Paedophile in area what to do

Really don’t know if should do something or not? Local paedophile released from prison early after 2 years. He is on sex offenders register and sexual harm order for life. He lives close to myself. However he now keeps appearing each week same day at the local council building where I work. Here there is a library and kids nursery. Last week the building was evacuated following a fire alarm he came out and was gawping at very young group of school kids virtually on top of them.

aibu to report him, is he meant to be going places where kids are my concern is he might be scoping out the library where the school children visit.
report to building manager. Library ? I feel really bad it’s playing on me and feel like can’t turn blind eye but what’s reasonable and what can you not do ????

Warn everyone you know and definitely tell the nursery and the library.
the first person I would be speaking to would be the police. That man clearly needs to be locked away somewhere he can’t do harm to children.

personally I would rather they were put down.

I cannot believe you’re defending a child sex offender JFC

How is she defending him?

mickey54 · 07/11/2024 21:34

@Mrsttcno1 ah thanks so yes this sounds very similar situation and that’s my worry he prob can go about as he pleases. Just doesn’t sit right. He prob has to actually do something to get recalled to prison

You won’t get in trouble. You’re being a cautious citizen. Not sure how I would act in your situation, I would probs try and petition him out the area tbh lol. Ugh. Vile creature!!!

Petition him out of the area? Don't be ridiculous.

Report it to probation. But, this is the one you know about. You will pass many every day that you don’t know about

@BourbonsAreOverated yes I know this it’s just not nice knowing this one! Looking for probation details

Unfortunately I suspect there’s really nothing that can be done and he’s probably not doing anything legally wrong or breaching anything by doing this.

We had a similar situation a couple of years ago, he had been released and moved in with his mum in the street behind us, young children living either side and all up that street, a nursery literally 1 street over and a primary school over the road. Used to sit in his front garden blatantly watching the kids in the street not even trying to hide it, used to walk back and forth outside the nursery and the school staring. He was reported by so many people and every single time nothing came of it, as long as he wasn’t approaching, contacting or working with children then he wasn’t technically in breach of anything, there’s nothing that says he can’t “watch”.

It is awful to see though and so worrying to think he has to actually be caught doing something again before anything will be done although I appreciate that as others have said there is no alternative really as there are kids everywhere.

mindutopia · 07/11/2024 21:04

Nothing. He’s allowed to be out in public. A library isn’t a child only space like a school, so his restrictions won’t prevent him going there. In fact, the convicted abusers I know on sexual harm prevention orders are not prevented from being around children (if you can believe it).

Honestly, I can 100% assure you that one of your colleagues you work with is also a child sexual abuser. It’s incredibly common. There is probably someone in your family. Statistically speaking, it would be unusual if there wasn’t. You just happen to know about this one and be grateful that you do. Obviously if he does anything actually criminal, then report it.

Can you link to any evidence of your assertion about prevalence. 100% chance of working with a paedophile? Obviously this cannot be true.

Onlyvisiting · 07/11/2024 21:26

Report it to police/probation. If he's breaching his conditions they need to know. If he's not then they won't do anything and no harm done.
I'm not sure about telling the nursery/library people, there is a fine line between being aware and cautious and stirring up vigilantes.

Surely that info would be passed on though through the system? Especially if same county? Some counties are huge.
Gosh it’s so bloody awful isn’t it. I wish there was a death sentence for paedophiles tbh. It would just make life less scarier!

@Ellsbells22 i personally think he is an accident waiting to happen he got 5 years out in 2 it’s disgusting

That's some busy building!

Surely if the police are that accessible, you just pop in & have a word.

no idea what you're on about confidentiality, unless someone told you that shouldn't have, what's the problem (& how did you find out)

@AutumnLeaves24 it is it’s a big hub but unfortunately the police are not accessible to the public from here.

He’s probably better off in an area where he is known to local services - police, probation, safeguarding. “Moving him on” risks losing all the local intelligence that may pick up on patterns of offending behaviour. It’s how many offenders evade being caught.

wonderstuff · 07/11/2024 21:20

I would report to children's services, but there may be nothing they can do and there are unfortunately peadophiles absolutely everywhere. Until they actually get caught very few people will have any idea who they are, at least when on sex offenders register they are monitored.

mickey54 · 07/11/2024 21:05

@Catza the police are also in this building that’s the audacity of this bloke. I did think surely this is not allowed

I know someone released from prison due to child sex offences - he was under probabtion and in the early days could no longer own a phone or any device with internet access as part of his probation rules. it is possible this person is the under the same rules, and could be genuinely visiting the library to innocently access the internet. Also, before anyone jumps to defend these people the person I mentioned above reoffended and was sent straight back to prison 🙌🏼

In protection of children I would keep a log of visits and his behaviour, should you reach a point you feel you need to report, the police officers on-site should help give you the details of the general probation teams, otherwise crime stoppers is always an option people rarely think of in these cases.

stichguru · 07/11/2024 21:18

Let police know and let the nursery know. I would think it's extremely unlikely he is out of prison and still not allowed to go to any public area where kids might be. Kids could be anywhere - library, shop, doctors, A&E, park, on the street. In fact the more you think about it, if he wasn't allowed where kids are, that would effectively mean he was on house arrest. However letting those people know means they can act if he is doing anything he shouldn't and if he's not, they won't and that won't hurt you, him or anyone else.

mickey54 · 07/11/2024 21:16

Catza · 07/11/2024 21:08

OP said there is a nursery. I'm fairly certain visiting one weekly is absolutely in violation of his release conditions.

@Catza yes library and nursery opposite each other the day of the fire alarm the kids were in the library when he appeared on car park

What, and inflict him on a different area?

Paedophiles exist. We can't just shoot them all. They exist and they have to live somewhere. Better to have them living where the police etc know where they are than driven underground.

well yes, maybe where there are much less children knocking about as I’m sure the local authority / CP will know. He clearly hasn’t integrated back into society well by leering at children at the library so needs to be somewhere like a city centre where children aren’t there often / live there compared to suburbs! Doubt they’ll go underground when they have to report to probation often?! how would you feel if you were in OP situation or if one of those children were yours he was ogling?

BangFlash · 07/11/2024 21:14

How do you know this guy is a convicted paedophile?

Assuming it is public knowledge not something you have learnt in the course of your work then you are merely 'gossiping' at worst by telling people you think should know.

Do be damn sure you've got the right guy though, and dont go too far eg telling everyone or putting it on Facebook, that could constitute harassment.

I think you would be doing the right thing to speak to the police and warn the nursery.

TooBigForMyBoots · 07/11/2024 21:14

Report to the Building manager and probation services.

I’d let the police know and the nursery, if I was a nursery worker I would want to know if there was anyone that presented a risk to the children in my care.

The nursery surely wouldn't let a random man anywhere near the kids anyway

@User37482 i know I did think this I did warn the school teacher the other day when he was ogling the kids
