To ask you to pray for Valencia - Spain floods aftermath

I have been an on-and-off Mumsnetter for years, I’m Valencian, and haven’t seen a thread until now about what is happening in Spain.

The situation is dire. For those unaware of what has happened, I urge you to read about it. On Tuesday 29 October, large areas west and south of the city of Valencia suffered the deadliest flash floods ever recorded in the country. Ever since that night, we live in a constant nightmare. I am one of the lucky ones whose town was not damaged. My family is alive. It was a terrifying night and many people survived by climbing on to their roofs, cars, or trees. Some of our neighbours took 2 days to come back home after sleeping on a lorry, the roof of a gas station, I could go on.

215 deaths have been reported so far. The real number is much, much higher. Water came all of a sudden and caught thousands of people out in the streets, shopping, driving back from work. A year’s worth of rain fell in just a few minutes, and towns downstream were flash-flooded out of nowhere. The emergency alert came in at 8:15pm, by which point hundreds of people had already been dragged by the water and killed. None of us saw this coming, I was at work until 7:45pm and made it back totally unaware just because I happen to live on the other side of the river. We were not warned that this amount of water was coming.

The destruction has been immense. Whole neighbourhoods wiped out. Roads are blocked, railways unusable, thousands of cars and lorries were dragged by the water and now block streets and access routes to the city itself (which is unaffected due to the river being diverted after the floods in 1957).

The worst of it is that there are still thousands of missing people. They estimate 2000, but it could be higher. Many towns and villages still don’t have running water, electricity, phone signal, and their roads are totally inaccessible so nobody knows what has happened to their inhabitants.

The amount of mud everywhere is terrifying. People don’t have clean water or food, access to toilets, many are still unable to come out of their homes due to mud and car piles blocking their streets. People have lost everything - their homes, cars, businesses and belongings.

Corpses are found all the time inside cars in garages, parking lots, floating away in the streams… It is gruesome. The conditions are unhygienic. The mayor of one town has said they have hundreds of cars at the bottom of the hill still buried in the mud, and none of their presumed occupants have been seen or heard of since the flood. This is a real tragedy. It is not being reported properly outside of Spain from what I can see.

The regional government is fighting with the national government over who needs to pull the trigger and involve bigger agencies and resources in the recovery of this area. I won’t go into the details, it’s shameful.

Help has come late and not in enough quantities - the Valencian people have walked over the bridge to the damaged side of the river for days now, with buckets, spades, brooms and cleaning supplies, and they are cleaning the streets. All the furniture inside damaged homes needs to be thrown away. People are collecting incredible amounts of food, water, sanitary and baby products, and the police is finally organising supply routes to most towns. It’s the citizens of the region who are doing the heavy lifting right now.

The Army apparently came in yesterday. Let’s hope they stay for longer than a week. Thousands of people are missing. We need proper machines to pump out water from garages and streets. Some villages are still to see the Emergency Military Unit (UME) who is meant to clear bodies, bring food and water and start repairs. Nobody is helping these people, roads are too damaged for cars to drive there, it’s too far to walk.

I have been unable to help physically this weekend due to caring responsibilities. Tomorrow morning I will be going in to sweep mud out of homes, and hope the infestation in the affected towns (from a lack of sewage and clean water systems) doesn’t make us all ill. But we can’t just stay at home.

I ask that you please pray for the Valencian region. We are due heavy rainfall again tonight. We can’t cope with even more water. If you are not religious, please send your good thoughts over to Spain. We are too busy and too traumatised to protest to the government right now. The response has been appalling, and it’s the community coming together and cleaning the streets by hand, one by one, that will end up rebuilding the area. Pray that aid reaches the cut-off towns. That people can call their loved ones and find out they are well. That this nightmare ends soon. Sorry for the very long post, but this needs to be known more widely.

My thoughts are with everyone there. I will pray for you all at Evensong tonight.

Can there be improved flood defences or even defences if there isn't any. Although I know a lot was caused by rock hard ground. I live in a city in the UK with a big tidal barrier which has saved us from big flooding. The reason it was put in was because of massive floods 10/15 years ago.

MainStreetOrHighStreet · 03/11/2024 16:39

The people coming to harangue the king, how does the monarchy work in Spain? Does he have any role in the way governments and councils are run, or is he like the UK king, where it’s primarily opening things and being seen?

Youvebeenframed · 03/11/2024 16:29

It’s absolutely biblical again now 💦☔️🥺

@Fizbosshoes what could have been done differently is international cooperation to treat climate change as an emergency years ago and to coordinate disaster planning and also do war-style changes to our lifestyles. We didn't want to change and the world's systems worship money above life and our natural interconnection. There wiĺl more of these disasters, not once in a lifetime but the new normal. The super rich won't care as long as they have their escape plans and little havens.

Also, this.

In Spain they’re now talking about “when” it happens again, not if. Which means that these events will become much more frequent, just like wildfires in summer…

I don't mean this unkindly but practically what could have been done differently, beforehand?

