Goodbye to any hope of peace and safety for the world, or saving the climate, women’s rights and ending racism.
Poor Ukraine will be the first casualty.
Putin will be breaking out the vodka and caviar today.

Yes. The same happened in 2016, and although he said some crazy stuff the world continued on. I don't think many brits understand US politics. I don't fully understand it but it's far more complicated than here.

Whilst I’m worried about what he might do, I agree with this. To back that up, we had Boris Johnson for 3 years (2019-22) and he was absolutely shit during Covid and took us all for fools, but we survived.

Despite the fact the Republicans have majority control over the Senate and the House of Representatives, and the judiciary, I don’t think Trump will make himself president for life. I don’t think he can - it will be hard for
him to do that because the US does still have a lot of checks and balances. It’s not like Russia, for example, where it was transitioning from the Soviet Union to a new political order and Putin took advantage of that fragility (and then took around 20 years to properly take all the power for himself, when he did his 2020 referendum to keep himself in power till 2036).

The point I’m trying to make is it takes a long time to seize absolute power in a country, and it is very hard to do in a reasonably healthy democracy like America. It’s nowhere near as fragile was when Putin took over in Russia (for example).

Also, Trump is old (78!!) He won’t be around forever. Yes, he might make himself ‘president for life’ and appoint someone like JD Vance as his successor for after his death, but I doubt that will happen, because I think there would be a massive national and international outcry and it would possibly lead to a civil war.

Have you not listended to him?

I have not heard anything that indicates that he will and can remove the democratic process in the USA. What exactly had he said that you think indicates he will and can?

StormingNorman · 06/11/2024 08:43

Yes to all of that.

Although what scares me more than anything is that the way trump has changed how politics done in America is an existential threat to democracy in the most powerful country in the world.

How has Trump changed how politics is done in America? During his last time in office, I don’t think he changed how politics was actually handled. The only thing I can think of that he did was make a speech that called on people to march on the Capitol. Was there anything else you were thinking of too?

Don't be ridiculous how bad was it last time?

Things don't usually get that bad overnight. Last time DID have terrible long-term consequences, only fully seen after his term had ended, due to the 3 right-wing nuts he put on the Supreme Court. Which also means that there'll be less restraint on his actions from the judiciary.

Easy to sacrifice other’s sons while strutting around playing the hero.
Reuters too are saying how he’s scratching around for men to fight for his cause- The Ukrainian men don’t want to die for his cause .

Sounds like Russian propaganda to me

Aria999 · 06/11/2024 21:35

given they got trump, well says it all really about the effectiveness of the democracy process

Not really. The difference between democracy and other ways of doing things is that if leaders are unpopular then they can be removed without armed conflict.

No system would always pick a good leader.

‘Many forms of Government have been tried, and will be tried in this world of sin and woe. No one pretends that democracy is perfect or all-wise. Indeed it has been said that democracy is the worst form of Government except for all those other forms that have been tried from time to time.…’

In terms of Ukraine, the news in general in the USA is very insular that I don’t think many Americans will have much idea about what’s happening or why.

I agree he’ll probably pull support saying he wants to put money back into the US economy rather than giving it away and people will see it as a positive rather than seeing the bigger picture that peace in Europe is something we should all support.

And what happens if the interests of the experts don't align with everyone else's?

Absent democracy, then the person in power is usually someone who has a lot of fighters and weapons and is ruthless enough to use them.

I think Hitler might have made it anyway.

then you have democracy, and the usa gets trump ? seems there needs to be a better way or method

Francis Underwood: "Democracy is so overrated."

@ForPearlViper what's to stop Elon Musk from running? I'm not knowledgeable enough about American politics to know why.

The US president must be BORN in the US. Musk was born in South Africa.

besides what if changing democracy as a way presidents are chosen is a good thing, especially if some point there's a president like eg frank underwood that gains power ?

Fascism. Theocracy. Misogyny.

Oh, you read their blurb! You could at least read a wiki page to try and grasp the ramifications of it. It is horrifying.

But then so is having a convicted felon, rapist, sexual abuser of multiple women and minors, inciter of insurrection, who despises and mocks his followers, who supports a theocracy for his own personal gain, who has said under him there will be no more elections, and who has teamed up with several other billionaires and dictators, currently raping the world, as the leader of the free world.

you have democracy to thank for your current president
