Expected to start teams meetings?

I’ve started a new job and my diary for now is very empty with few meetings and there’s quite a lot of training material that I have to go through.

My manager is always in back to back meetings and he’s put two 30 minute catchups in with me for the first month. From experience meetings tend to overrun so I’ve waited for him to be ready for our call and then I’ll hop on as I’m just reading - or he might need a loo break or get a drink.

Today it got to 5 past our meeting and he messaged me to say “are you joining”. So I started the call and he said that I am expected to always start the meetings.

Obviously once I’m more busy I won’t even give it a second thought as to who starts a meeting, but this seems such a weird rule to me.

I’d just join at the start time and wait for other people to turn up.

I’ve never heard about the junior person starting the meeting but I can see how that might pander to some egos. Poor sods if that’s what passes for power!

It’s not ego pandering. It’s recognition that the senior person is the most likely to be justifiably late as they are waylaid every 5 minutes with issues above your pay grade, and the meeting should be ready to go when they get there. It’s never ever bothered me starting a meeting and waiting for them, you just put on mute and keep working, or have desultory chat with the others on the call.

BitOutOfPractice · 31/10/2024 11:08

I just join at the start time and wait for others to join. I think you’re both being weird waiting on each other. Just join at the right time.

Bellyblueboy · 31/10/2024 11:05

I think this thread epitomizes the difficulties in managing people. Some people just don’t like being told what to do. They don’t see why someone else gets ‘power’ over them just because of a job title.

so they rebel against it. This lady doesn’t see any difference between her and her boss. What should she do as he asks unless she agrees with his logic. Why should she wait for him - she is already annoyed about having to read training documents. So she is doing that - he can dance to her tune!

I suspect this lady will fight against every line manager she has - rebel against every company rule. She will be branded as difficult and people won’t want to work with her. But she will always believe she is right.

GRex · 31/10/2024 08:56

This is amazing. I've never heard before of someone only waiting for others to join before they will join a meeting. Hope there aren't too many external calls!!

OP - Your manager has asked you to turn up on time for meetings, and has clarified that you can do that by opening the meeting invitation at the correct time. You don't need to waste energy with all this angst about junior, power play, fretting about what your manager is doing each minute etc; you're paid to be at your job and one of the ways in which you can you demonstrate that you're doing your job is by turning up to meetings on time.

maddening · 31/10/2024 06:39

surrpundedby · 29/10/2024 14:50

I’m not sat there twiddling my thumbs. I’m doing the training materials - which is a lot. More than any other company I’ve worked for.

And sometimes you can’t help turning up late to a teams meeting. You’re seriously telling me you’ve never once been in a meeting that’s overrun by 2 or 3 minutes?

You’ve used a lot of exclamation marks … you seemed very horrified by this … that’s quite worrying. Also you can’t be that busy at your job scrolling on Mumsnet at 3pm.

But you are not in meetings that.over run?

I think you're misunderstanding OP (and me). Her manager wants her to be the one that actually switches the meeting on, as it were.

Yes, because every time they have a teams meeting, she is late to it (for no reason other than she's gormlessly waiting for him to start it).

The norm is to start the meeting at the appointed time and wait until everyone joins. It's not taking her away from anything to be on teams on time.

I think it's become a matter of hierarchy because she's repeatedly not ready when expected.

It’s already been made clear throughout the the thread why. What aren’t you understanding?

So. That’s not really different to what the poster wrote so what are we misunderstanding?

It shouldn't really have come up as something that needed communicating.

If you've got a teams meeting with your line manager, you start it on time unless told they can't make it.

Couldn’t agree more. I despair at times this need to constantly question just because you don’t want to do something or heaven forbid do something that seems inferior.

As a general point millennials seem to believe that constant questioning makes them confident and strong BUT they question the wrong things. I love a good challenge on an idea or decision but not on a minor process.

I see it constantly this misguided belief that questioning authority makes a person confident.

Where was the thinking about trying to impress, being proactive, doing the right thing etc. instead the focus and point is on how the manager didn’t behave the way she wanted.

I report to the Board of a large multinational company and guess what if they want something I do it. I am also described as confident, smart and strong. I don’t say this to brag at all but rather show that acting like this isn’t acceptable.

Odd perspective, the young always did question everything both the "right" and the "wrong" things, it's how times change though the decades. Are you gen X by any chance?

As posters have said, millennials are not the newbies in the work place, I've 25 years experience in my field and I'm a millennial. Even older "gen z" will be approaching 30 in the next few years. I never quite get the need to see age so to speak in the work place, younger or older, everyone has strengths/weaknesses.

