Fed up of children running around screaming

These children are about 8-13 years old. Some are siblings. They are running in the middle of the cul de sac.

What age should children stop screaming iyho?

Better than sat indoors on screens.

It’s not a binary choice.

greengreyblue · 03/11/2024 17:34

Chn shouldn’t scream excessively unless they are on a ride or actually scared. I was always told not to make excessive noise when playing outside so as not to upset neighbours . I think that’s right and is only good manners. Nobody should purposely affect other people’s enjoyment of their space.
I also think that when chn or teens do this it’s a bit ‘Boy who cried wolf’ and means when someone actually needs help, they will be ignored.

I'm not suggesting time travel. I'm just making the point that refusal to tolerate other adult intervention is a relatively new phenomenon.
We were also taught how to protect ourselves from predators, and knew well the difference between obeying Mr Jones when he yelled at us to get off his lawn and obeying him if he told us to get into his van.

Well obviously not as abuse of the time thrived because children were told to obey adults.

Your comment about knowing not to get in the van is victim blaming and pure ignorant of SA victims. I suggest you get better informed. As a SA survivor victim blaming us horrendously hurtful even over forty years later.

Notyouthful · 03/11/2024 17:30

A friend told some screaming kids that only babies scream. That shut them up

Yes but now it isn't tolerated. You can't time travel. Give some of the ridiculous nonsense I read on here, .children kicking a ball, bouncing in a trampoline etc, only at certain times due to adults working art home 🤦‍♀️.

People are ridiculously intolerant of childhood while still expecting full-time working parents to manage to supervise all the time.

Which is ridiculously detrimental to children's development. And no mine aren't running around screaming.

People don't parent with fear, we don't raise children to listen to strangers directions. We do this to give them better protection from predators and quite frankly barking mad adults!

I will take my children's protection over inconvenient noise 🤷‍♀️. Loops help the noise.

I don't know whether children were better behaved in the 80s, but there was certainly a much higher tolerance for the 'interference' of other adults. It was an everyday occurance for neighbours and even strangers to tell us off back then. And for much less than screaming. A good thing too in some ways as many a scrape was prevented by some random adult shouting 'get off that wall!' or similar.

Absolutely this, we weren’t necessarily better behaved, much worse in a lot of instances but we were more afraid of authority and any adults were viewed as such. Often got a chase or telling off from a random neighbour 🤣🤣

Absolutely!
We were told off by neighbours if we were loud.
Shamefully there was an adult with learning difficulties on the street that we ( a group of young kids) once imitated.

Her mother absolutely rightfully roundly told us off and said if we EVER did it again, she’d be telling our parents.

We were frightened of our parents being told and ashamed, and apologised.

oakleaffy · 03/11/2024 16:37

Some screech like the steam train whistles in “ Night of the Demon”.

Regardless society doesn't tolerate interference.

I think people are ridiculously rose tinted on children of the 00/90/80s.

Bad behaviour was just as prevalent then as now. However people refer to their upbringing and not the overall behaviour of children.

Find yourself a nice retirement village?

@Mosalahiwoukd

Dint be so rude.

im fine with the kids playing out in the street, its nice to see them.

i am fine with the noise they make playing, shouting, screaming a bit during play (getting caught/surprised) im fine with the shouting & arguing.

what I am NOT happy with is when they just stand and scream, and scream & scream trying to out do each other

@Notyouthful depends what type of 'screaming'

Mimiconvos · 03/11/2024 16:24

loud boisterous play is perfectly acceptable, the odd screech here and there also acceptable. However just screaming would be nipped in the bud straight away here, they would be told to zip it by one of the parents/neighbours/whoever is about wether they are your child or not 🤣

Rewis · 03/11/2024 16:20

Our neighbour stopped around 10. It was miserable for quite a few summers. Thankfully the parents were willing to move the trampline to the otherside and it became bearable. But yeah, after 10 he stopped screaming.

BarkLife · 03/11/2024 16:20

I was at a party last weekend and two girls began screaming really loudly. AuDHD DS1 (nearly 12) absolutely freaked out and wanted to leave immediately.

Please teach your kids that screaming is inappropriate behaviour and can really frighten children with sensory needs.

YellowAsteroid · 03/11/2024 16:19

I can remember as a child the only time my mother got very cross with us was when we screamed , but we’re not seriously hurt or in danger.

Adults are programmed to jump into action when they hear screams, especially those of children. Children need to be taught not to scream unless there really is an emergency.

My neighbourhood is a cul de sac. Kids often play out there and in the gardens, I like hearing them play.

However a couple of weeks ago in one of the gardens a child kept screaming, so I leant out my home office window and shouted "stop screaming"...it worked Grin

The reality is you do not tell others children what they can or can not do.

So if you aren't in control of the situation you can control your reaction. So I would advise ignore. What exactly do you see a positive outcome if you get involved?

If others’ children are behaving badly and parents not stepping in if absolutely tell them what to do - politely but firmly. Any human being impacted by others has the right to speak up!

i always thought mn was a bit precious about children playing until i visited a different part of town and the children were shrieking. I’ve got 3 dc and have never experienced anything like it. Therefore, if they’re shrieking that much, I sympathise with the op. Normal dc playing is different.

BeMintBee · 03/11/2024 16:11

I swapped out family cul de sac for what appears to be a mini retirement village. Apart from hedge trimmers early doors for an hour on a Saturday it’s bliss.

I sat down for coffee in a practically empty garden centre cafe the other day and mum with 3 kids all giddy, squealing and loaded with iPads sat at the next table. She was most affronted when I got up straight away and moved as sat away as possible. Not remotely interested in or tolerant of squealing children.

Screamingabdabz · 03/11/2024 16:07

I hate kids screaming, I always gave mine a bollocking when they did it but a very lovely friend of mine used to say “it’s just excitement.” She had a completely different view. She saw it as a sign her kids were enjoying themselves. I still think it’s out of control and unnecessary noise. And inconsiderate to anyone within earshot. YANBU.

Dweetfidilove · 03/11/2024 16:03

I HATE screaming, but my heart smiles listening to the kids outside shrieking with delight, scooting up and down.

I really can't begrudge children having some fun, especially now that it gets dark early and they'll be locked inside soon.

Gives their parents a break too, so win win.

twentysevendresses · 03/11/2024 15:59

I get this OP! It's really annoying when children LITERALLY scream as they run around. There's no need! I'm a primary teacher and we are constantly telling the children that there's no need to scream at each other (and I do mean scream...this is not just 'happy, playful, excited' voices...it's ACTUAL non-stop, uncalled for screaming!)

I bloody LOVE hearing children playing...it's one of life's pleasures, listening to little ones having fun. But this ridiculous screaming is not fun for anyone! It's not 'playing'...it's instead of playing, when they don't know what playing is, so they just scream at each other 🤦‍♀️😱😖

If you have 'a screamer' please stop them!
