Those who believe MN is more leftists, what makes you think so?

ItTook8WibesToKnow7WasEnough · 31/10/2024 16:08

Because to me MN has always come off much more right / conservative.

So, if you can point out what makes it so leftist.

The right/left spectrum is a modern understanding from the French revolution. Christianity is an ethical construct that's 2000 years old

And both require regular updating.

Centrist in the UK is right in European terms so it depends how you look at it.

The centre is surely a myth, what is centrism?

MissTrip82 · 01/11/2024 08:59

Pro choice isn’t exclusively left wing; pro forced birth is exclusively right wing I’ll agree.

Christianity isn’t right wing. If you think it is, it’s a while since you’ve read the New Testament.

It's very much centrist. Centrist is only left wing if the Overton window has shifted further right.

Centre is centre.

At the 2019 election time, the numbers on here who were voting for Corbyn’s labour were huge / had very loud voices.

I didn’t vote as I thought the options were both exceptionally poor.

Gwenhwyfar · 01/11/2024 08:59

Not at all actually. I've seen more pro-Christian messages and very few anti-Christian ones.

Not that it is a left v right issue in the UK anyway. You're using American categorisations.

I think it depends on how you define left wing. I think it's pretty centrist with a good dollop of authoritarianism.

Looking at the voting intention polls that are posted before elections, versus the election results, Mumsnet is slightly more to the left than the general population, but not remarkably so.

Women, as a percentage, are more likely to vote left than men.

Is there much left wing about Starmer's Labour?

The actual left wing hate them.

Edited

Just look at the long running threads in Chat - Starmer no x threads! They won’t hear a word against Labour, nor a word pro Conservatives.

This makes sense.

Plenty of rich people here, but also as they're mainly women they see the value of funding public services for education, health and childcare.

User135644 · 01/11/2024 08:54

Overton window has shifted to the right in general. The right tend to view anything liberal as left wing as well and MN can still be liberal on some things.

I believe life begins at birth, not at conception. I defend every woman's right to decide whether a pregnancy continues to term. Much more controversially, I think there should be less interventions to deliver pre-term and marginal health babies... because we are now so good at it that we are handing our communities a lifelong and very costly responsibility to fund 40 or 50 years of life at unlimited public expense. I am sorry because that sounds cold.

That's OK, we will be liquidating non productive adultstock before we know it too.

Yelloworangetomato · 01/11/2024 08:48

LoveSandbanks · 31/10/2024 21:35

That’s if you believe that life begins at conception. And if that’s the case then anti abortionists should hold equally strong views on ivf and surrogacy but it’s just abortions they shout about.

feed the poor and leave women to be responsible for their own bodies.

Nobody likes the idea of abortion but it’s been going on for thousands of years. It’s legalised to allow women access to safe abortions because without that there would be more deaths. Women will still access abortions but they’ll be unregulated and unsafe and women will die

That view does extend to IVF and surrogacy. They're wrong.

Prostitution is as old as time also. Doesn't mean we should celebrate and encourage it.

In other words, pro-women.
On a site of mums, shocking.

kiraric · 01/11/2024 06:20

The other thing that seems quite right wing to me on here are the often quite fawning posts about the royals.

saltinesandcoffeecups · 31/10/2024 23:57

I’m American so you’re all lefty to me 🤣.

As an outsider though… I think it’s fairly even…but does lean a little left.

I think it’s a mixture of conformation bias and self selection of posters.

PickAChew · 31/10/2024 23:47

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 31/10/2024 18:26

Just look at the long running threads in Chat - Starmer no x threads! They won’t hear a word against Labour, nor a word pro Conservatives.

Those threads are merely named after the current prime minister and have had the same core posters through many changes of PM in recent years.

HangingOutInRaccoonCity · 31/10/2024 23:43

I'm very central in my views and agree with some left and right ideologies.
The left definitely seems more emotional and vernally aggressive against any right views.
The far right are aggressive but generally, the right leaning people seem to be more matter of fact and don't resort to name calling.
The aggression they get puts them off from posting their views.
But, I feel that society is quietly moving towards the right more.

RampantIvy · 31/10/2024 23:27

Doesn't it depend on the type of threads you click on? I read a lot of education threads, and I don't get the impression that many of the posters are left wing at all.

I think that's a pretty awful thing to write on a site where many parents will have children with disabilities (whether through premature birth, birth injuries or other causes). Their children are not burdens on the state, it is right that the state values their lives.

(Which, yes,I agree begin at birth not conception.)

Completely deluded. As evidenced by the photos of their decidedly average looking cats which they think are cute and funny.

maddening · 31/10/2024 22:12

I am pretty centrist with left leanings - but I do see both sides on here and I think the left side comes across more aggressively so with lots of hyperbole and purity spirals - so it isn't about talking points - it is the lack of talking points, refusing to debate and a casting of people disagreeing as evil and far right.
