Knowingly stealing - food shop delivery

Ponter · 07/11/2024 13:45

We order from one of the main supermarkets. On the day of the delivery (last week), I decided to cancel the shop as many of my plans had changed so i didn’t need some of the stuff that had been ordered.

Anyway, the food van turned up and I had a hunch that if I accepted the order I could get the groceries and still get the refund. Which is exactly what happened. It was a risk but I still needed majority of the groceries ordered so thought I’d chance it. We had similar happen once before but we were honest in that scenario.

Even if the supermarket comes back and want me to rectify the error/pay up I can do so - that’s no problem.

I know it’s wrong but I believe the majority would do the same.

Be honest would you?

I’m not boasting. Never once stole before. Always try do the right thing normally. I just chanced it. I have to be honest we were hosting a dinner party which didn’t go ahead so the nice items - wine, meat just tempted me to chance it.

You’re obviously still a thief no matter how nice you try to spin it. It won’t even cross my mind to do that. I might have collected the groceries at that point because I still needed it and I would have thought my cancellation didn’t go through like it was too late but as soon as I see that I’ve been refunded, I’ll be calling to pay it, not boasting online

In a slightly different situation - we once waited in for delivery, I saw the van arrive at our back gate and was waiting for a phonecall so I could explain to come round the front but he very quickly just drove off! This was a Christmas shop and I was so mad about it (we wouldn’t have not another slot) - I then called standard customer service line who refunded the shop but said they had no way of contacting the driver so couldn’t get our shopping to us (I really had no interest in a refund), I then called to complain at the shop the shopping came from and the driver apparently had form for doing similar so he was instructed to turn around, which he did and the shopping was delivered. In this case I felt like I’d spent so much of my time on the issue that I certainly wasn’t going to spend time calling customer service to give them the money back, I accepted it as compensation for my time wasted due to poor work ethic! Not sure what I’d do in your situation tbh!

I still think you should have let them know you did eventually get your order, however your scenario clearly wasn't engineered like OPs.

SherbetSweeties · 07/11/2024 14:15

No in all honesty I don't steal.

KeepingGoingOneDayAtATime · 07/11/2024 14:14

This is fraud OP.

And you are announcing online that you did it, with an account that is connected to your email address.

That is not a smart idea.

Willsnbills · 07/11/2024 14:14

@Ponter what exactly do you want out of this thread? Honestly, what do you want?!

I don’t live rurally. If I get banned I can switch to pretty much any supermarket that delivers. The only reason we go to this supermarket is because there are a few supermarket own items I prefer

You're not making yourself sound any better OP.

This was deliberately planned, not just keeping a random item. So theft.

I had a random bag of stuff delivered with an order once. As I'd opened it, the chat bot told me to keep it. I'd whatsapped the street group to see if anyone was missing a bag. No one was. So I had all the ingredients for a beef bourgignon, thanks Morrisons! But I'd put effort into trying to sort it, so not theft.

This! I had an extra crate delivered once. DH was helping take it in (and wouldn’t have a notion what I’d get in a weeks shop). Only when I was putting it away, did I realise I’d a whole pile of extra items I hadn’t ordered. The thought of keeping it never crossed my mind (and easily could have done because how was delivery driver to know which house he’d mistakenly left it at). But I was more concerned that some poor person was missing their stuff so rang supermarket helpline. Was told to keep it, for safety reasons they couldn’t take it back. So felt like I did the right thing and got an extra pile of shopping. The girl on the phone did ask me to list the extras so she could try and track the delivery it belonged to.

I have worked for supermarkets, they won't notice and they really won't care. Once the shopping is on the van, it's easier to just have it gone than bring it back and put it in shelfs again. Which probably won't happen it will just be wasted anyway.

This is exactly what I assumed. They are a supermarket not the FBI.

i certainly didn’t submit my order thinking I would then cancel it in the hope of getting free groceries.

I just knew that my friend had the same happen and she got away with it.

So I didn’t tell the driver that I had cancelled the order when he turned up as I had an inkling I could get away with it like my friend.

I know it is wrong though.

So, at some point, you knew you were setting this up.

StormingNorman · 07/11/2024 14:10

I would call the supermarket and explain. They probably won’t bother coming to collect it. The admin, the time, the risk of contamination means they can’t sell it anyway. It’s probably not worth their while. At least you’ll not be worrying about what might happen though.

2Sensitive · 07/11/2024 14:10

I'm not sure I could do this. I think it would come back to bite you in some form or another.
If I ever did do it, I certainly wouldn't be telling any one on a forum where they eat you alive.

JustWicked · 07/11/2024 14:10

Ponter · 07/11/2024 13:53

i don’t know how it happened. I rang the morning of the delivery as I could no longer do it on the app as it was too close to the delivery. So rang up. Saw that it showed up as cancelled on my app. And the van still showed up. This was 9 days ago.

Got the refund.

Similar happened to a friend (where I got idea) and she told me they never found out.

So you did this with the aim of getting a free shop.

You can dance around it as much as you like, but you are here boasting that you are so clever and look what you got away with

Ponter · 07/11/2024 14:09

Onthesideofthespiders · 07/11/2024 14:04

I wouldn’t. I live rurally and we have very limited options for food shop deliveries and I wouldn’t want to be banned from one! It’s just not a nice way to behave though.

I wouldn't. I could have stolen someone else's shopping the last time I did online delivery because the driver was new and gave me a container of things that weren't mine. He was really appreciative that I was honest about it which I found quite odd at the time, but maybe others would have stolen the food and he would have got in trouble. Didn't even occur to me.

sillygoof · 07/11/2024 14:08

Would you just wheel a shopping trolley full of stuff out of the supermarket without paying for it? You’ve knowingly stolen all that stuff. Disgusting.

corlan · 07/11/2024 14:07

It's not a victimless crime - we all end up paying higher prices to subsidise the people that steal off supermarkets.
You're not just robbing the rich, you're robbing the poor as well.

Not unless the issue is picked up by the supermarket.

It hopefully will be.

Folk like you are what's wrong with the world

This. Our local Morrisons has taken to locking alcohol behind glass doors because of the incidence of shoplifting. You’re worse, you couldn’t even be arsed to go to the shop!

The rest of us have to pay for your dishonesty.

I'd be tempted but my conscience would get the better of me and I wouldn't do it.

GeorgeMichaelsCat · 07/11/2024 14:06

I certainly would not.

RunningForMySanity · 07/11/2024 14:06

Nah I don’t think I could do that. If it was a random item they put in by accident or something like that but this one is a bit more than that and sounds more deliberate on your side.
I once had it that the supermarket called me to say they couldn’t deliver last minute and I was quite annoyed so they immediately sent me a £10 voucher compensation. Later, they called again to say they actually could fit us in and did deliver. I used that voucher code on my next shop but still felt a bit guilty 🤣 I’d not be able to cope with the guilt of stealing an entire shop!

CheekySwan · 07/11/2024 14:05

I would have kept it but probably thought payment would have gone through. I'd have called if it hadn't

We have takeaways delivered to us sometimes that aren't ours, had about 5 this year, answer the door, they don't say anything and just hand us food, there are 5 of us in my house and whoever answers the door presume someone else has ordered it, it has our address on a plaque right next to the front door. The takeaways though all come in generic packaging so we can't even call the company that sent them to tell them.
