To ask you to pray for Valencia - Spain floods aftermath

PrayForValencia · 03/11/2024 11:55

I have been an on-and-off Mumsnetter for years, I’m Valencian, and haven’t seen a thread until now about what is happening in Spain.

The situation is dire. For those unaware of what has happened, I urge you to read about it. On Tuesday 29 October, large areas west and south of the city of Valencia suffered the deadliest flash floods ever recorded in the country. Ever since that night, we live in a constant nightmare. I am one of the lucky ones whose town was not damaged. My family is alive. It was a terrifying night and many people survived by climbing on to their roofs, cars, or trees. Some of our neighbours took 2 days to come back home after sleeping on a lorry, the roof of a gas station, I could go on.

215 deaths have been reported so far. The real number is much, much higher. Water came all of a sudden and caught thousands of people out in the streets, shopping, driving back from work. A year’s worth of rain fell in just a few minutes, and towns downstream were flash-flooded out of nowhere. The emergency alert came in at 8:15pm, by which point hundreds of people had already been dragged by the water and killed. None of us saw this coming, I was at work until 7:45pm and made it back totally unaware just because I happen to live on the other side of the river. We were not warned that this amount of water was coming.

The destruction has been immense. Whole neighbourhoods wiped out. Roads are blocked, railways unusable, thousands of cars and lorries were dragged by the water and now block streets and access routes to the city itself (which is unaffected due to the river being diverted after the floods in 1957).

The worst of it is that there are still thousands of missing people. They estimate 2000, but it could be higher. Many towns and villages still don’t have running water, electricity, phone signal, and their roads are totally inaccessible so nobody knows what has happened to their inhabitants.

The amount of mud everywhere is terrifying. People don’t have clean water or food, access to toilets, many are still unable to come out of their homes due to mud and car piles blocking their streets. People have lost everything - their homes, cars, businesses and belongings.

Corpses are found all the time inside cars in garages, parking lots, floating away in the streams… It is gruesome. The conditions are unhygienic. The mayor of one town has said they have hundreds of cars at the bottom of the hill still buried in the mud, and none of their presumed occupants have been seen or heard of since the flood. This is a real tragedy. It is not being reported properly outside of Spain from what I can see.

The regional government is fighting with the national government over who needs to pull the trigger and involve bigger agencies and resources in the recovery of this area. I won’t go into the details, it’s shameful.

Help has come late and not in enough quantities - the Valencian people have walked over the bridge to the damaged side of the river for days now, with buckets, spades, brooms and cleaning supplies, and they are cleaning the streets. All the furniture inside damaged homes needs to be thrown away. People are collecting incredible amounts of food, water, sanitary and baby products, and the police is finally organising supply routes to most towns. It’s the citizens of the region who are doing the heavy lifting right now.

The Army apparently came in yesterday. Let’s hope they stay for longer than a week. Thousands of people are missing. We need proper machines to pump out water from garages and streets. Some villages are still to see the Emergency Military Unit (UME) who is meant to clear bodies, bring food and water and start repairs. Nobody is helping these people, roads are too damaged for cars to drive there, it’s too far to walk.

I have been unable to help physically this weekend due to caring responsibilities. Tomorrow morning I will be going in to sweep mud out of homes, and hope the infestation in the affected towns (from a lack of sewage and clean water systems) doesn’t make us all ill. But we can’t just stay at home.

I ask that you please pray for the Valencian region. We are due heavy rainfall again tonight. We can’t cope with even more water. If you are not religious, please send your good thoughts over to Spain. We are too busy and too traumatised to protest to the government right now. The response has been appalling, and it’s the community coming together and cleaning the streets by hand, one by one, that will end up rebuilding the area. Pray that aid reaches the cut-off towns. That people can call their loved ones and find out they are well. That this nightmare ends soon. Sorry for the very long post, but this needs to be known more widely.

Does anyone know how the clean up operation is going in Valencia? Do they still have lots of support?

Sending thoughts of hope and sympathy to everyone in Valencia Flowers

We were in València on Tuesday evening, sitting in a lovely restaurant when the alert went off, and the waiter translated it as nothing more than some heavy rain coming. Weds morning the city felt almost the same as the day before - the train apps even said our train might be running at midday. At the train station nothing was leaving, obviously, but there was still no sense of panic anywhere or any understanding of what was happening just miles away. I am so angry on everyone’s behalf how calm it seemed and how late that alert came.

We rented a car and ended up stuck outside Cheste all night in the town with no power or mobile signal, hundreds of people sleeping in their cars in car parks and on the roadside. We managed to finally find a back road that was still open and thank god made our flight that afternoon from another city. We were fortunate not to see anything awful or to be too caught up but it feels so awful now to know we were caught up in our woes in that rental car when so much else worse was happening.

I’m horrified that a first world country is reacting so slowly to this tragedy. Our thoughts are with all the wonderful, friendly and kind people we met on our trip to such a beautiful city.

It's dreadful what's happened!

What good would praying do?

It gives comfort to many people to know that others are praying for them. You might not find it helpful, but others do, and they have a right to their beliefs.

I don't practice any religion, but I am quite willing to go into a church and light a candle if it would help someone somewhere to know that I had done it.

How would they know you’d done it? Would the holt spirit nip over and tell them? Hopefully you didn’t pay for the candle, churches already have all the money…

’praying’ for things that can actually be helped with practical actions seem defunct, like all the people who ‘pray’ for the victims of school
shootings but do sod all to change guns laws.

I live in Euskadi and our weather is unseasonably lovely, it is very surreal reading about what is happening on the other side of the country. I was supposed to be there this bank holiday weekend but cancelled due to the weather with no idea it would end up as it has. Of course I am a little worried about the state our Valencia flat may be in but thankful that my only concerns are material damage, and that my Valencian friends and their families are all okay.

