ExH brought his dog in my house without permission

ExH just dropped off his dog in my house. For me to look after, even though i had said no to looking after him. The dc let Exh and dog in when i was out. They love that dog and of course had no knowledge of anything.

ExH is gone now for two weeks. Abroad. He just walked out and took off to the airport, leaving dog behind.

I've got two dc and two cats and work long hours. The cats have never spent a night/day alone in the house with this dog. He is kind and mellow, but a large breed. Size of a wolf.
I've contacted a dog shelter and might have to go to go through rspca.

Posting to tell someone. This is just one of many many ways he always finds a way to use me or control my life. I didn't want any of this. And now im left here calling shelters (which im asked to pay for), calling womens aid, calling rspca, figuring out how to do this without upsetting the dc, texting exH to sort out care if he doesn't want me to take this further, posting here for support, trying to figure out tomorrow with sorting out the kids, my work, other stuff, business meeting and my actual day job. Honestly?! Wtf!!!

I'd put it in kennels for the 2 weeks, our you don't pay until it's picked up. Should be availability since it's just after half term. I'd at least try that before taking it to the pound poor thing

My betting is they won't.
They do take sick or injured stray animals - I once took in a cat found at the side of a road who had been hit by a car.

The vets took him in because he was at risk of dying {clinical shock from internal injuries and broken bones} - this cat's owners were traced and they paid for all the vet treatment.

They aren't going to have free kennel space for a healthy dog, and would definitely want payment for it.

She tells them it's the ex's, he's liable. Walk in, say it's 'x' s dog', walk out. They're not going to be chasing her down the street as she does a runner!

Thelnebriati · 05/11/2024 21:36

This thread is becoming a bit bonkers. Dogs are property as well as living creatures, and there are laws concerning their care, ownership and abandonment.

You can't lawfully turn someone else's dog loose on the street, tie it up outside a boarding kennels, book it into boarding kennels, sell it or have it put to sleep. OP doesn't need to be prosecuted on top of being harassed by a POS ex who is very obviously using the dog to increase his own victim status and make her look deranged.
You have to go through long winded and tedious procedures. Its a PITA for everyone involved including the dog. Being outraged about that doesn't change anything.

How does OP have a key to her ex’s house?

Kids do.

If she takes it to the vet, tells them it’s not hers, they’re very likely to take it.

What a stupid and insensitive comment.

It’s a dog not an object. A living breathing animal and should not be sold off to any Tom Dick or Harry.

Obviously the OP’s Ex is being totally unreasonable and should have booked a dog sitter or a stay in Kennels as soon as the holiday was booked.

The best thing for the OP to do is to find a local kennels that has space and send an invoice to her Ex. Not selling the dog off FFS.

The OP has said she can't afford kennels.

CfCfCftooMuch · 05/11/2024 21:33

I dont have the dogs vaccination history or vet details. I don't know anyone wanting to exchange free boarding for dogsitting, but that is a good idea. Maybe i can ask around. Its shitty that this is now on ME to use my energy on.

Tell him the dog is back in his house, you will take kids round to put food & water in. If he has a secure back garden, let it out to do its business, otherwise it will be home alone until he sorts something more suitable out. You would be providing the basics to keep it alive (food, water, shelter). When it wrecks his house & shits everywhere, that’s on him, you’ve warned him 🤷🏼‍♀️
Dont enter into any discussions or bartering, just repeat what you’ve done & it’s his problem to solve.

Dont risk keeping it at your house, the cats are likely to leave home & find somewhere else.

This. Except I wouldn't tell him I'd let it out to toilet. If he wants anything more than food and water (hopefully there is more than 3 days food for the dog in his house) he can fucking well sort his own pet sitter or come home.

Be as dull and repetitive as you can. The dog is in his house and won't be getting anything more then food and water from you. His shit (literally) to sort out. Don't get drawn or guilt tripped. This is the situation. The dog's welfare is back in his hands as of right now.

Worst case scenario the dog doesn't get a walk for two weeks. Is it fair in the dog? No, but nor is it animal cruelty from OP of she has firmly and explicitly in writing TOLD the wanker that she's handing the dog's walks and company needs back to him, the dog's owner.