Westofeasttoday · 30/10/2024 13:37

Okay as I have said three times now I made that point generally and while your point is fair I would reword with new into the workplace.

i have a genius IQ and considered to be very smart, emotionally intelligent and a leader in the business so not dim at all but thanks for the feedback.

so if your now saying your (still ridiculous over generalisation with no evidence whatsoever) comment was actually aimed towards people who are 'new to the workplace' then you shouldn't have even used millennial in the first place, as the absolute youngest millennials are 28, and thus fairly unlikely to be starting their first jobs at that age....

MeowCatPleaseMeowBack · 30/10/2024 12:46

These posts are utterly ridiculous. There are 15 MILLION millennials in the UK, but here we have one OP with an attitude problem and some people decide all 15 million are the same. I'm not sure how you came to be on a board with that kind of dim thinking.

In addition to the fact that there is literally no evidence to confirm how old the OP is....

user2848502016 · 30/10/2024 19:09

In my work it's join at the start of the meeting, doesn't really matter who gets there first!
I wouldn't just sit there and not join a meeting, if the other person/people are running late I would expect them to message they'll be there in 5 or whatever

Jellycatspyjamas · 30/10/2024 18:50

In my workplace whoever is ready at the allotted time starts the meeting and if the other is running late they'd send a message in chat to let the person waiting know - I'll then message to say I'm getting a cup of tea while I'm waiting. My boss often sees the meeting start and is prompted to join because her head has been in something else. I'd never just sit waiting for her to start the meeting.

Flyhigher · 30/10/2024 18:45

I really don't think it s power move.
He's just busy and thinking between calls.

He'd like you to start it as a prompt.

Help your boss out. If you want to get good projects and support.

When you are a manager you will see how it works.

Until then help him out.

Flyhigher · 30/10/2024 18:38

Icedbear · 29/10/2024 15:33

I generally find work life runs better when you look to help your boss rather than be put out at every little thing.....

Fabulous

decorativecushions · 29/10/2024 15:26

You sound like a 'difficult to manage ' type.

Are you always this pedantic and nit picky?

This. I would already have your card marked. If I was your manager.

You need to recover this situation fast.

You have probation to pass presumably?

Flyhigher · 30/10/2024 18:29

Start the meeting.
They will be exhausted with back to back meetings all day.
Don't try and justify your position.
It's your boss. Do you want to annoy them.
You've just started this role.

They have asked you to start it. So start it.

Slagging off people because of their date of birth does not scream high IQ.

This thread needs to go into classics I think!

VapeVamp12 · 30/10/2024 16:08

I hadn’t read the entire thread when I replied a minute ago.

I don’t understand how this is even a thing?

so neither of you joined? How did he know you weren’t there if he hadn’t joined?

i thought it was whoever did the invite is the one who has to “start” it? But you join on time regardless and it will have a different message depending on if others have joined yet….

very unusual mind sight to not even join; even if you think boss will likely be late. You can use your computer as normal until they arrive.

reading work posts on MN makes me feel very lucky sometimes. My work is apparently very laid back and flexible.

VapeVamp12 · 30/10/2024 15:53

The meeting can’t “start” on teams until more than one person is on

so he would have had a “as soon as the meeting starts ….” Message on his screen

I don’t think it’s about what position starts a meeting - join at the right time and if he’s, he’s late. You can still something else whilst you wait

Gwenhwyfar · 30/10/2024 15:47

TarantinoIsAMisogynist · 29/10/2024 16:06

Because he is having his time wasted by the OP.

He dials in as soon as he can (which may be slightly late, but the reason is because his last call overran), while the person he is meeting with doesn't bother - despite the fact that she doesn't have any good reason for dialling in late.

No, apparently he wasn't in an overlapping meeting, he just wants her to be first on principle.

Indeed! I'm bemused at my mild joke of a comment was deleted. Perhaps the pp and the mods didn't recognise the reference.

There was nothing deletable about your comment!

jeaux90 · 30/10/2024 14:55

OP its not a weird rule.
I run my team exactly the same.

They are all really busy and so am I. As you say in your OP he is in back to back so may take a few mins to grab a drink or bathroom break.

I also know my team are busy, it's essentially their meeting to catch up with me, so as soon as I seen them join I will know they are ready and jump on too.

They might be in back to backs and overrun too so it's a time saver for everyone. They are on, I see the notification so I join.

You are reading way too much into this and the "power play" thing cracked me up, it's like something out of a 90s movie.
