I don’t think for a minute that everyone voting for Trump agrees with his ideals. Of course a large number do, but for a lot of them I think it’s a combination of two things:

  1. People being so disenfranchised that they simply want to vote for the “chaos candidate” - the person who sounds as angry with “the system” as they feel.
  2. People just not being engaged with politics. They have busy lives, they don’t have time to wade through details. It’s sad, but a fact, that most people don’t care about politics.

Dominic Sandbrook summed the second part up well this morning:

We have to stop demonising “the other side”. Do I like Trump, absolutely not. Do I think his supporters are all stupid/racist/sexist/etc, absolutely not. Until we can start to look at why so many people are so disengaged with politics and address, or at the very least listen, to each others concerns, we only set things up for the Trumps of the future.

Edited

I agree with this.

The Dems also shoot themselves in the foot with the constant celebrity endorsements. There's nothing more irritating than an incredibly wealthy, privileged celeb lecturing you on who to vote for when you're working all hours to pay bills and feed your family while crime is out of control and you get 2 weeks off a year to go on a holiday you probably can't afford. These issues don't affect celebrities in the same way. It was the same when Hilary lost. Trump tapped into the forgotten Americans. They want money in the pockets and not to be robbed going to their work. Issues like abortion take a back seat (unfortunately).

What's wrong with you?

Canadian here. What? You think Canadians are quaking in fear of MAID? I know people who are terrified at the thought of suffering through terminal cancer, but nobody who’s afraid of MAID.

My comment got deleted, so just to reiterate that he's a dangerous fuckwit and this thread seems disingenuous.

Don't care if this gets deleted again either. Shit stirring bullshit needs calling out.

Their older children must feel scared each time they get sick or have an accident, that they will be sent to Canada and given MAID.

What's wrong with you?

Women can have a cesarean to deliver the baby.

Having a cesarean solves none of the problems in the post you’re replying to. What a completely ill informed comment to make, especially in such a flippant manner.

Alphaalga · 06/11/2024 18:21

Unreasonable isn't the right adjective for those who keep looking further right for solutions to problems caused by the right.

SerenityNowSerenityNow · 06/11/2024 18:20

He obviously says what he thinks, what you see is what you get. Ideally people would stop insulting him 24/7 then he wouldn't respond in the same way.

I still don't think that's appropriate behaviour for someone in a senior position or position of power. I certainly couldn't (and shouldn't) behave like this and expect to be respected professionally.

Also, what about the comments that are not a response to an insult? Particularly ones that are inappropriate towards women?

I saw a man on twitter/x say that if his teenage daughter was raped and became pregnant then he would want her to have the baby because it is "what jesus would want". Sickening

So depressing.

The more evidence of his utter unsuitability you give them, the more they double down.

They don't support him in spite of his racism, bigotry, misogyny, cruelty etc, they support him because of all these things. He appeals to the worst parts of human nature and he makes them feel good about themselves.

Exactly you rarely see anyone who is kind, nice and sensible voted in as a leader anywhere.

The bad side is stronger and more manipulative, so bad people keep voting in bad, brash, nasty people as leaders.

nomorehocuspocus · 06/11/2024 17:47

What kind of blithering idiot do you have to be to vote for a psychopathic, racist, bigoted, misogynistic, egotistical, crooked, lying, bullying, dangerous megalomaniac?

Who believes in full-term abortion? Later term abortions are normally due to fetal abnormalities that are incompatible with life. No-one is advocating for full-term abortions for non-medical reasons.

However, the more draconian the abortion laws are, the more likely it is that if a woman has to travel to another state or another country, the more advanced her pregnancy will be.

@Deja321 which is kind of under if you're 5.

Not if you're the president of the United States

Puzzledandpissedoff · 06/11/2024 18:12

It hardly makes any difference now, but his flipping of Michigan has just been confirmed

With him also ahead in remaining Arizona, Nevada and Alaska, it looks as if the projection of 300+ electoral college seats is going to be right

SerenityNowSerenityNow · 06/11/2024 18:11

*kind of understandable

CoatRack · 06/11/2024 16:38

You have no evidence that Trump has, or propagates, a 'low view of women'. And no, being against full-term abortion does not constitute sexism.

Vanishingly few of his supporters believe that he is a sexist or an abuser of women, ergo he is not validating anything like this to them.

Sandygoldenbeaches · 06/11/2024 18:10

To the posters who said that he "was just joking about sexual assault"

I wouldn't like to be near a man who even joked about it.

SerenityNowSerenityNow · 06/11/2024 18:09

Sandygoldenbeaches · 06/11/2024 18:09

Stop the earth I want to get off.

I'm sick of corrupt vile men ruling over us. And I'm sick of the women in the USA who also roll over and bow to these vile male leaders just because they are men

They'll vote a sexual offender in ,

Before they vote Kamala Harris in who has been:
A lawyer
A senator
A vice president

Deja321 · 06/11/2024 18:06

SerenityNowSerenityNow · 06/11/2024 17:56

Rosie o'donnell was horrible about Trump.
If I relentlessly insult a man I can't play victim when he insults me back just because I'm a woman..

And all the other women he has either insulted, reduced to their physical appearance alone, made lewd or sexist comments to? Are you going to justify those comments too?

Also he doesnt target women specifically to insult. He'll have a go back at anyone that insults him first, man or woman. And I think that's fair enough. I think considering the amount of abuse he gets he's been very reasonable.

Is it an issue if the ladies in question want it? As you know, some of these girls are seeking him out to grab them by the pussy!

If they consent to it with him, it's fine.

Donald trump bragged that he can just grab women by the pussy, that he has just met.

Several women have accused trump of grabbing their vaginas, and they didn't want it or consent to it at all.

SerenityNowSerenityNow · 06/11/2024 18:02

Is it an issue if the ladies in question want it? As you know, some of these girls are seeking him out to grab them by the pussy!

Fucking hell.

SerenityNowSerenityNow · 06/11/2024 18:01

If they've insulted him first yes. Can't take it, dont dish it out. He's been called horrible things and it's been constant.

Wow. Wouldn't you expect a president to be a bit more mature? Rather than acting like a 5 year old in a school playground?

Have you read the article I posted? So many of those comments were not in response to him being insulted. They are simply telling the world how he views women.
