Friend asking for dog food 'compensation'

What do you make of this.

One of my school mum friends, (I'll call her Mary) has a dog and we often bump into each other out for dog walks and walk along together. Not super close, but chatty and friendly

Last week Mary told me she had been let down by a dog sitter for a holiday. She couldn't find anyone so I offered to help. Our dogs get on well and I'm used to having more than one, although at the moment only have one. She asked how much I'd charge but I said no bother just provide his usual food and treats, which she did. Her dogs food is a superior top end brand to the food I give mine.

All was great whilst we had him, but when feeding, the dogs seemed to favour each others food and swapped between bowls. I didn't think too much of it but did mention it to one of the other mums at the school gates in a jokey way, saying my dog obviously preferred the more expensive brand to the supermarket stuff I provided. Whereas her dog really liked the cheaper stuff.

Mary has obviously been told and today asked me if I fed my dog her dogs food. I was a bit taken aback but explained the above and of course I did give her dog its own food but sometimes dogs want what the other dog has.

She was very cold and told me to compensate her for any tins I gave my dog as she wasn't there to provide for my animal! I'm totally bemused, I saved her £100's in dog sitting fees and although I'm not now going to charge her she must see she is totally unfair.

Or am I wrong and should I buy a pack of 4 tins to give her. My DH says ignore but I don't want bad feeling.

She’s being a total arse, but why on earth were you “joking” at the school gates about your dog eating the more expensive food?
She probably thinks you were taking the piss.

Totally agree, some things you just keep to yourself. It's obviously wound her up but she's a CF wanting any money.

She should tell her to take it off the £40 a night fee she would have paid.

LookItsMeAgain · 07/11/2024 17:55

@dogbiscuitsareforlife - The fact that she hasn't tried to reach out to you so far after her demands to be reimbursed for the dog food speaks volumes to me at least. I think she still wants to be reimbursed. She could have shouted out to you, called your name today and asked you to stop to discuss the situation. She didn't.

When you see her tomorrow, at the very least be prepared for one of two situations - she either doubles down on the demand to be compensated for the dog food (and you have your reply ready for that) or she apologises and realises what a cheeky fucker she was to suggest it (and you have your reply ready for that scenario too).

If she still wants compensation, you have the reply of actually wanting to talk to her about how much she owes you for dog sitting and you can provide her with with your details so that she can transfer the money to you as you are standing there. If she realises what an eejit she has been, then you can say "Well, Mary, I did wonder. It seems like such a simple thing for us to be falling out over. I'm glad that we can put this behind us now", plus you can always refuse to look after her dog in the future saying "I'd rather not Mary - you know how you were the last time looking for compensation for dog food so you'll have to find someone else to do it or pay a kennel to do it, but the boarding house of "Dog Biscuits Are For Life" is fully booked!" or something like that.

Liv999 · 07/11/2024 17:34

No way would I buy her the tins, she's a CF for asking after you doing her a favour like that and not asking for anything in return, tell her you won't be buying any food or doing her any more favours either

CheekyHobson · 07/11/2024 17:29

Honestly cannot understand all the people saying they'd give her the tins as some kind of courtesy!

The most courtesy I'd show her would be not telling her where she could shove her tins!

Rosscameasdoody · 07/11/2024 17:27

I’d give her the tins back but I’d make it clear how petty I thought it was considering how much it would have cost her for a sitter, which I’d done for free. I would have thought she’d be glad OP got a little something out of it if she hadn’t charged her and had stepped up at short notice. I’d also make it clear not to ask again.

azlazee1 · 07/11/2024 17:15

I'd give her what she wants and never ever be available to help her out again. Did you mention the free boarding you provided???

Seaweed42 · 07/11/2024 17:08

"hopefully she'll realise I'm upset over something"
She might not.

Perhaps you didn't really want to mind her dog, but you sometimes find it hard to say No to people. You find yourself agreeing before you know it.

If that's the case a handy trick is whenever anyone asks you to do something say 'can I get back to about that?'

CheekyHobson · 07/11/2024 17:05

"Mary, I looked after your dog for free for days, saving you tens if not hundreds of pounds, so I am quite shocked that you demanded I reimburse you for food your dog ate of its own accord. I won't be giving you any money, and to be honest, I think you owe me an apology if you'd like our friendship to continue."

MsPavlichenko · 07/11/2024 17:05

Why be so passive aggressive? Why do you want to involve others?

Message and calmly point out how you helped her, and in doing so saved her costs. Explain that because of that you’re surprised at her asking for food to be replaced. Suggest you both let it go. If it were me, I’d not offer to help again.

I saw her out on dog walk yesterday but avoided her and walked a different way. I know she saw me and sort of stopped and stared at me for a while. Hopefully she'll realise I'm upset over something.

I won't be at school until tomorrow so still deciding whether to hand over tins or not.

This is just childish and you’re dragging it out.

Orangeoranges42 · 07/11/2024 17:04

you need to be honest with her and say youve saved her a fortune along with that’s exactly how you’d have treated them if your dog had the more expensive food and hers took a fancy to it.

Shes being ridiculous and I think it needs pointing out. We can’t let these sort of people just carry on.

Mrssmith3 · 07/11/2024 16:52

Recently I had a pet sitter £35 a night which I thought was cheap. I would message friend with an invoice for your care. Whoever the mutual friend that gossiped was. Is not your friend. You did the dog friend a massive favour. She is ridiculous if she thinks you did it to give your dogs a nice meal!!

I'd be telling her to fuck off. Simple as that.

Yep, sometimes the best solutions are the simplest.

This is so passive-aggressive. Use your words like an adult.

Isobel201 · 07/11/2024 16:46

I'm a little late to the party, but unless the dog wasn't able to eat any other food without feeling ill, and tbh she should have said if the dog needed feeding separately, then she hasn't got a leg to stand on.

Do NOT give her any tins, She’s a cheeky fucker!

This ⬆️⬆️ with bells on.

LivinInYourBigGlassHouseWithAView · 07/11/2024 16:35

I would pointedly not be carrying ANYTHING when you see her tomorrow.
If she dares to ask for 'reimbursement' again, I'd calmly tell her she can deduct it from the kennel charges she owes you, especially when you took on her pet for her on such short notice.

How will she realise? Is she mystic meg?

I can't wait for tomorrows update!

Me too - I really want OP to sock it to her - some of the suggestions have been fab!

MyNewCat · 07/11/2024 13:52

She really is a CF.

I understand that you may not want any confrontation, so I would send her a text that says something along the lines of

Hi Mary, I fed our dogs at the same time & they ate each others food a few times, it's not a big deal, they all do this from time to time.

I'm not going to be re-imbersing you any dog food - you seem to have forgotten that I looked after Fido for you at no cost, saving you lots of money on sitter fees & I won't make myself out of pocket for doing you a favour.

I don't want there to be any bad feeling between us, so lets say no more about it & move on.

This is a perfect response - calm and to the point.

Dollshousedolly · 07/11/2024 16:03

I wouldn't do any drama of handing over tins at the school. Instead I'd either phone her or send a message and say very simply, you are stunned that she'd asked for two tins of food back when you had taken care of her dog while she was away.
