My son's barber's tattoo

I took DS (9) to the barber's this afternoon. It's a shop we've used a few times before, now that he's pretty much aged out of the designated kiddy hairdresser, which is also a bit of a drive away, whereas this one is local and you can usually book in the day before. The shop is part of a chain. We've booked in with the two female barbers there previously but they were already booked up for today so I booked in with a guy. First time a man's cut my son's hair but he seemed perfectly lovely and took his time to do a really nice job on my son's hair.

So the problem I have is that the barber was wearing shorts showing a large tattoo of Andrew Tate on his lower leg. This had no impact on my son's experience at all, but made me feel uneasy that my son was in the company of a man who chooses to act as a human billboard for a misogynistic arsehole in his place of work, and worrying that this man can sport this tattoo so overtly with nobody batting an eyelid. And by paying for his services I am supporting him. I might be more sensitive to this today, as this morning I had a conversation with a colleague whose family member is in a coercive relationships with an Andrew Tate supporter and the details of this were really unpleasant.

I am not sure what my AIBU is. I won't book in with this barber again, but not sure if I should also avoid the whole shop due to their seeming acceptance of the casual misogyny. Is this just what barber shops are like or is this likely to be a one-off arsehole?

Also I feel confused. Surely any woman is going to run a mile from any man who supports Andrew Tate to the extent that he has him tattooed on his leg. Or as an Andrew Tate supporter is he so confident in his abilities to control and abuse women that he doesn't feel the badge of honour will hamper his efforts? I feel slightly regretful that I didn't ask him.

Anyone remember the “Gavin and Stacy” Xmas special where Ness tattooed Che Guevera on her customer (but with glasses) and Stacy said she loved Des Lynham?

Could be a case of a bad tattoo or he’s a prick so don’t go there.

Oh, and my DH and DS wear shorts all year round and we don’t have the heating on!

Funniest thread and replies, loving the potential other candidate suggestions 😂

What about women wearing short skirts in November?

Tarts, sluts and hookers

In winter it should be full skirts and thick stocking

Oh and tattoos on women are trampy

(I'm guessing)

TBH any grown man wearing shorts in November sounds like a bit of a knob to me.

Don't you find men who insist on wearing shorts in all weathers are the exhibitionist sort who want to be considered "characters"?

The addition of a tattoo, any tattoo, just makes it worse. But then maybe that is me showing my age.

I wouldn't go back there and if they have a website I would leave a review saying why.

Omg I hope you ran out of the shop screaming 'it is going to run through the razor and cling on to my child and influence him I need to rage'

SomeSuperhero · 02/11/2024 01:11

Are you sure it wasn’t a tattoo of a young Jimmy Savile? He liked cigars too.

TunipTheVegimal24 · 02/11/2024 00:51

If that barbers is particularly convenient for you, I'd still go, but make a point of booking someone other than him. You are perfectly reasonable not wanting to be near someone who's enough of a twat to have that tattoo.

If you can't book one of the other hairdressers, I'd go elsewhere.

Delphiniumandlupins · 02/11/2024 00:21

I'm not sure how I would tackle the conversation but I would want to let the business know why I wasn't coming back. Even if the tattoo was covered you don't want a man like that around your DS

MartinCrieffsLemon · 02/11/2024 00:13

But you could see it clearly enough to compare with a picture and be adamant it was Andrew Tate...

Yes, that's true. To be honest, posting on mumsnet wasn't on my mind at the time, otherwise I would have made the effort to find out how to disable the click and get a cheeky shot.

I would have said something. I couldn't help myself. How embarrassing for him.

I would have needed to crouch down to get a decent shot and I don't know how to turn off the load click the phone makes when I take a photo, so no I am afraid I didn't.

Ah yes. All Posties are knobhead exhibitionists

TheDowagerCountessofPembroke · 02/11/2024 00:11

I would just go somewhere else

OnSecondThoughts · 02/11/2024 00:08

Wearing shorts just to show off your Andrew Tate tattoo is even worse.

Maddy70 · 02/11/2024 00:08

I wpuld ask for the ma.ager and e omain why you wont be returning. Exolain that he dis a giid job and you are pleased with his service but that tattoo is something that the salon should consider and suggest it is covered in order that most customers dont align with his views

But surely you snapped a cheeky wee photo with that 'phone in front of your face'?

Standing room only?
Sounds like either the best barbers in town or the only one. Which means you have no choice really

Don’t know about you but there’s at least 2-3 barbers to choose from in every town round by us, just go somewhere else?

Other barbers, you say. Thanks. I might look into that.

OP posts:
sunshineandskyscrapers · 01/11/2024 23:55

Standing room only unfortunately, but yes with my phone in front of my face for comparison. A ban might work out quite well. Then I won't need to spend any longer contemplating whether to go back.

BestZebbie · 01/11/2024 23:53

What a peculiar tattoo to get considering that Tate supposedly required the women he trafficked to get tattoos to show they were 'owned by Tate' as well.

MartinCrieffsLemon · 01/11/2024 23:51

So you sat there for half an hour scrutinising the barber's leg?

You're probably banned from there now anyways