It is devastating and we seem to be becoming more and more desensitized to climate crises as they mount up.

@LastNight1Dreamt1WentToManderleyAgain I checked out the Caritas website last night but couldn't see anything about Valencia; if you do find one of the above we could donate to simply, such as via PayPal, please let us know. Thank you!

The Caritas Valencia website has a donations link...I don't know if we are allowed to paste links? www.caritasvalencia.org/emergencias/caritas-con-la-emergencia-en-valencia/

Now flood warning Barcelona- what's going on

Climate change. Such events are only going to become more common.

Mosalahiwoukd · 04/11/2024 12:32

What good would praying do? All Spaniards need to start demanding that their government send money and resources to the affected regions. Then serious, SERIOUSLY ask what they are going to do about climate change. This isn’t an act of ‘god’ - this man made and unfortunately entirely predictable.
It’s not under reported, it’s on every news channel in the U.K. - it’s horrendous.
I don’t blame the people throwing mud at the royals either.

MrsSkylerWhite · 04/11/2024 12:17

Can’t pray for you but fervently hoping that the situation does not become any worse.

Ginmonkeyagain · 04/11/2024 12:15

Two years of drought plus a shit ton of rain in a very short period of time = floods.

Bixterret · 04/11/2024 12:12

Now flood warning Barcelona- what's going on?

TennantsTwo · 04/11/2024 08:39

Thank you for the thread @PrayForValencia. The posters nit picking on the praying reference are ignorant and have not learned that there is usually a time and a place. Berating the OP for how she chose to phrase her post is unnecessary but then, anyone can post, so there is all sorts of unhelpful noise on MN.

The disaster in Valencia is deeply worrying and I agree that it hasn't been reported enough in the media. Today there is a tiny link about the Spanish King. Thousands are still missing and presumably won't have a happy ending. People in Valencia are living a nightmare now. It's also extremely disquieting that the temperatures in the UK are way too warm for November. It's going to be 16 degrees in London next week, in the middle of November. The rainfall in the last few years has increased and climate change is happening now all around us.

Ginmonkeyagain · 03/11/2024 18:27

We have a good number of Spanish colleagues and they are organising donations here to send to organisations on the ground in Valencia.

Please be assured OP is is being reported a lot here in the UK and we are all shocked and thinking of the Valencian people, many people in the UK have a deep affection for Spain. I have been to Valencia a good number of times, Mr Monkey has run the marathon there a number of times and loved it. It is such a beautiful place, it is shocking what has happened. We are heartbroken for you and thinking of you all.

Dr13Hadley · 03/11/2024 18:02

My sister in law is Valencian and lives with BIL in Murcia now but has today gone back home armed with supplies and donations to help with the rescue effort. She says the government support has been non existent and the King's visit hindered rather than helped because no rescuers were allowed anywhere near for security reasons. My heart goes out to you all.

elQuintoConyo · 03/11/2024 17:45

We're about 300km up the coast from you PrayForValencia and donated clothes, food (people & animals) and hygiene stuff yesterday, there were huge queues across plaças thought the town, so many collection points. Also friends in Madrid and Barcelona donating, also lines of people out the four, all waiting paty.
At 2pm we got an alert sent to all phones - made us all jump! Schools and unis are officially closed tomorrow.

We've been watching Valencia and it's surrounding towns and villages through our fingers, it's been truly horrifying.

My atheist prayers are with everyone.

dapsnotplimsolls · 03/11/2024 17:40

The lack of warnings and now the slow response have been shocking. I was heartened by the clips on the BBC site earlier - volunteers queuing for hours to help.

Cleebope2 · 03/11/2024 17:27

It’s not Daily Mail stuff. I watched it live. They were pelted with mud and verbally abused. I know they have little power and the anger is mostly at the politicians but the royals were also the targets of the people’s anger, whether justly or not. Many Spanish do not support the royal family so it is understandable. But good on them for turning up anyhow. It reminded me of the anger vented at the queen after the mudslide in Wales as shown in The Crown.

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 03/11/2024 17:15

It’s awful and it’s the sort of thing that needs to be addressed.

Climate change can hit anytime and anywhere.

It’s so disheartening to see that nothing is being done about this, at least nothing meaningful.

I will find out how I can donate.

LakieLady · 03/11/2024 17:14

Ilovegoldies · 03/11/2024 12:04

I am a lover of Spain and everything Spanish. I can pray but I'd like to make a donation. How do I know the best place to donate? I'm hoping you can suggest something. I'm not keen on donating to The Red Cross as I would prefer to send to a local charity.

I sent a donation via "Just Giving".

Spain flood relief appeal

It's truly awful, so many lives lost, infrastructure damaged and homes damaged and even destroyed. It will take months or even years to fix.

We had significant flooding in my town 20-ish years ago, but nothing on this scale. That was bad enough, the flooding in Valencia is horrific.

I have been watching rtve live on youtube ever since Wednesday. I used to be fluent in Spanish and spent many years visiting the beautiful Valencia region.I cannot believe the horror over there right now. The attacks on the royals and politicians visiting today was shocking but totally understandable. I pray that the death toll does not rise much further. It will take years to recover. How stupid that people were not warned to remain in a place of safety. This will happen again at some stage somewhere else if not there. It is terrifying how quickly the floodwater rises in Spain on hard ground. So different from UK
flooding.

My sister who lives in Spain said it was an attack on the politicians not the royals who don't have any power. Just typical Daily Mail stuff.

MissAmbrosia · 03/11/2024 17:01

I am horrified by what has happened. We were in Valencia a few weeks ago and loved the city and Albufera. My thoughts are with you and i will look to see where is best to make a donation. The clean up operation looks to be harrowing!
