BF views on Trump

Itsbeenalongtimee · 06/11/2024 08:47

Had a debate last night with bf about the US election before waking up to this morning's news. He has declared he is happy Trump has won. He has been clear he doesn't want any more kids. So I asked him what would happen if we lived in the US and I got pregnant with a baby he didn't want. His response was that we would just travel to another state for an abortion since it's state law not federal. We have been together for years but I wonder if this is the biggest red flag that you should run from that he supports this verdict?

Supporting Trump does make you a bad person.
The effects will be awful for the planet and many people and women especially.

Flyhigher · 07/11/2024 09:51

Supporting Trump isn't being a grown up.
It's gross stupidity and or selfishness.

Run run run.

If you were sexually assaulted, do you trust your boyfriend to believe you or would he consider it a smear?

Great question.

XChrome · 07/11/2024 04:08

How important are your political beliefs to you? Our political beliefs reflect our values. If he does not share your values, that is definitely a red flag for incompatibility. I could not be with a Trump supporter or any man who is dismissive of sexual assault. But the question is, how do you feel about the fact that he supports a rapist and is dismissive about rape? If it's a dealbreaker, break the deal. You have to decide what you can live with. I would think it would erode your trust in him to know he thinks so little of women.

You really need to accept that people can have different views to you and that doesn’t make them a bad person. It’s called being grown up

Although saying that, I’d be super suspicious of any man supporting Harris, Beta male would be the polite way of putting it

Well, that depends on the views, doesn’t it, obviously?

Bluedabadeeba · 07/11/2024 03:32

AddieLoggins2 · 06/11/2024 09:34

I couldn't be in relationship with a Trump supporter, but I guess it depends on how far your views differ from his.

I hate this idea that it's a 'difference of opinion' and that grown-ups can/should overcome it. For me at least, it's a hell of a lot more than just a difference of opinion, it's a difference of core moral values, and I couldn't be with someone, or raise children with someone, whose core values differed from mine that much.

Couldn't have said it better myself. 100%

poetryandwine · 06/11/2024 17:51

Come on, @hamstersarse : Keir or Kemi?

Circumferences · 06/11/2024 16:32

It's a bit of a myth that trump supports abortion, or introduced a "ban on abortion".

He didn't.

Ro Vs Wade was overturned while he was in office, which meant abortion laws were returned to state-by-state level.

If you agree with states being able to make their own laws according to the wishes of their population, then you agree with Trump.

No amount of sulking or complaining will change the fact that actually, a LOT of Americans are personally opposed to abortion.

Quite a lot of people agree with all those things though. Quite a lot of people will be happy about it all. I’m happy about quite a few of them, I’m worried about NATO, not Ukraine. Ukraine was never going to win it was always going to be a negotiated settlement.

For sure. But whether people approve of them or not, they are still direct impacts of Trump’s win, whereas the OP said they wouldn’t face any.

I agree with this.

Obviously it's fine for people to have a different political view to me. But in my relationship, I'd want someone who I have shared values with. I

MrsSunshine2b · 06/11/2024 14:59

Supporting Trump would be a red line for me even for a friend. Someone who supports Trump has no values or morals in common with me.

EsmeSusanOgg · 06/11/2024 13:38

I could not be with a Trump supporter. Not because I cannot have different political opinions to a partner or friend, but because everyone has red lines.

I cannot support people who are actively anti-abortion (not talking what they would personally do, but wanting to legislate others rights away). I cannot support people who support certain right wing views. Nor homophobia, misogyny, and racism.

I can get on with, and debate with, those who share differing opinions on the economy/ taxes/ EU membership/ NATO/ UN. Even to a degree immigration (but not where it is obviously purely racist). I can agree to disagree on religion, philosophy, parenting styles etc.

But there are some things that I have no common ground with. A relationship (friendship, or romantic) is not obligatory. If you are fundamentally opposed on key, core beliefs, it is totally reasonable to walk away.

MrSeptember · 06/11/2024 13:36

For me, what it comes down to though is what does it say about people who are happy to have a man who has proven to have the ethics of a dead alley cat in power? That for me is the issue. I can cope like a grown up with different opinions on all sorts of things, not least because I think most of us genuinely want the world to be a better place, we just have different views on what that looks like. But I can't get my head around being okay with someone so craven, so dishonest, so awful to other people as the "leader" of the free world.

And both DH and I have spent this morning feeling heartbroken that so many people just don't care about that.

AncientAndModern1 · 06/11/2024 13:34

I wouldn’t have anything to with a man who admires a racist conman and rapist.

i agree with others who have said it’s about values, not opinions. Anyone voting for Trump would not share my values, and I wouldn’t want a deep relationship with them.

And you’re wrong, I think, to say Trump’s election won’t affect you directly - climate change, the cost of supporting Ukraine, encouraging the likes of Farage, moving the Tories to the right, the impact of his tariffs on the British economy, and more will all have direct impacts for all of us.

Quite a lot of people agree with all those things though. Quite a lot of people will be happy about it all. I’m happy about quite a few of them, I’m worried about NATO, not Ukraine. Ukraine was never going to win it was always going to be a negotiated settlement.

This really isn't true. Small issues like traffic fines and details of laws are for the states but larger important issues are on the federal level. Overall Americans are pro choice but anti-abortion measures are forced through by some state governments.

P s. It's "Roe"

You can say it’s not as much as you like but this is the fundamental difference between America and the UK. This is and always was a states issue. It’s now back with the states where they wanted it. Now many states, not all have guaranteed abortion access. Many have removed it. That’s their choice whatever you think.

People are allowed to have different political views ti yourself, I
And you don't live in America ,so the abortion argument is pointless.

thats literally how the US works. States are effectively different countries with far less decided at federal level than state. Thats how their country works, I dunno if it is better or worse. The point of Ross Vs Wade is that it's a state choice, not a federal choice, and therefore many many states now have it in their laws to guarantee abortion rights, others have removed it al together. thats who Americans are. 50 different countries trying to stick together.

Break up with him. The only red flag I can see in this situation is you. You can't change someones views. Either stay with him and respect that he has his own mind and opinions or move on so he can be with someone less controlling

herecomesautumn · 06/11/2024 11:41

It's about shared values

I couldn't be with a partner that thought that disgusting buffoon was fit to be a leader

Foxblue · 06/11/2024 11:37

Ultimately, anyone supporting Trump is supporting a known sexual abuser.... there's nothing else to say, really is there? So they think rape is okay? I don't know what you really do with that information.

People who have the views that Trump has are bad people. It's not about having different views it's about being decent people with values like fairness, and honesty

Notreat · 06/11/2024 11:28

I couldn't live with anyone who supported Trump. I definitely couldn't love them because it says something about their values and they are completely opposite to mine