This will be an important lesson for everyone to learn, I hope. I wish the warning had come earlier. It was already raining heavily at 1pm, and the national weather office had the whole region on red alert. No indications were given as to how to deal with it. Everyone went to work, took the kids to school, went shopping… Thinking it would just be heavy rain.

At 5-6pm the motorways were flooding - and water was starting to flow through the towns. Nothing was said. At 6pm we were told at work to minimise use of lifts, that’s it. With hindsight, they should’ve told everyone to go home, but many lives were also saved by us waiting until 8pm - by that point, it was so bad, there was no way of getting on to some roads, so people actually avoided being swept by the currents. There needs to be better education on how to deal with emergencies - even after the alert, many workers report they were not allowed to leave their shifts to go home, they spent the night on the roofs of shops and factories (which probably also saved their lives).

In comparison with this, today there is a red alert in Almería. People have been told to stay at home, not use their cars unless absolutely necessary, and to go to the upper floors if water starts entering the property. People are listening - they’ve been given clear instructions. It was not like this in Valencia - nobody was asked to take any precautions until it was too late. An hour after hundreds of people were already gone. How did they miss it?

It’s absolutely awful and I feel for everyone there and anyone who has family or friends there.

It’s one of the scariest things that can happen and it happens so fast that there’s little abyone can do about it.

I can’t imagine being away from my child/family and then not knowing what’s happened to them/what’s happened to me.

I’m shocked how late the help came and it would have absolutely caused many fatalities.

I wish there was something I can do to help physically.
Good for you, for going to help clear the mud etc.

Cocolapew · 03/11/2024 15:42

It's just horrendous, I think its being under reported when you compare it to the hurricane heading for Florida a few weeks ago, it was everywhere.

Fizbosshoes · 03/11/2024 15:33

We have just been on holiday in Spain and it's been reported every day on the bbc, since it happened, we were watching over there.

It sounds horrendous and it's unbearable to think how many people may yet be discovered and the grief for the friends and family. And the devastation caused to homes and businesses.

I don't mean this unkindly but practically what could have been done differently, beforehand? A years worth of rain falling in a matter of hours is unprecedented and not something any country could easily prepare or make plans for. Or is it about not giving early warnings about the incoming storm? So people could potentially change their plans or leave the area if feasible. (In the USA they seem to frequently have hurricanes but there are usually warnings for people to leave their homes in the areas they anticipate to be worst hit)

But the immediate rescue response does not sound like it has been organised well at all by those in authority and this must be heartbreaking and infuriating, for those awaiting help, or news of those missing. It sounds as if local communities are getting stuck in and doing all they can but I really hope you get a more robust response from those in power.

My neighbour went down to our underground garage to get his car and ended up abandoning it and only just got out. It is scary how quickly flood water can overwhelm you. Literally seconds. 😥

Yeah. When you watch it though it seems so slow doesn't it?

Whetherornotyoutry · 03/11/2024 15:17

IVFmumoftwo · 03/11/2024 15:11

I think from what I read many were driving in their cars or went down to garages to get their cars out before the water came and became trapped. I don't know if you have seen the pictures but there is so many cars in piles with people in them.

I’m not a praying person but I have been following and the people affected are certainly in my thoughts. The pictures I have seen are shocking.

but just now I have checked the main news websites and there is currently no coverage at all which is just terrible (though there most certainly has been ). Thank you for making more of us aware, I’ll also donate if there is a recommended charity.

we have had quite a few devastating floods I this country over the years but I don’t recall anything which such a horrific loss of life.

Pity isn't finate... you can have a heart and empathy for all those struggling.

Statistically more children are abused by husbands and fathers. The problem is any sort of patriarchy ime.

LastNight1Dreamt1WentToManderleyAgain · 03/11/2024 15:10

Praying. Are there any religious orders or churches doing charity work? In my experience they often work selflessly and very locally. Franciscans, Jesuits, St Vincent de Paul, Dominican, any others? Then we can look for their website.

I hope it will start being reported more widely soon. France offered to send 200 firefighters and Spain said thank you, but we are managing. They turned up anyway. I hope the leaders can unite soon and work together regardless of party politics, this country needs them united so that we can also coordinate with those who want to help abroad.

It has been reported on in the UK. I believe it was top news a few days ago.

And all I keep seeing on the news is trump Vs Harris. So bored of it. When there are more important issues such as this happening.

It has been reported as top news.

I think we all know what the OP means when she says when she says pray for Valencia. If you are not religious that is fine, but this isn’t really the time to air that view.

Waltdisnerd · 03/11/2024 14:55

Hardlyworking · 03/11/2024 14:43

YABU. Prayer is a completely useless made up thing with precisely zero benefit, except making the pray-er feel better about themselves.

I feel sorry for you.

Redlarge · 03/11/2024 14:52

It looked terrifying. I'm shocked at the lack of warnings too.

Blueblell · 03/11/2024 14:49

My thoughts are with the people of Valencia. I cannot believe it couldn’t be predicted to an extent, but I guess it was a very localised phenomenon. One thing that struck me in the news reports was the lack of emergency services on the scene. It sounds like the army is now getting involved and hope people are getting the support they need.
