Boyfriend has just unveiled an awful mustache?

My boyfriend has a nice short beard with I suppose a mustache included but you don't really notice it.

He asked me a while ago how I'd feel about a mustache and I said I wouldn't be crazy about it and wouldn't really find it attractive.

Well today he told me he had a surprise for me for November. He's just sent me a photo - he's shaved off his beard and fashioned this god awful mustache. I dont like it and it immediately gives me the ick.

He's clearly looking for a compliment but I bloody hate it. AIBU?

@Westofeasttoday personalities are one thing.
Tache's are.....a totally different league 😂

@Icedbear he actually asked me to grow my hair a bit longer recently and I decided I would skip my next appointment just to indulge him until Christmas.

I don't think I'll bother now!

I told him how unattractive it was last month. I even told him I declined a date with another guy online before we met because I couldn't get past the mustache. And now he gets one?

You guys love each other for your personalities right? Just thought I would check……

Celia24 · 30/10/2024 18:02

The thing is he hasn't SAID what it's for.

I feel like he's trialling it with me to keep it

I loathe it

"Oh darling, is that for Mo-vember? How funny that Mo-vember coincides with No-sex-vember!"

AdviceNeeded2024 · 30/10/2024 19:26

He wants to keep the ‘tache legacy going… I know where you are coming from I love a well groomed beard or stubble but I don’t think most men (not all, some can) can carry a moustache off… especially not a big thick one!

Have you told him you would prefer him to grow his stubble back by the end of November?

Celia24 · 30/10/2024 19:25

@Nosleepforthismum I'm actually in love with Aidan Turner but that's beside the point.

A friend just recommended Rivals to me, so I should find out!

Celia24 · 30/10/2024 19:25

@OriginalUsername2 yes I've asked him if he's doing it for Movember.

Now I wait...

Nosleepforthismum · 30/10/2024 19:24

Maybe watch Aidan Turner in Rivals and see if you can get on board with it first. I’ve re-evaluated my position on terrible moustaches after watching 😅

OriginalUsername2 · 30/10/2024 19:24

Maybe he’s just winding you up and is aware of how ridiculous he looks?

Did you reply yet?

Celia24 · 30/10/2024 19:21

@AdviceNeeded2024 his uncle had a similar mustache before he died. I feel like he's doing it in tribute or something. If he actually is for a month I can cope.

Beyond that...no.

OP posts:
Needmorelego · 30/10/2024 19:20

@Celia24 could you accidentally set fire to it?
Or spill a bottle of Veet on it while he is sleeping?

AdviceNeeded2024 · 30/10/2024 19:19

Celia24 · 30/10/2024 19:18

@AdviceNeeded2024 it's a cross between the Walrus and the Horseshoe.

Truly awful.

😳 Oh No!!! The worst two 🫣

I’d be turned off by it as well to be fair, very ‘I’ve come to fix the fridge’ 70’s porno.

@Celia24

calm down love. He's probably just doing Movember & using it to wind you up. A bit immature, but hey ho.

Don't over think it. Play along with it for 4 weeks. If it's still there on Sunday the 1st of December, tell him it's gone by Monday morning or he is. (If you haven't grown to love it!!)

a million years ago when it was a new thing, I was living overseas from my Dad & mid Nov he video called (dial up on laptop!!) me with this proper big fat moustache, I was shocked he had been 'monks hair' for years by then I was shocked & thought it looked dreadful!! After about an hour he told me about Movember & his intention to get rid on 1st Dec. I think if he hadn't my Mum would have done it for him.

i don't think it's shallow. Looks come into it for most people. Very rare not to care about how physically attractive your partner is to YOU.

I don't like thin men, I do like a nice 6 pack & am also attracted to a Dad Bod. I don't mind a man bun on the right man, but if my 60yo bloke suddenly decided to grow his hair he'd be told instantly to stop being so daft. Likewise if I started dying my hair like a 🦜 I'd expect him to say the same. 🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️

I get the view that it's your body/ hair you can do what you want with it, but you can't make your partner stick around if they hate it.

AdviceNeeded2024 · 30/10/2024 19:16

Which style is it like OP… I’m guessing the Chevron?

Peachy2005 · 30/10/2024 19:11

As someone suggested, say “see you in December”

DeepRoseFish · 30/10/2024 19:05

Don’t go anywhere near him and when he tries to kiss/sleep with you say no thanks it’s a huge turn off for me!

Celia24 · 30/10/2024 19:03

Years ago I had an ex shave everything off and it was weird and not so attractive. But I coped.

The pornographic mustache is different.

OP posts:
Celia24 · 30/10/2024 19:00

@BeatsAntique yep, he looks totally different.

OP posts:
buttonsB4 · 30/10/2024 19:00

Just say "I told you last month I find men with moustaches unattractive, so I'm the wrong person to ask if you're hoping for a compliment, I can only assume you're trying to give me the ick!"

BeatsAntique · 30/10/2024 18:59

I couldn’t get past my ex shaving his beard off. He looked like an entirely different person and about 12. Immediate ick.

Havalona · 30/10/2024 18:59

I'll be called homophobic, I know it, but moustaches are very YMCA like to me.

Vitriolinsanity · 30/10/2024 18:59

OriginalUsername2 · 30/10/2024 18:14

He’s a Movember Dickhead.

It’s not for charity, it’s for attention.

Hmm

DS17 has not shaved all half term to get an edge on Movember at school.

He has already raised £100 (family holiday last weekend), whilst teased mercilessly by his male relatives.

He says his prostate will last the longest.

Celia24 · 30/10/2024 18:58

It's more the fact I told him I hate them and used the words 'I am not attracted' and then he got one.

I find that strange.

OP posts:
moonshinepoursthroughmywindow · 30/10/2024 18:54

Is it shallow for this to be a deal breaker?

I wouldn't say it it indicates that you are shallow, but it is possibly an indication that your love for him is relatively shallow. You described him as a boyfriend, so I'm guessing the relationship is not at a stage where splitting up would be a massive administrative hassle. If you honestly aren't sure you still want to be with him with a moustache, then he might not be the one for you.

Duckyfondant · 30/10/2024 18:54

It's tricky, isn't it? My long term partner currently has a straggly orange moustache that dangles over his lips. He knows I don't like it. He offers to shave it. But I would feel awful asking that of him.

I think it's one thing to make it clear how unattractive you find a certain look and quite another expressing an expectation that they change their appearance for you.
