder.

Can you imagine if Jesus was a Mumsnetter? "Blind? Yeah, well that's my garment hem you're touching and I might catch covid". "Sorry, Lazarus will just have to stay dead, I'm enjoying a leisurely meeting with my bros here". "Don't open the door! It might be some people wanting fed."

We are the sum of our actions. I'm definitely not a push-over and have good boundaries, but this woman's life would be vastly improved at a minor inconvenience to me, so why would I say no?

Fair enough. I think I'm able to understand a pretty broad range of mindsets, but there are certain ones I do struggle to understand, it's true. I imagine that's true of most people?

Sure, but it's not a way out there "mindset" to not want virtual strangers getting naked in your home - even if some posters are super hysterical about the factual word "naked" 😅

It's not out there either to imagine that if someone is cheeky enough to ask this they will push for more.

It's not hard to imagine many would worry about the hygiene of the person using their personal space.

And many people are just private and don't want people in their home unless it's really necessary.

I don't thnk any of those are out there notions, or particularly difficult to imagine or empathise with.

I don't know if I'd let them, but I didn't like the way the OP was being dragged and made out to be selfish or mad for not being over the moon about her private time for a week being interrupted by a cheeky neighbour who doesn't need access to her shower, she just wants it.

It's always really weird to me how many commenters online have zero empathy or ability to imagine that other people think differently, cannot for even a second see an alternative point of view.

It sure is mind boggling.

Chaotica · 08/11/2024 10:37

Let her use the shower! It's no big deal (and will help her out massively).

scotstars · 08/11/2024 10:35

I wouldn't dream of asking a neighbour this. Its more something I would ask a family member and if no other choice I'd go to gym/take out a trial or membership for couple of weeks!

Bippy2024 · 08/11/2024 10:33

AggysJeans · 08/11/2024 10:31

This is mind boggling to me. Of course you don't HAVE to do it. But I just cannot in a million years imagine saying no to a neighbour in need like this (unless something very specific was happening, like ill family member)?! And I say this as someone who doesn't have ANY volunteering jobs 😂....
I'm also messy, and a bit unreliable with cleaning the bathroom, and would have to adjust my habits while neighbour used the shower, or give a disclaimer ("you're very welcome. I'll warn you in advance, though, it's a bit of a mess").

Having said that, I think if it's going to make you really pissed off, OP, it may be better to say no in case neighbour picks up on this and feels really awkward/bad using it.

Again with the 'naked'?!

Are you quite ok?

What sort of awful tragedy do you think will befall the household if someone removes their clothing, to wash their skin?

I suppose you could always button your nightie and burn some sage?

Oh, you shower with your clothes on! What a fruitcake! 😂😅😆

godmum56 · 08/11/2024 10:30

If you aren't REALLY good friends, I think its weird to ask. Over the last few years I have had a couple of times when I have been without shower or bath for a couple of weeks because of stuff being done in the house and I just strip washed and washed my (long) hair in the sink. On one occasion there was no hot water at all and I boiled big saucepans.

TwattyMcFuckFace · 08/11/2024 10:30

Bippy2024 · 08/11/2024 10:22

They just get on with it, I should think, since there's no other option.

But letting a person you are on nodding terms with into your home to get naked in your bathroom is entirely optional.

Not so much 'nodding terms', more 'I get on with her absolutely fine. We chat now and again and have walked our dogs together a few times in the past'

I'm sorry but who the fuck asks to do this?

Our boiler was broken for a month with no hot water, never even crossed my mind for a split second to ask any of my neighbors if I could come get naked and wet in their house.

never even crossed my mind for a split second to ask any of my neighbors if I could come get naked and wet in their house.

Yeah, she asked to borrow the shower, not film a porn movie 🙄

I'm utterly embarrassed for some of the posters on here who are not only selfish and unhelpful, but they try to justify it with ridiculous hyperbolic posts.

Like the PP who wouldn't want her neighbour's pubes in her shower.

FFS does she clean it with tongue?
