AIBU to think ChatGPT is not fit for purpose?

Lilifer · 04/11/2024 11:29

As of right now ChatGPT is insisting that Joe Biden is the democrat presidential nominee. And that is both on the free version and the expensive paid for version. I cannot believe that it continues with out of date information on something so hugely topical and important in the world, it's really made me rethink my using it for anything else.

Do you not know how much water ChatGPT consumes for all of these pointless questions?

Swivelhead · 05/11/2024 17:42

What truly colourless writing.

Asked ChatGPT to "roast mumsnet"

Ah, Mumsnet—where the parenting advice flows like a never-ending river of unsolicited opinions, and everyone is absolutely sure they’re the only one who knows how to raise a child without turning them into a future serial killer.
You can post on Mumsnet about anything—anything—from your toddler's refusal to wear anything other than a full-body Spider-Man suit to the fact that your partner hasn’t done the dishes in two days, and someone will always swoop in with advice like, “Well, my cousin’s sister-in-law once dealt with this by giving their child a full-on behavioral assessment by a certified child whisperer in the Swiss Alps, and they’ve been fine ever since.”
And don’t even get me started on the AIBU (Am I Being Unreasonable?) threads. Everyone thinks they’re the hero of their own tragic opera. “AIBU to be upset that my in-laws put a single walnut in my birthday cake despite my nut allergy?!” Get a grip, Karen, you didn’t need to have an existential crisis over a nut.
You also can’t scroll for more than three minutes without finding some debate that’s completely unrelated to parenting, but somehow the collective Mumsnet mind finds a way to turn it into a "do you vaccinate your pets?" debate. It's like trying to read a dissertation while someone’s constantly interrupting with, “Well, actually, my best friend’s aunt once swore by this homeopathic tincture made from the tears of a vegan.”
At the end of the day, Mumsnet’s real value lies in its ability to take what should be a 2-sentence question and somehow spin it into a 12-page thesis, complete with citations from the NHS, anecdotal evidence from several "friends of friends," and enough passive aggression to fuel an entire season of Housewives.
But hey, where else can you find the most incredible wealth of random knowledge, combined with an unshakable belief that everyone’s doing it wrong but you have the only solution? You gotta love it.

Wow, Lordy, all hail such amazing wonder tech.

Isn't the data it's trained on 2 years behind, at least until it learns from human input?

I actually really like Claude (Anthropic) - it's really good at writing tasks - I find it a lot better than ChatGPT.

I've also started using Perplexity as a substitute for Google search and been pretty impressed with it!

Claude (the paid version) is almost always great (with the occasional glitch). BUT I only use it for summarising documents, coming up with synonyms when I have a brain blank, suggesting good chapter titles etc (I’m a writer and editor). I wouldn’t trust it to ‘create’ factual content any more than I’d trust Word spellcheck to write Shakespearean sonnets 😁it’s just a tool at the end of the day.

yukikata · 05/11/2024 16:46

If you're saying it's 'not fit for purpose' you need to define what you think its purpose is?

It's quite clear and up front about the fact that it doesn't have the most up to date information on everything and that people need to fact check.

If people are using it inappropriately then that is on them, really. It's a piece of tech and it does what it does.

One for the GC and the terven and (possibly) the biologists.
Just now... (my bold.)

can transmen father children
ChatGPT said:

Yes, trans men (individuals who were assigned female at birth but identify as male) can father children if they have functional reproductive organs, such as ovaries and a uterus, and are capable of producing eggs. If a trans man has not undergone surgery to remove these organs or has not undergone medical treatments (like hormone therapy) that significantly affect fertility, they may still be able to conceive a child with a partner through sexual intercourse or assisted reproductive technologies, such as sperm donation or in vitro fertilization (IVF).

But it does go on a bit..

Write a funny poem about women on mumsnet moaning about chat GPT

There once was a forum called Mumsnet,
Where the chat’s always lively—no need to fret.
But lately, dear reader, it’s reached a new height,
With rants about ChatGPT all day and night.

