It's 3pm and already we've had people trick n treating. I've now brought pumpkins inside until 5ish. Anyone else?

I'm another one who hates Halloween. It's such a weird imported custom - kids dressing up as ghouls and monsters and knock on strangers' doors at night asking for sweets. I don't get it.
I don't have any decorations up but have had a few bangs on the door. I find it quite threatening. Might put ear plugs in!

It's not imported it's celtic.

I only went trick or treating a few times when I was a child. But now that I think about it, why is trick or treating even a thing? Who thought of it and what’s the point? I’ve always thought you can just go and get whatever sweets you want at the shop. Too much sugar is bad for kids. I’m not some kind of grinch, but it’s sad that Halloween traditions have been lost and it’s all been turned into a meaningless thing for children.

Feels pretty traditional to me, as others have said ‘guising’ goes back to the 16th century. There was also ‘souling’ in medieval England, when poor people would go door to door on November 1, receiving food and soul cakes in return for prayers for the dead.

But more recently, I’m 45 and went trick or treating as a child and don’t get the impression it was a new thing even then? I had a carved swede rather than a pumpkin though.

Anyway; we’ve had a fabulous time with my 4 year old - only going to decorated houses of which there are absolutely loads round here and everyone seemed happy and having fun with this tradition, however/ wherever it came from.

Awww, look at you being all edgy and try hard being a dick about kids. Who have you come dressed as this year, Katie Hopkins?

If there's a pumpkin outside it's a go where we live! 🎃

This surely

😂😂😂 noone has commented on my Skeleton costume yet!

I keep freaking them out by knocking on the door before I open it. Have had a few shrieks!

That’s an absolutely brilliant idea! I am going to shamelessly steal it!

I'm disabled and one of my main symptoms is severe chronic pain, so I've made treat bags (stickers, a ruler, a pencil, an ink stamp, an eraser and a large rainbow lolly in each bag) and at about 3pm, I hung them outside on my fence and on the curls of our wrought iron gate - this way, the kids get their fun but I don't have to keep getting up and aggravating my illness and the pain.
Had a couple of children before 4pm - but most will come around now until 8ish.

That's so sweet of you! How thoughtful. 💖

Sorry, genuinely can't parse that sentence.

Trick or treating has been around for centuries under one name or another.

5.30 start here, and we’ve had about 50 or 55 and run out of sweets, bubble wands and satsumas with faces drawn on them.

Care to elaborate? Because if you're a genuine poster I don't think you would speak about other cultures in that way.

AlmostCutMyHairToday · 31/10/2024 19:20

We've been having a great time! Though there was an elderly man stalking around the streets shouting "Be gone you pagans and devil worshippers! Shame on you celebrating Satan's way. Praise be to Jesus!"
Scariest thing we've seen all evening lol

Trick or treating is a Halloween tradition though. ‘Guising’ was recorded in Scotland in the 16th century. Wiki it!!

Yorkshire too.

Are you so disrespectful to the traditions of other cultures?

NoisyDenimShaker · 31/10/2024 19:13

Parry5timesbeforedeath · 31/10/2024 17:13

I am so annoyed. We finally had our first one and DS1 was downstairs when they knocked and opened it up and threw handfuls of sweets at them them shut the door,

I was in the loo and flipping missed it.

Jesus. Just don't answer. No need to throw things at them.

You’re doing it all wrong.
Stop handing out tenners and get to Tesco for cheap sweets instead?
