Personally I find them very tedious as I have a toddler.

Sigh.

I like properly organised events, but 100 random garden displays really wind me up! The noise!

And how do we teach livestock and horses to cope with the noise when they can't hide inside?

How do we teach people with PTSD to cope with the banging? I've been reduced to tears today with the banging which took me right back to being hit by a car a few weeks ago. I'm certainly not the only person with PTSD who will be terrified.

Fireworks should be limited to 5th November and New year. I am absolutely fed up of it, it gets worse wach year, weddings all summer long also.

Greyrockin · 03/11/2024 20:20

Where i am they start at 1.30pm, while it's still light. They've been going on for days and nights up until around 1:30am, it's incessant.

Patienceinshortsupply · 03/11/2024 20:19

I had all of my grandchildren to stay last night as DD was on a night shift. I'd just got the last one to sleep at 10.30pm (bedtime started at 6.30pm) and then some fucker let a load of fireworks off waking up the youngest back up and giving me another hour of soothing.

If I'd have known who it was I'd have sat outside their house at 2am blasting my car horn and shouting hurrah over and over.

sweeneytoddsrazor · 03/11/2024 20:17

We have sold far less fireworks this year than we have in the last 10 years. Not sure if its due to COL or people moving away from garden party to organised displays or probably a combination of both.

JollyPinkFox · 03/11/2024 20:17

It’s not fun anymore when it’s constant. I love fireworks, always go to the real display, I don’t love hearing bangs in local gardens for weeks on end. Until I moved NW I hadn’t experienced this either so perhaps those defending it don’t realise how irritating it is in the parts of the country where it’s weeks on end of it.

Some people thrive on sucking the fun out of everything

You are totally right .

We should bring back dog fighting. Loads of fun for the humans and only the animals that suffered. Ditto animals in circuses. Fun for all the family!

Fireworks are not FUN for everyone. Certainly not for most animals.

You're not the only person with a toddler.

I personally think fireworks should be banned for individual purchase, and official displays should be limited to Nov 5th, the nearest Saturday, and New Year's Eve.

But it'll never happen. Why? Money. Same reason the government won't ban smoking.

Don't ever move to east Sussex then

pizzaHeart · 03/11/2024 20:10

I’m up North I didn’t know we had so many Hindus around…

I don’t have babies and animals but I’m against individual fireworks in principle. There are lots of organised displays, not expensive and fun why add more stress for environment?

HecatesBees · 03/11/2024 20:10

ShowOfHands · 03/11/2024 19:12

We went to an organised display on Friday and somebody let off their own fireworks which went into the crowd, burning BIL and several others, including a child.

I just don't think the general public can be trusted with easy access to explosives.

Wow! What a bunch of arseholes

I'd support a ban on selling to the general public

Are the government making money from fireworks though....?

You know MN

… moaning about Halloween (Trick or Treat /begging)
….moan about Fireworks (my poor cat .. that’s spent all year shitting in your garden)
…moan about Christmas (in-laws mainly)

and then a bit of a break until Easter moaning .. with a hundred “nobody made a fuss of my birthday” “my proposal wasn’t good enough” inbetween.

This made me laugh

notanothernamechange24 · 03/11/2024 20:02

@Justcallmebebes so because you personally haven't known anyone or any pets die that makes them ok? 🙄 Right o! Why does something personally have to affect you for you to open your mind to the possibility it might affect others?

buffyspikefaith · 03/11/2024 19:58

Hate them
Never used to until I had to redecorate my living room after one was put through the window

People who don't mind them probably don't live in an area where teenagers throw them at police, or into a car with a sleeping tiny baby, or into the shops or care home

notanothernamechange24 · 03/11/2024 19:58

They should be banned. There is zero good reason why the public should have access to explosives.

The son of one of my care clients ended up in hospital last night because he thought he was having a heart attack. It was a nasty panic attack brought on by the stress of 3 nights back to back fireworks.
He has severe PTSD from his service in the forces.

Organised displays - fine. But they should not be in the hands of the public

LikeWhoUsesTypewritersAnyway · 03/11/2024 19:52

Thing is @Justcallmebebes and @Ytcsghisn and other posters supporting fireworks in peoples gardens! Fireworks are WAY louder now than they used to be. (10+ years ago.)

My older cat died 2 years ago aged 18, and she was terrified of the loud bangs. My one cat I have left (17 y.o.) is 80% deaf so isn't bothered about them, but next door's dog is terrified of the massive big bangs.

Luckily we are quite rural and it's a middle class area, so very few houses have fireworks in their gardens. Organised displays are OK as people know when they are and can sedate their pets/animals, but fireworks should NOT be sold to the general public. The public buying them should be consigned to the history books.

.

Do people like you genuinely believe it’s ok to put ‘fun’ (of which there are a thousand alternative ways to achieve it) above the well being of millions of pets and wild animals?

Humans really are the pits.

YES. We've had fireworks on bonfire night for generations and then more recently for Diwali. Not known a pet to die as a result, ever

Ytcsghisn · 03/11/2024 19:38

SabrinaCarpentersCeilingFan · 03/11/2024 19:35

Yes yes to the cats shitting in the garden 😂

Every ounce of celebration is sucked the life out of on MN.

They don't open the door to the outside world as they're so scared of getting off their arses to hand a bag of haribo out.
Easter is full of chocolate and their 8 year old hasn't been exposed to sugar yet so they can't have a bit of Easter egg.
Christmas is lowkey and quiet as nobody wants a fuss. Who wants spoilt kids?
The wedding invitation is an absolute no no because their kids haven't been invited and can't bear to be away from their pre teens for one night. Never ever inconvenience themselves for a wedding.

Then cry when they got a milk tray and a card for their birthday.

Yeah but MN is special. Full of kind, special human beings. Each one a gift to mankind because of their virtues. Not letting off fireworks is one of those virtues.

Flowers

In all seriousness, home firework displays need to be binned. Organised displays only, and several weeks warning, so people can sedate their pets/animals - including farmers animals if need be.

Good on people having a good time enjoying fireworks.

I wish they'd finish at 2200 tonight

People have to go to work to tomorrow, I think that's when it becomes annoying