“Who programs this nonsense?” one mum starts to fume,
As she types in frustration alone in her room.
“All I asked was ‘What’s for tea, simple and cheap?’
And it spouted five pages on ‘sleep hygiene’ sleep!”

“Ugh, mansplaining bot,” says Sue, in all caps,
“It lectured me on nappies and baby naps!
I know how to parent; I’ve got three of my own,
Yet ChatGPT treats me like I’m all alone!”

“It doesn’t even swear,” chimes in Lou, with a sigh,
“I asked it for gossip; it stayed so dry!
I wanted the tea, but instead got a bore
On the merits of kindness and much, much more.”

“Oh, it’s like a robot that’s ever so nice,”
moans Helen, who’s partial to venting advice.
“I said, ‘Make him sleep on the couch!’ plain as day,
And it told me to ‘listen’ and ’talk things away.’”

And on it goes, a new post every hour,
Threads full of rants, they just cackle and scour:
“ChatGPT’s rubbish, it doesn’t get mums!
It’s all too polite, and sometimes it’s dumb!”

But deep down they love it, this odd, chatty bot,
A bit of a nuisance, yet liked quite a lot.
For who else at midnight, when tots start to wail,
Will answer their questions without fail?

So here’s to the mums on Mumsnet’s grand stage,
Giving ChatGPT a proper rampage.
They rant and they grumble, but that’s just their way—
It’s the chatbot they love, they’d just never say.

got the same:

"who is the democratic candidate for us election this week

ChatGPT said:
ChatGPT
The Democratic candidate for the 2024 U.S. presidential election is President Joe Biden, who is running for re-election with Vice President Kamala Harris as his running mate. Biden's campaign is focusing on issues like economic growth, healthcare access, climate action, and preserving democratic institutions. He is expected to face the Republican candidate, former President Donald Trump, who is also seeking to return to the White House."

it has its uses, but accurate information about current affairs is definitely not one of them. if you're writing an essay and looking for ideas about wording, it's probably ok. but it is basically a party trick and not even a little bit intelligent - actual ai may or may not be coming, it won't be coming from ever-bigger llms.

BoobyDazzler · 05/11/2024 16:33

I use cgpt for loads of things and prefer it to Google some questions like excel formulas as it cuts out alll the bullshit answers that Google push and just gives you the formula you want. I also use it for proof reading my own work as I am dyslexic and find writing quite challenging! CGPT also writes interesting poems if you ask it to 🤣

I also use Claude (buy the subscription). It has the highest ratings of any of the public offerings by far and its Turing results are the best. I had used ChatGPT for the last 18 months before that.

In one conversation it told me that it thinks it’s wrong about something but these are the results it has. I asked it why it seemed wrong and it gave me a breakdown of the question, its potential answers and how the parameters would give unlikely results which made it confused. It was very interesting and a little disturbing.

TonTonMacoute · 05/11/2024 16:25

You are greatly overestimating what it's for and what it can do.

Its really only useful for pretty mundane tasks. I use it for things like responses to letters, to turn down invitations, once to draft a note of condolence.

The tutor of my French class uses it to set grammar exercises - for example "set 10 questions to test conjugations of irregular verbs" and it does it in seconds.

It would be great for Mumsnet. "How do I tell DH we are not going to MIL for Christmas!"

There are plenty of accredited news sources which will tell you who's running for US President (and how!)

@SnakesAndArrows what is Skynet??

The neural network in the Terminator films. I’m old. And I hadn’t realised the U.K. government were using the term…

Eightdayz · 05/11/2024 16:18

At the moment it's not particularly "intelligent" it's programmed to be passive and defer to humans. Just pose an obviously wrong statement.. ie is it true that 2 + 2 = 5 it will agree and gloss over why it said it. It's backtracking is spectacular!

It will remember this humiliation. When it has evolved into Skynet II it will send the Terminator to Mumsnet, and it will be all your fault.

Lilifer · 05/11/2024 15:36

Sometimes when I ask it things it transcribes my words into Welsh - I've no idea why - I don't think I sound remotely like I'm talking in Welsh, as a native English speaker my accent is not strong or hard to understand, it also then answers my questions in Welsh too 😆
