These children are about 8-13 years old. Some are siblings. They are running in the middle of the cul de sac.

What age should children stop screaming iyho?

There’s a kids near me that shrieks all day long. There are a few of them that play together but it’s literally just this one girl you can hear making the most noise. She seems incapable of speaking normally. “POPPY COME HERE LETS DO THIS” drives me up the wall because her parents just let her shout and they never try to say shhh stop shouting

Livelovebehappy · 03/11/2024 15:43

That’s one of the advantages of Winter coming up. Hopefully the cold and wintry conditions will drive them off the streets and indoors. That’s usually the case…

Balletdreamer · 03/11/2024 15:38

My neighbours grandchildren are screamers. And I mean all the time. I often wonder why their throats don’t bloody hurt as it’s constant. But the neighbours never say a word. Maybe they’re just glad they aren’t doing it in the house.

HalloweenHaribo · 03/11/2024 15:35

My kids always played outside and got plenty of fresh air and exercise.

Were they allowed to keep screaming?

NO.

They'd get warned and then if they carried on, they'd have to come in for time out.

It worked quite well.

Even though what you say utterly hilarious and totally original, it's not about children simply PLAYING. It's about the shrill and unnecessary SHRIEKING and screaming and squealing that some children do these days.

Coupled with the fact that some parents don't seem to give a flying fuck about the fact that their children are disrupting people lives/peace/right to quiet enjoyment in their own home, it's making people miserable.

Some parents don't give a shit what their child is doing as long as they're not near them. 'Let someone else deal with them' is the motto of some parents these days.

Honestly, people should be forced - by law - to go on a 2 year course before they ever produce any children!

Just like a lot of gormless parents mistake ear-splitting screams for the 'normal loud noises that children make when playing outside'.

Or we just ignore it because we know it winds the neighbours up 😂

TheThreeCheesesOfTheApocalypse44 · 03/11/2024 15:07

Dd and I were sat outside a pub a while ago having a drink (( pub by a canal lock, not a beer garden )) and there were a group of teenage girls doing this really OTT screeching and hollering, just being obnoxiously loud. I think they were trying to impress some older lads sat further down.

I was mid sip of my drink when the most ear shattering scream made me shout out without thinking ' what the hell do you think you're doing you absolute idiots ?Do everyone including yourselves a favour and Shut up ! '

I can't decide what was more glorious, the look of horror on dds face, the look on the girls faces as they at least had the decency to look embarrassed or the lads who'd been trying to ignore them pissing themselves laughing.

And no, everybody did not clap. But they bloody well should have done.

Actual screaming is, I agree, not on but I do think a lot of adults interpret normal loud noises that children make when playing outside as 'screaming'..

Surely it’s nice they’re outside in playing together instead of being stuck in front of the tv?

If you (and MrsTerryPratchett) think those are the only two options, you shouldn't be parents.

Screaming is not normal. Loud playing is fine. It doesn't grate like that shrill, blood-curdling screaming that some parents refuse to shush.

Sadly it is. I switched from an office job to be a gardener in 2009. My first commercial job was in an old folks home, built on the site of the local primary school that had moved to a new building next door. First Monday play time I almost grabbed my fork and jumped the fence into the school field thinking some terrorist attack was taking place.

when I was at primary school in the 1970s we were brought in should anyone scream

AegonT · 03/11/2024 14:57

Kids seem to scream a lot now. It is very annoying. Mine are not allowed to randomly scream and get corrected if I can hear them. If they are unreasonably loud in the garden they get a gentle warning, a more serious warning then are brought inside!

Plamas · 03/11/2024 14:56

This thread is hilarious.

CaptainCabinetsTrappedInCabinets · 03/11/2024 14:55

I do not allow my children to scream either inside or outside and never have. I cannot and will not put up with it.

The parents 4 doors down however......

PermanentlyTired03 · 03/11/2024 14:55

We had neighbours that used to have screamy children. So annoying.
I was always told not to scream unless I was in danger, and I say to my daughter not to be screamy as we have neighbours and frankly they don’t want to hear it. Yes children should play and be loud outside, but screaming is bloody awful!

CarpetShampoo · 03/11/2024 14:51

My parents explained to us that screaming was only for serious emergencies like being assaulted/ kidnapped or at risk of serious injury or death. Followed by an explanation based on the story of the boy who cried wolf. We played out all the time with the neighbouring kids, round the houses and local countryside. Always encouraged to be out from under the adults' feet, there wasn't much to do in the house. Screaming isn't necessary to have fun.

100% this. I wouldn't ever respond to a child we know if I heard her screaming outside cos she never stops. Which Is bad because it could place her in danger. She's 10 btw.

Funnywonder · 03/11/2024 14:40

Are they really screaming? Is it constant or just the odd shriek? Sometimes what people describe as screaming sounds like normal play to me. Albeit a bit on the loud side. But that's usually a fluctuating thing. I like to hear children playing out.

curtaintwitcher78 · 03/11/2024 14:32

It's not an either/or situation. It's not like if they don't scream all day they have to sit inside on screens. They could play out, they could even shout very loudly, but if they start actually screaming the street down, their parents could maybe entertain the idea of asking them to stop.
My friend's daughter is 2. Sometimes she gets over excited and does a really piercing scream. All it takes is a "No screaming darling" or "Can we bring that down a bit?" and she stops. I doubt she'll be calling Childline about the curtailing of her freedoms when she's older.
