I happen to agree with you, @Another2Cats, and may have given the wrong impression in my previous post

The "Oh dear" wasn't so much an objection to the concept, more a reflection on the brouhaha it would cause among extreme liberals

Further to my post about Tom Homan, the new "border czar", reportedly he was asked how illegal immigrants could be deported without splitting up the family

"The families can be deported together" he repiled

It'll appeal to many, but oh dear ...

Why is it such a big thing if a family is split up due to a parent committing an offence? If somebody commits a serious offence then the family already gets split up anyway.

If a man or woman commits an offence and is sentenced to prison then they go to prison and the family gets split up - they don't send the children to jail with the father or mother.

Likewise, if a man or woman goes to the USA illegally and later has children. The parent is punished for their crime but not the children.

If both parents are illegal immigrants then they can choose to take their children with them if they like. The children (as US citizens) will be able to return whenever they want to.

Otherwise they’d be in the foster system so it’s preferable they go with their parents.

Hopefully birthright citizenship will end, however, so it will no longer be an issue

My 57yrs old son, ex British Army soldier, married to an American wife, told me that neither of them were feeling positive about the successful result for President-elect Donald Trump. Their family members in the USA, on both Democratic and Republican party sides were also feeling rather mixed.
Personally, I'm not thrilled by the result.

I agree. I work with children. I see the abject poverty and the widening and obscene inequality and vote for change. Regardless of my personal circumstances.

My point is that you do not actually know what they need or what will fix their problems.

I hear a lot of American liberals complain about the poor and how ‘they vote against their own interests!’ But it’s a bit of a leap to think you know what would be in their best interests.

It's a very individualistic society, so voters think of themselves first

Of course they do! Voting is your direct voice in the political process, you’d be foolish to think of other people (or believe that you are, when you have no idea) instead of your own family and particular circumstances.

It goes well beyond just individual circumstances though, RingoJuice

As I mentioned on another thread plenty of Americans are utterly sick of being expected to pay for everyone else's problems and then being snarled at for their pains, and rightly or wrongly that lends Trump a certain appeal

I've just been reading about the appointment of the very experienced Tom Homan ... good luck to anyone still hoping for liberal border policies now, but that's what the majority voted for so that's what they've got

I'm enjoying seeing all the left liberals melting . Hopefully this is a start to embolden other countries to get back to common sense and kick all this woke , gender identity cr@p into the long grass . The tide is turning .

Because hatred misogyny and bigotry is such a good look for the world and we so missed it.
Let's go backwards. Great idea.
More Trumpers showing their true colours. It wasn't the economy. That's a useful smokescreen for their true motive - they just want to get at minority groups they personally don't like. Which is why all their gloating has a threatening edge. Get on our side...or else.

Not foolish. Recognising the fact that a more equal society has benefits, not all financial, so voting for that. Or being someone who is happy as part of a society which cares for its members. You are categorising anything other than voting for more money in your own pocket as being both against your own 8nterest and foolish. It’s neither.

Honestly his opinion on the matter is irrelevant since it’s a state matter now. All we need to know is that he won’t sign an abortion ban, said he wasn’t gonna do it and lost voters based on his statement. Do you really think someone like Trump actually cares about abortion that much?

Oh, well if Trump says he won't then no worries. After all, if there's one thing Trump is known for it's his honesty and keeping his promises.

We'll just ignore the fact that literally his first cabinet appointment was one of the project 2025 authors.

There is evidence of Russia creating divisive content and posts on SM to create division. No idea about this forum in particular but I can’t imagine it’s immune.

Definitely not immune.

The sort of posters who used to get accused of being Russian bots were those which explained things from the Russian/other countries' point of view. They seem to have disappeared from MN almost completely now.

In terms of division, our problems are to do with policy - governance, funding etc. Who is influencing policy, do you think?

They don’t post Russian points of view. They create posts designed to create division. Putin wants to destabilise the West. It’s sadly working. We are a divided nation and we need to be United.

I am not convinced that there are any R bots here at all. I am not sure that posters from within Russia have access, as we never see them on just normal threads. There are almost no posts which reflect Russian points of view here, in contrast to youtube where there are countless youtubers from Russia. There are almost no posters from the rest of the world posting much about Russia either. So I really doubt the whole Russian bot thing, I think that that was used to shut down discussion back in the day.

What I have noticed, however, is a group of posters who will quickly congregate on certain threads and basically take over, either by posting huge chunks of text one after another or by joining together as a group to attack other posters. They appear in relation to certain issues. But are they paid to do so, and if so, who by? I really have no idea. Who knows.

I swear most of the posters on here are plants, just sent to stir up publicity, chatter and rage-baiting. It happens with every election cycle. New posters appear with inflammatory threads and comments, hang around for a few weeks and then are never seen again.

ItIsBeginingToLookLike · 10/11/2024 11:28

Yet abortion barely figured as a point of interest in the exit polls. In the swing states, about 11 per of people said it was the most important issue (climate change came in even lower, at 7 per cent).

Most USA women don't care about abortion for themselves and aren't interested in that access, they are clearly content with those into abortion moving to Blue states and living their utopia there. Abortion is a minority issue.

It's a very individualistic society, so voters think of themselves first. They would sooner moan about high petrol prices (even though they are currently lower than when Bush was president) than care about vulnerable people.

I'm enjoying it too! The lefties have left.

Leaving only the vicious and hateful. Very comfortable I'm sure.

izimbra · 10/11/2024 16:29

"Honestly his opinion on the matter is irrelevant since it’s a state matter now."

Lol - all you read on this issue is Republican propaganda and Trump apologism.

You're working on the assumption that Project 2025 was nothing to do with Trump, has no bearing on the next administration and that there are no plans to further restrict abortion at a federal level and in blue states.

You're wrong.

cardibach · 10/11/2024 16:25

I think he cares about it when a woman he’s slept with needs one.
I have no faith in anything he says, so him saying he won’t ban it makes no odds.

izimbra · 10/11/2024 16:24

Trump has been ambiguous about this issue in every way. It's a political strategy and women will pay the price with their health and their freedom. They already are.

He knew the overturn of Roe vs Wade would result in millions upon millions of women losing the right to abortion. He celebrated that.

RingoJuice · 10/11/2024 16:23

izimbra · 10/11/2024 16:17

So Trump congratulating himself for the overturning of Roe vs Wade which has had a major impact on women's access to reproductive care across half of the USA - which he knew would be the outcome - and previous comments about women being imprisoned for abortions, is consistent with his support for all American women to be able to access timely reproductive care should they need it?

Honestly his opinion on the matter is irrelevant since it’s a state matter now. All we need to know is that he won’t sign an abortion ban, said he wasn’t gonna do it and lost voters based on his statement. Do you really think someone like Trump actually cares about abortion that much?

OonaStubbs · 10/11/2024 16:22

If people were that bothered about the overturning of Roe vs Wade, why did Trump just win the election quite comfortably?
