Where is Kamala?

Just saw this post on X, and I tend to agree...

"Kamala lost as she campaigned - a coward who couldn't face the media, couldn't handle the pressure. Didn't even have the character required to concede on election night. Went home to sulk. The opposite of presidential material."

Really and truly was there nobody with any substance the Democrats could have put forward. What on earth did they expect. The bar was so low.

I wonder do any of them have post election regret

Sandygoldenbeaches · 06/11/2024 22:33

I miss Kamala.

Seriously? Just have a little think about what the scumbag who has won did four years ago - invite a riot which led to deaths.

Taking time to compose a response is fine. Encouraging a bunch of morons to storm the Capitol was not.

R053 · 06/11/2024 22:27

What a classy, dignified concession speech.

I liked that the past 4 years was relatively quiet in the US, compared to the chaos before that which ended with the riot on Capitol Hill with gallows for Pence!

capitanaamerica · 06/11/2024 22:25

My state had its results for the Presidential race declared DURING VP Harris's speech (that's AP; most of the other outlets still have it in play) so I say she was exactly on time. Results of our Senate race and House races are still undeclared. Other states are still outstanding.

What matters in the USA is that the losing candidate for the Presidency calls the winning one and concedes when it becomes clear that critical mass has been reached (this is always an estimate, because electoral votes are not yet officially committed) IN THE PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION; that already happened. You can quibble about the timing if you want, but there isn't really a precedent on that. As for her disappointing her supporters by not speaking last night, even just to say she wouldn't speak until today - I'm not going to say that no one was disappointed because everyone's an individual, but what she did - having someone else say she would speak later - is totally normal and uncontroversial in this context.

You also have to understand that in the USA, unlike the UK, the political parties who are NOT the party of government don't have a leader. Right now, Biden leads the Dems and Trump leads the Republicans; Harris has no official standing and so what she said in this speech was incredibly important. It is her one chance to speak and wrap this up. Given the things I have seen today I think her supporters were in the main happy to give her the time to get it right.

I've been in the UK for several general elections, and the systems just don't compare. If people need a UK touchpoint, I'd say a Presidential race is NOT like a General Election, where each seat has its results officially announced with every candidate standing by and speaking where appropriate, and the number of seats won adds up mathematically to who becomes PM (or, rarely, who has first shot at forming a coalition). If a comparison is needed, I'd say the US Presidential vote is more like a referendum in the UK, or parts of it. I was there too for both the Brexit and Scottish Independence referendums, and frankly I thought both were conceded too soon, without enough scrutiny, and perhaps with not as much thought put into the speeches as I would have expected. That's not a criticism of the UK (or Scotland), just a reminder that things are done differently in different places.

I think that Harris's speech comforted those it was meant to comfort, and inspired those it was meant to inspire. If that's not you and you're still sore about it, then maybe take it as a reminder that not absolutely everything ever is about you and only you.

Apolloneuro · 06/11/2024 22:24

I thought she gave a brave, eloquent speech. I can’t believe the country has elected that vile man. Even for cheaper fuel or to lessen immigration, it’s not worth doing a deal with the devil.

They usually call to congratulate the winner, wonder if she has managed to do this

Yes, she has.

Trump is some fool

"Went home to sulk. The opposite of presidential material."

The person who said this must have no sense of irony whatsoever.

Exactly

ThatRareUmberJoker · 06/11/2024 22:19

She didn't stand a chance the Democrats should have planned Bidens retirement earlier. He was forgetting names and places. She's a woman and let's not forget how religious America is. There was no way she was going to win. She tried but she didn't stand a chance if they had a young man stand against Trump he would have been toast. The Democrats did it to themselves.

She’s cooked. She’s never coming back now. Will just fade into irrelevancy.

Perhaps, but let the poor woman have a cup of tea and a sit down before she decides her future.

HARRIS HAD to say what she said and NOT question the vote! 😂 NOT because she was more graceful or whatever, but because:

  1. this election, BOTH the POPULAR vote as WELL as the ELECTORAL vote went to Trump by a great WIDE margin THIS election. When Trump lost to Biden four years ago, it was by so slim a margin Trump and many Americans thought something was wrong because Biden tried for years to become President, and just wasn't a leader material TOTALLY political career - and in fact he had many bad moments in his political career; and 2) This campaign the Dems USED Trump's questioning Biden's win in 2020 against him, and the Jan 6 riot, to try to WHIP up enough votes, but it didn't work! The Dems do not realize, how the people who were at the riot were PUNISHED far beyond what all Americans felt they should have been punished. That punishment of flag waving AMERICANS coming DURING the time BLM rioters burned, terrorized, and pillaged for MONTHS and NO ONE punished those rioters. It was unjust punishment and that turned the stomachs of many Americans.

Just for the record, many, many BLM rioters were punished, some very severely. Not that two wrongs make a right.

Well I'll remember her.

And she said she's fighting a long fight.

Trump lost in 2020 and he came back

OppsUpsSide · 06/11/2024 22:14

I wanted her to come out earlier in recognition of her supporters and say something. The idea she needed hours to ‘compose’ herself just seems belittling to female politicians.

LadyGabriella · 06/11/2024 22:13

Sandygoldenbeaches · 06/11/2024 22:10

People are entitled to their feelings when they see a really intelligent woman go, and an oaf in power.

I'll say more

Even just her saying that it's important to accept the result, as that's what a democracy is,

Really got to me,

As that's so different to what Trump said when he lost.

She's so much more advanced

We watched a few minutes of GB News last night (I think it was), and JRM was hosting(!). His two guests both absolutely despised Trump and wanted Kamala to win, and one was Kelvin Mackenzie!

StillAtTheRestaurant · 06/11/2024 22:11

I'm absolutely gutted for her, but the truth is she'll have a much nicer life not being President.

She made a dignified, gracious and hopeful speech and will ensure a peaceful transfer of power.
The differences between her and Trump could not be more noticeable.

Yeah she is very eloquent.

Because it’s just so unnecessary to perpetuate the nastiness and bitterness. I used to be that person too and it’s totally counterproductive.

I agree. So many ill- informed posts like the OP’s just looking to goad and get a reaction. So depressingly predictable, and, as you say, counterproductive.

Sandygoldenbeaches · 06/11/2024 22:10

The number of voters that cared about his offences, LGBT issues,

Can you clarify what LGBT issues you mean?

Issues that concerned the LGBT community - that the right and culture war types painted as 'woke'.
Trump and his odious campaign recognised that these could be marginalised.
