It's 3pm and already we've had people trick n treating. I've now brought pumpkins inside until 5ish. Anyone else?

My house is behind a big hedge (because it cost a fortune last time I got someone to cut it!), and between that and being the only house in my road with a pumpkin out, and being at the end of a dead end, I think the trick or treaters don’t bother walking down far enough to see my pumpkin and so I’ve had no callers :( I was looking forward to seeing the costumes as my Dd went with her father this year, I’m missing out and don’t like it!

Next year you'll have to put your pumpkin in or on your hedge, with an electric candle inside so no fire hazard!

Getonwitit · 31/10/2024 19:56

Just give the weans a sweetie.

girlofsandwich · 31/10/2024 19:55

Can't get worked up about it, it's one day a year! I remember sitting on my stairs some years because I would have barely sat on the couch and be up to the door again.

Of course no issue in people bunkering down for the night and not answering the door! And when the sweets run out that's it, lights off curtains closed.

I live in a flat now so no trick or treaters, just a cat with airplane ears and saucer eyes having a meltdown over the fireworks 😭 So he's getting all the treats this year.

GivingitToGod · 31/10/2024 19:53

Happy Halloween!
Chill

Pootle40 · 31/10/2024 19:45

Jeez I wouldn't answer my door until 6pm!

Had door going non stop between 5pm - 6 30pm, was worried about to run out, ran to the shop to stock up and only had one knock since. Really polite kids with great outfits. My favourite was a girl who was about 10 as Anne boleyn with a dolls head to match under her arm! Did see a few smaller kids get a bit overwhelmed and meltdowns starting. But I'll be better prepared for next year now!

That is cool. Someone had a guillotine in the garden and it was moving.

Fireworks going off in our neck of the woods. Not as many guisers this year so sweeties and chocolate for dinner tonight 🤭

That would be for diwali celebrations

I did 40 years ago my DM did it 65 years ago ( London and Cardiff respectively if it matters) then as now a lit pumkin or other decoration = fair game. No pumpkin = don't knock. It isn't difficult or complicated and as far as I am aware the rules have been the same for 50 years.

and actually it's lovely, marking of the seasons for me as much as a nativity service at christmas or maypole dancing all things which were part of DMs childhood in the '50s, my childhood in the '80s and my DC's in the 2010's. Also these children are those severly affected by the pandemic, some of those 9,10,11 yo olds could go at 6,7,8 because we were all locked up. They need to have postive interactions with people- they are noticably shyer and less sure of themselves than those who went before.

Gonegirl7 · 31/10/2024 19:44

its unwritten around my London suburb town that it’s basically 5-7pm and then hard finish. Only go to houses with decorations. Don’t knock any other houses. Ta dah!!

We started at 5. It's an after dark thing usually. The kids had an absolute ball and have a mountain of sweets. Still a few left in the tub on our step when we got back and are still having the odd straggler knocking now.

That’s an absolutely brilliant idea! I am going to shamelessly steal it!

You can have it with my spooky blessings!!

wonkylegs · 31/10/2024 18:18

We have a display of lit carved pumpkins out but apparently our house is too spooky
We have a big classic victorian House down longish driveway lined with trees, it is lit but only subtly , I just glimpsed a group of about 15, 10-12yo in costume get half way down the drive and then run back to the pavement shrieking 🤣🤣

Haha, that's funny!

That’s what I meant in my post. Piss off to where you live. When did this shit become a thing?? I didn’t knock on strangers doors begging when I was a kid

IVFmumoftwo · 31/10/2024 19:36

I see a lot about Ireland but I would presume the entirety of what is Britain as well would have celebrated this in the Celtic age. It isn't a new thing.

doodleschnoodle · 31/10/2024 19:34

We had lots of kids, all pretty polite and most of them had a joke or some other 'turn' (in Scotland where this is expected!). DDs got a good haul visiting decorated houses and telling their jokes.

We've run out of sweets now so took decorations in and turned lights off and no further knocks.

NoisyDenimShaker · 31/10/2024 19:34

purplebeansprouts · 31/10/2024 18:16

Is that it??

@purplebeansprouts I'm up to 37 so far!

purplebeansprouts · 31/10/2024 19:34

purplebeansprouts · 31/10/2024 19:34

Oh!!!! There's an idea. Next year I'm doing satsumas with faces on. No one will nick them

I'd need lots though

purplebeansprouts · 31/10/2024 19:34

Marcipex · 31/10/2024 19:20

5.30 start here, and we’ve had about 50 or 55 and run out of sweets, bubble wands and satsumas with faces drawn on them.

Oh!!!! There's an idea. Next year I'm doing satsumas with faces on. No one will nick them

NippyCrab · 31/10/2024 19:34

Funkyslippers · 31/10/2024 19:05

There is no harm in knocking on strangers' doors if the house is decorated. What do you think is going to happen? And please don't say anything about how kids should be wary of strangers

Yes if the house is decorated absolutely. I wasn't going to say anything of the sort but you never truly know who lives next door... 😂

Hazeby · 31/10/2024 19:33

I had a carved swede rather than a pumpkin though

Bloody Nora, that must have been hard going. Did you need a hammer and chisel?!

TroysMammy · 31/10/2024 19:31

As soon as I put the outside light on I had 3 young teens ring the doorbell. They weren't dressed up and I asked where were their costumes. One said "we can do a trick". I told them no and to come back when they had put their Halloween costumes on. I did point behind them and say "what's that?" as they all turned to look at my cctv. Can't be too careful.

I wouldn't try that in my corner of the UK if I were you...