If OP doesn't stand up and refuse this, the wanker is going to have yet again won and will continue.

Awful to leave a dog alone for two weeks. Just awful.

Yep, poor dog to have such a shitty owner. Hopefully he will get a dog sitter.

DeliciousApples · 05/11/2024 21:32

His key rescue is a good shout. Tell them the truth. That the dog has been dumped on you. Hopefully they will help. And also persuade ex on his return that leaving dogs alone for nine hours a day is fucking cruel and get him to sign it over to them. Yup. Defo try them.

oakleaffy · 05/11/2024 21:17

Vets won't take it, it's not an ill animal.

If it's in a house without food and water the RSPCA WILL intervene, but ti leave an animal without food and water is criminally cruel and they would rightly prosecute.

If the dog has food and water, they deem that to be 'sufficient' {Only know this as many people including me tried to report a yard chained dog that was never ever allowed off his chain, year after year.

If the dog has food and water, and rudimentary shelter, that's all that{ legally }matters, according to RSPCA.

They cannot seize the animal.

Edited

This is accurate.

It's worth understanding the RSPCA doesn't actually have any legal power to seize animals without the owner's consent, they can only do so with police support and permission which means the bar for seizure is high - the conditions an animal is in has to be literally illegal, not just less than ideal. Unfortunately there's a wide range of scenarios that are not great for the animal but not technically in breach of the law.

It'll likely howl the house down with loneliness- neighbours could well phone the dog warden then- I agree with PP- he has done a cunt move on OP, dumping a dog on her kids without enough food to last for two weeks, knowing she works and has cats.

No one will ''house sit'' without payment, either.

Depends...I don't know anyone who's been paid for house sitting (I've seen the websites for house sitters, though), but I know plenty who would pay low rent for a house with some pet care, and feel lucky to do it for free. For example students, or freelancers, or people living alone in small flats or bedsits.

Thewolvesarerunningagain · 05/11/2024 21:29

oakleaffy · 05/11/2024 21:22

Do you really think that someone with so little care for his animal would bother with vaccinations? - Bet that poor dog hasn't been wormed or vaccinated in its life.

Most loving dog owners can't bear to leave their dog behind when they go on holiday.

Or, if they do, they pay for a good service, not dump it with an ex wife without food when she works all day long and has cats.

Edited

@oakleaffy absolutely, couldnt agree more. But kennels won't accept the dog without proof of vaccination, payment or otherwise, as it contravenes their insurance. If the OP can't demonstrate this then advising her to look into kennels, as others have done, is a time suck that she doesn't have resources for and she's best off looking at alternatives

GreyBlackLove · 05/11/2024 21:27

How many of you have found a kennel happy to take a pet with no proof of agreement to pay from the owner, no payment upfront and no card details on file...as well as no vaccination or medical history? I've honestly never come across a business willing to operate that way.

Stormyweatheroutthere · 05/11/2024 21:27

Find some random you vaguely know. Offer them free board and lodgings if they ddog sit at exes house...

oakleaffy · 05/11/2024 21:27

AllYearsAround · 05/11/2024 21:25

Definitely sounds like the best thing is to leave the dog at his house and go round with the kids after school/work each day to let it out for a run around in the garden and top up food and water.

OP you have some very kind animal lovers on this thread that sound like they would love to care for the dog for two weeks. Find one nearby, problem solved 😬

Just book it into kennels and he can pay when he gets back. I don't see why the dig should suffer just because your ex is a twat.

What kennels are going to take a random dog at no notice, with no history, and no payment?

MsTeatime · 05/11/2024 21:25

To those saying a vet won't take it, my partner and I found a dog running lost off lead one day. Clearly frightened. Looked for it's owner but no sign of them so we took it to the vets so they could scan it's microchip. We offered to keep it at our house until they could find the owner but they were willing to take it in. Just tell a vet you found it and no owner in sight, can they scan it's chip if there's no dog warden near you. How old are your kids though? I'd be really cross with mine if they'd let someone dump a dog on me without asking.
