MIL only one not to say my baby looks like me

My MIL never says my baby looks like me. Everyone else - friends, family, strangers, says he’s the spit of me but I noticed she stays quiet and only comments that he looks like her son / my DH and at a push, that he looks like both of us. It’s starting to annoy me, and wonder whether it’s a slight at me, am I being silly? DH isn’t insecure at all that people say he looks more like me and joins in.

My dad told me that my daughter looks like William Haig, and everyone else tells me how much she looks like her dad (who is most definitely not William Haig) 😂. I wasn’t offended or upset by it because all babies look like potato’s for the first while. Let her and your husband have this one. It’s likely she is just trying to connect with the newest member of her family.

StarSlinger · 01/11/2024 23:55

I was never so insecure that everyone should say babies looked like me. None of them did.

Scout2016 · 01/11/2024 23:53

I thought all babies looked like their dads? An evolutionary throwback thing so they know the child is theirs and it triggers instincts to look after them. Meanwhile no one could doubt who mum is. I can't produce any research papers to back me up mind.
I'd say until 4 or 5 my DD mainly looked like her dad, with echoes of my younger sister when she was little. But I would spot them, because I remember my sister little and obviously wasn't looking at myself all day to recall me as a child.
As others have said, your MIL knows what her son looked like as a baby compared to your child.

Just ignore her. I had the same. The baby came out of you - she can never compete so just ignore her. Or if you want some fun, keep on commenting how everyone says you and the baby look alike.

Why?

user2848502016 · 01/11/2024 23:49

You're being silly. Maybe your baby does look more like you but he will look like your DH too and your MIL remembers what DH was like as a baby better than anyone- maybe to her he just really does look like DH?

PrinnyPree · 01/11/2024 23:48

As gently as possible YABU, she sees her DC, who she knew as a baby, in her DGC. She didn't see you as a baby so she doesn't see you in the baby as strongly. Please don't take it personally. If you have DGC in the future you will probably look at them and see your own DC as a baby in them too. Xx

andfinallyhereweare · 01/11/2024 23:47

I’d reply when anyone says any of my kids looks like so and so “they look like themselves” it really doesn’t matter, you know he’s your child. Doesn’t matter.

RedRosesPinkLilies · 01/11/2024 23:45

That is MIL for you. Just ignore and learn to laugh at it

Brananan · 01/11/2024 23:43

Maybe she's deliberately trying to be horrible to you. Is that what you want people to say?

CasuirDubh · 01/11/2024 23:42

None of my husband's family say my baby looks like me even though she's the spitting image of me and everyone else says it. We figure they're trying to be nice to my husband.

It doesn't bother me. I think it's kind of sweet that they try to spare his feelings at having a baby that looks absolutely nothing like him. The child was conceived via IVF so I'm in the clear 😅

EliflurtleAndTheInfiniteMadness · 01/11/2024 23:38

It may well be that she wants to see a connection to her in the baby. She loves her grandchild, she's reminiscing about her own children, there's nice reasons behind why she might be saying this.

Knittedfairies2 · 01/11/2024 23:35

When my children were born I thought they were the most beautiful babies imaginable, but looking at photos of them many years later, they looked like any other babies...

Yeah I understand this, my son is blonde (at the moment anyway, I know hair usually darkens) and my mil, who is generally lovely, says I wonder where the blonde came from? Must be someone further back in the family. She said this to me, a natural blonde, with blonde grandparents. I just thought did she forget I had involvement with this child? But put it down to her looking for her own connection with him or something?

But she is correct because blonde is a recessive trait (broadly, don't come at me geneticists), so for your child to be blonde they need to inherit that trait from your husband too.

In the unlikely event that this is real, don't be a dick. Babies all just basically look like babies.

Timetoread · 01/11/2024 23:30

I think it is very subjective and in most cases children have features of both parents. One of my kids I only see resemblance to their sibling but not the parents and different people say they look like one parent or the other, the funniest are a couple of relatives claiming they look like them!

Drama over nothing
Never got this childish obsession about sulking when someone says the baby looks like their father. Isn’t that a compliment? You obviously thought his father was attractive enough to sleep with him?

Seriously, as if there was only one involved. Some genes are stronger. I have a friend whose kid (now primary age) looks like a mini version of her husband, and not her but she’s not so insecure to think that’s not funny.

EliflurtleAndTheInfiniteMadness · 01/11/2024 23:27

We have three kids ILs thought they all looked like my XH as babies. They are themselves, they don't need to resemble me or their dad or any other relative for that matter. Why is it such a big deal to you that your MIL says they look like you? Its a lot of drama over something that means nothing at all.

Catsbreakfast · 01/11/2024 23:27

Truth is, young babies look like babies and very rarely like anyone. People say this to be polite unless there’s strong familiar features but they tend to come out later. Your mil probably doesn’t mean anything by it, she just tries to build ties with her newest family member. I wouldn’t be mad.

TheMotherSide · 01/11/2024 23:25

Eh? This was literally never a topic of conversation when mine were babies. There really must be a strong resemblance for all those people to comment on how much DBaby looks like you. In which case, is it really necessary for MiL to chime in to reiterate what you already know?

Switcher · 01/11/2024 23:24

SensibleSigma · 01/11/2024 22:49

Can you not let the woman enjoy her grandchild- her little boy’s little boy- without getting offended? This one isn’t about you, it’s about her connection to the baby. You want that. You want to cherish it. That connection makes people move heaven and earth to protect the baby. It’s a survival trait.

100% this

Different people see different things in children, mannerisms etc, them at remind them of their loved ones. I used to laugh that my mum would say how my children were so obviously from our side of the family with their looks and then we would see MiL and she would say the same thing about her side of the family!!
